After not touching UNDERTALE for many years... I think it's time for another UNDERTALE tune! This was a tune that I didn't arrange for my album Live at Grillby's, mainly due to me not really having any interest in the song. As the years passed, though, I realized how fun this song would sound as a jazz klezmer/polka/fast swing kind of tune. Learning to play clarinet was the icing on the cake, and finally enabled me to do this arrangement as I envisioned it! I, like countless others, played UNDERTALE around when it first came out, and fell in love with the characters. I think this song captures Papyrus pompous yet silly nature super well - the melody has a lot of ornaments that you'd find in classical music, and each phrase opens with simple arpeggios, but usually with a silly little turnaround. Fun tune!
Bonetrousle, in its original state, has a more of a straight-ahead eighth note rock feel, but I decided to double the time feel and give it a faster jazz feel! This was a great opportunity to work on my double time swing chops on drums and bass. In hindsight, I probably didn't have to right hand pluck every single note on the waking bass part during the double time swing sections, but... it's fine haha. My fingers didn't bleed. I also picked up a Zildjian A Swish Knocker for this video (one of my favorite-sounding cymbals for a classic jazz big band sound) and a Zildjian K splash cymbal! I've been doing a ton of research into drum tuning and cymbal selection... it's a lot more fun doