It feels incredible to be back here on TH-cam posting a new arrangement after all this time! I've already said a lot in my comeback announcement video, so I'll keep this description section just about this particular arrangement, haha!
DK Island Swing is a song that I've wanted to arrange for so long, but always felt too intimidated to take on the challenge! I did reference it in my 3-part Jazz Video Game Medley series, but I've never arranged it as a standalone piece. With the title of the song and the iconic drumbeat intro, this song obviously references the famous jazz tune "Sing, Sing, Sing". Hearing this, I thought to myself "well, what if DK Island Swing was actually recorded by a big band?" I wanted to take on that challenge for a while, but there were a couple of problems: One, I didn't have the brass instruments in my arsenal that I would have wanted to use to perform this with the ensemble I wanted to and Two, the song is a bit short!
Since I'm originally a saxophone player, learning to play brass has certainly been a challenge for me. I started dabbling in trumpet in 2019 (I think?) and honestly it took me quite a while to start sounding halfway decent on the instrument. Fast forward a couple of years, and now I think my trumpet playing is sounding decent! I've also been working on trombone to round out the big band brass section, and ALSO a tiny bit of tuba (this video is my TH-cam tuba debut!). Brass has been challenging - I'm very happy with my improvement but I'm definitely not fluent on those instruments. Kind of feels like learning a new language, haha!
Regarding the shortness of the original DK Island Swing track, that was always a unique feature of the original song that I found particularly interesting. The original track has a fairly long intro, a somewhat short swing section, and then a slower middle section before looping. I really wanted to emphasize that swing section in my arrangement, while also making sure to include the slower middle section (which sometimes gets left out in other arrangements of this song.) To help out with this, I decided to include some melodic material from "Jungle Japes", which is an arrangement of DK Island Swing by Grant Kirkhope that appears in DK64! It's really funny that you can tell exactly which part of the song is Kirkhope's part because it's written in his signature style, but I think that helps round out the arrangement quite a bit, haha.
This video was a ton of fun (and effort!) to put together - feels good to be back, and I hope you enjoy!

Hope you all enjoy this first arrangement back after a long time of being away! Also, if I look a bit overly serious or stiff in this video... I promise you I am absolutely having fun! It's just been a while since I've been in front of a camera for TH-cam so I think I'm just out of practice of showing my energy on camera LOL. Also playing brass is hard for me so I'm deeeefinitely focusing on that, haha. Hope you all enjoy!
Amazing arrangement went to play harmonica along with it immediately
You're back!!! We missed your music.
"This video was a fun of fun to put together..." there's an error in the description I think.
I love this song so much! 10/10
Amazing as always
He’s back, nature is healing, I’m finally sane in the sun
he came back... with a Swing
He’s eviscerating us with his luminaire
We need the rebrand, like Gandalf's transformation he's back and better then ever!
@@maldonalto6942at the very least, I would laugh if @insaneintherainmusic changed his channel name to SaneInTheSunMusic for April 1 next year, lol
I can't tell if the other replies actually get the joke you're making with "sane in the sun"
_Insane in the rain - is back again!_
*His mood ecstatic - his skills insane!*
_He plays cello, drums and trombone too_
*He's the only member - of the Jazz Band Crew!*
dont wanna be that guy but it's a double bass, not a cello 🙃
I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say you’re among the most talented musicians of all time. It’s clear that you are an incredibly motivated, hardworking musician and this performance is an absolute masterpiece. I’ve loved listening to your arrangements at work (I even make my students listen to them!) and I’m so glad to see you return. I’ve always wanted to study music composition so I can start to write my own songs, and I’ve just been too lazy to do so because of exhaustion from my job/depression, but seeing this video was incredibly motivating. It’s a reminder of what hard work can achieve. Welcome back to TH-cam! I truly missed your stuff.
Come on, I like his music too but that first sentence is a *crazy* exaggeration!
If among can mean within the top million, maybe. This is all time, right?
Of our century fr
how about best youtuber musician of all time?
What music have you made? Nothing? Keep quiet. @@KalanArkais
I like how he plays the clarinet like a sax player when he solos its nice
I was mid comment and almost interrupted myself to say “Holy shit the clari-sax solo” lol
As a trombone player myself, that trombone sounds so good! You've really gotten better over the years. It seems your grip has also improved. I think the hardest thing on trombone is tonguing, if you're feeling extra zealous you could try double tonguing! Think Di-Gi Di-Gi, or for me personally da-ga da-ga. You'll be surprised how much more you can do with that!
Thank you so much! Yeah watching back some of my first videos on trombone, I'm like "wow, did my grip really look like that?" I definitely feel the tonguing thing - that's something I'm going to be looking into next! I felt like it was super hard to get clear articulation on some of the double time passages in this arrangement.
@@insaneintherainmusicthere is also doodle tounging where you use doodle-oodle-oodle which can be helpful
@ley_doggo5614 generally doodle tonguing is much less articulate though! I find it's often most effective when you aren't playing in a texture (i.e. over backgrounds).
@@rgon1 yeah, fair enough :)
I mostly just do a little “tado-tado”
But i should be the last person to take advice from honestly
Only playing trumpet and trombone for 4 years and getting that quality of sound is nothing short of amazing. Bravo to your dedication and hard work
"He's finally back to kick some tail!" Seriously, it's good to have you back, insaneintherain. Your arrangements are always stellar.
HE'S FINALLY HERE, PERFORMING FOR YOU!
O-KAY!! So happy to have you back in the swing of things! What a way to make a re-entrance too- masterful arrangement as always! Loving the Sing Sing Sing inspiration! Looking forward to hearing what you come up with next! 🐒
The swing of things lol
oh hey it’s this guy
I'm a bass trombone player. And I'm genuinely impressed with your sound in the lower register of the tbone. Amazing work.
Welcome back, Carlos. We missed you.
Sounds like he went away for a jazz journey and got enlightened. Now he's bringing all the lessons he learned back for us to enjoy.
Just by listening to it, you would not have guessed it wasn't an actual group performance. Splendid work as always!
That's the goal, haha! Thank you!
He is back, but something is different this time. It is like Carlos took a pilgrimage up a mountain or traveled to many places somewhere else and spent that time in solitude as he unraveled the secrets and hidden knowledge behind Jazz. Then he came back to society to show all of us what he has learned. Absolutely amazing arrangement Carlos!
I remember discovering your videogame orchestra movements when I was 13 (I am 18 now and in my first year of college) and from there is was amazing to see you grow so much and now you are back and better than ever! Thank you for creating music so important throughout my teen years, I will always support you with whatever endeavors you pursue.
Bro is literally the Buddha but jazz
I've also always been reminded of sing sing sing when listening to this song, I'm a partially a jazz drummer so years back I learned Krupa's iconic beat. Then I realised I could play it over this song and it sounded amazing. Awesome ending fill on the drums, you've improved so much on drums during your channel's lifetime it's incredible!
This arrangement was masterfully done (fantastic mixing too!) and sent shivers down my spine, what a way to comeback!!! Thank you for your music!!!
The return of the king... of swing! It's great to see you back at it again! I especially love the Dixieland-like section where the Jungle Hijinx part comes in!
Your dedication to using instruments and not using even a single sound from software is insane
In the rain
The departure was on Stickerbush Symphony and the return is Island Swing. I wouldn't have it any other way. Wonderful work as always!
I didnt hear stickerbrush symphony in this. The slow part is still a part of Jungle Hijinx
@@franklinbadge1215 I was referring to how the last arrangement before he left TH-cam originally was one of Stickerbush Symphony (more specifically the Bramble Blast rendition from Brawl)
@@palmtree2711 My mistake
I love the Louisiana style around 1:20
Also the Ellington style at 2:00
My gosh, this is brilliant, especially considering that literally every instrument involved was recorded acoustically! Such impressive production quality!! It's great to have you back, Carlos :)
You went in worried the material was too short- and came out strong with a 6 minute banger! Absolutely incredible all the way through- what a triumphant return. Welcome back!
He's finally back
And about time too
And this time
He's in a swinging mood!
Pull your ears in closer
If you wanna hear
This DK mashup
The best all year
Wow! I am FEELING that clarinet solo, man! Wooh!
man if the original dkc trilogy ever gets remastered this music needs too be in it that is how talented you are man😁😆
I say this with no exaggeration: I think this is the best arrangement of this piece of music recorded on TH-cam. I love the inclusion of the bits from DK64, that's always been some of my favorite little "variations" that Kirkhope put into his rendition of David Wise's now-legendary composition.
Fantastic work! Thrilled to have you back doing these covers, they really are something special!! ❤🎉
To be honest this guy probably holds that title for a lot of songs for a lot of people.
I don't claim to know a lot of artists, but in my small world this guy's just smth else
This is a hot take, but it’s the correct one. This cover gets 🏆
That might be correct, I have absolutely tried to find a good arrangement on this piece but I think very few people got Grant's take on DK music
There's something very fitting about Carlos' last cover before temporary retirement and his first cover after coming back both being DK music.
Great cover and a great way to return. I love it.
One of my favorite tracks ever! Grant Kirkhope and David Wise are absolutely musical legends
As a beginning music ed student, it is every directors dream to sound like this with all those instruments. This was killer man, nice!
I definitely didn't realize how much I'd missed these until now
The internets one-man band is back & reminding us all that he indeed can play anything, great work as always Carlos, truly glad you're back
This is SUCH a good arrangement! You showed so much love to the source material with this one. Nailed the vibe, the dynamics, all of it:) Great clarinet solo, and as a drummer I loved to see how much you've improved with drums! I can't imagine the amount of work that went into this. Thank you!
I just love jazz so much now because of this channel, thank you IITRM.
I'm so glad we're already getting some of the best video game music a day after his return, DK soundtracks are always bangers
5:19 - Ooooooh my goodness! That was one of the crispiest piano solos I’ve ever heard!
Great to have you back Insaneintherain
Phenomenal. DK always had that Goodman kind of swing feel, and this song really captures it.
The Brass chords in particular were *wonderful*. As someone who plays myself, you've really improved on that trombone, too!
and you threw in that Sing Sing Sing reference at the end! amazing! haha
That little Sing, Sing, Sing reference at the end was really cool! I loved the energy in this arrangement
Oh we are so back!
It was such a pleasure to see one of your covers pop up in my notifications, Carlos!
This one's going on the big band playlist immediately. Love it!
i love this song so much i used to listen to it with my friends in class all the time and this brings back so many memories
DK's in his Country. All's right with the jungle.
I can't wait for this and bramble blast to be on spotify!
Jesus your double time swing is so clean on every part! Every time I see you post anything it inspires me so much to get to work and improve, very happy to know we'll get to hear your sound more often!
hi!!! I just recently found you but I think now you are my favorite person ever. I listen to your music everyday. Especially this one!! (Although personally my favorite is A Cyber's World) I absolutely love your music and this song and I think you are the most talented person ever! I counted, and I think you play 18 instruments not including individual percussion????? which is INSANE?? as your name suggests?? I aspire to be a better musician because of you! I'm going to try to convince my band teacher to play one of your arrangements, I think it would be SO fun. I currently play the sax and clarinet. thank you so much for producing so much AMAZING music!!
Wonderful as always, love when you bring back DK64!
HERE IT IS YEEEEEAAAHHH
Someone's return has never been more exciting for me, especially since I was pretty convinced you really were done for good, BUT NOW THE KING HAS RETURNED, and with the absolute grooviest beat!!
Welcome back, Carlos. It is so great to have you back in full swing ;D
This arrangement is absolutely fantastic!!! Impeccable musicianship as always, well done!
no *one* person should be this good at this many instruments, he's too powerful!!!
I’m so glad you’re back to doing VGM covers, and I think this may already be one of my favorites out of all the ones you’ve done! The uptempo section at 4:30 is absolutely phenomenal!
Glad to have you back, and with a great callback to your first arrangements to boot!
WE ARE SO BACK !!!!! This arrangement is awesome ! I don't really know how to express it but it really feels like you put all your Heart in this arrangement ! And you are playing so much instruments here ! You really feels so much comfortable especially in the brass section !! And this clarinet ! Awesome ! It HAS to be one of my favorite arrangement ever. Thank you very much Carlos. You are coming back better then ever.
Much talent in only a video
he looks like hes having somuch fun making this !!!
we are so back HOLY
This has been the highest quality cover in so long, it's really creative and breaths so much life into an already awesome song
I’ve wanted to learn this song for sound long and finally listening to what it sounds like played on these instruments played by you is just beautiful
God this is a dream come true- my favorite childhood VGM cover producers are starting to upload again :D
Been loving what you do for 8 years, glad to see you back
This is one of the best arrangements of this tune I've ever heard, your redebut does not disappoint! Excited to see what comes in the future!
absolutely phenomenal. you blew this out of the WATER oh my god, i forgot how much i missed your arrangements. truly, the return of the king
I can't even imagine how his brain works for changing all the time the tone in every instrument. He plays from good to fabulous all of them, an autenthic machine. As a sax player, I can tell you your sound is so cool. Keep pushing man!
HOLY SHIT!
I've been a MASSIVE fan of your covers for about a year, but started watching them almost a year AFTER you released your final game cover. So seeing you come BACK to them is such a damn treat. And to start your comeback off with DONKEY KONG COUNTRY... UGH! This is absolutely one of the best covers you've ever done, it's so energetic, and (as a 15 year old who knows nothing about musical skill) I can tell you've grown so much with your playing, your clarinet solos are absolutely INSANE and PACKED WITH ENERGY! I'm so happy you're back, Carlos!
So happy for the return to be such an absolute banger. Welcome back 🎉
Ooooohhhh how i've missed this! What a way to "swing" back into things ;) Welcome back, Carlos!
At 2:42 I love how your hair looks with the headphones on
Just, how many instruments do you play exactly ? This is truly insane. Looks like that big pause has given you the time to reach a new level. You're a music Jedi
LETS GOOOOOO great to have you back Carlos!!!! With a banger track as well of course
It takes most people years to play any one instrument that well, yet you play a myriad of them excellently. Very inspiring bro. Thank you for sharing your heart and incredible talent with the world!
The amount of classic jazz tropes in this makes me very happy
THAT ENDING!!!
Great to see you back and doing this again, I missed these so much! Great work as always :D
A day after his return, and hes already dropping a banger!! Take you time my dude!! Great stuff as always tho!😆👍
I’m impressed by the rhythmic complexity throughout the arrangement and I admire the fast trumpet parts (I play trumpet) as its hard to get good tone at that speed. Also like how you paired the flute with a trumpet with a Harmon mute without its stem; they really complement each other. Excellent first video back
That's the single greatest way to start a song. Period.
I know the exact Benny Goodman song you’re referencing with this, so it not only made me super happy to hear, but it combines two already great pieces of music with your unique jazzy touch. Keep up the good work!
As someone who got into your remixes right as you stopped, it’s great to see you back and be able to look forward to them again! Great work on this one. On a side note, I know requests aren’t very feasible but even so I’d like to see what you could do with The Champion Mipha from Age if Calamity, it’d be neat. Thanks for your hard work!
Dude, you are a musical genius. I'm angry that I'm so late and inferior in this, but at the same time I'm amused by your incredible arrangements. Thank you so much for coming back to TH-cam.
God what a glorious track to return with. My childhood... 😢
Nothing better than Insaneintherain covering DKC to grace you on a gorgeous autumn day… You must’ve climbed DK summit to make this because it is PEAK
This is unironically one of your best arrangements. Bravo!!
Well ain’t that just a lovely lil trombone soli there ❤ Loving your brass skills man!
The last part remembers me of frevo! What great times i had in carnival, specially that one i had in Olinda!
The Return of the King. Excited to hear whatever you are cooking up next!
What timeline is this!?! Welcome back Carlos!! 😄
The best one clearly
I have been waiting for a good arrangement of this song for YEARS! And upon un-retiring you immediately drop this banger. Fantastic.
Ahhh I knew before the end that the Clarinet was going to wail, and my god it did! Feels so good! Fantastic job!!!
This feels like an authentic Benny Goodman clarinet feature. You absolutely nailed it.
Wish the solo section was transcribed but I'll just have to figure it out myself :)
Ура! З поверненням! Нас чекає багато нової чудової музики!❤
"Nice, you play in a band, what instrument?"
Carlos: *Yes*
God dude, what a flex of multi-instrumental ability. Like, people playing different woodwind/stringed instruments sure, but brass, woodwind, bass/guit, drums etc to this level? Really lovely
First cover being back it’s already peak!!
Its so great to have you back! Amazing video! You're a one man big band and you sound fantastic! It's crazy how far you have come! Wishing you the best!
Your instrumental execution is always amazing, but that double bass action in specific is just perfect. Thank you for all the effort you put in making all this, you really inspire a ton of us out there. Hope you're doing great, greetings from Mexico!
I'm glad that you are back to doing music covers on youtube. I want you to know that we as a community really love you and your music and are really glad to see that you're back.
I've been wanting to listen to a big band DK island swing for so long that listening to this one was a beautiful experience!
I'm beyond stoked to have you back, and seeing that you were coming back to making arrangements on youtube brought a huge smile to my face. I remember when I first discovered you when you released your Pollyanna cover, and I've been a close follower of your channel and music ever since. Thank you for all the great music you've made so far, and here's to the future great music from your channel!!
I still remember playing one of your arrangements as a member of a VGM jazz band at my university. It's good to have you back.
Carlosオリジナルの曲もアレンジもどっちも最高🎉
My 👏 boi 👏 is 👏 BAAAAAAAACK!!!!
You don’t realize how much a fan of someone you are until they retire and *THEN* come back, I am actually so hyped!
Something about seeing these soulful arrangments of game music that I love just really brightens my day.
I was literally practicing this song on soprano sax yesterday!! Absolute masterpiece of a cover
Carlos is back, the world is healing!
Love the mixture of Jungle Japes and DK Island Swing! This is a great mesh of those two pieces, love what you did with it!
i spent most of my teenage listening to your music, i spent more days with you than in any of my school books together so its sweet to have you back :)
you always did so much collabs even in the past, but i feel hearing you alone is like a throwback
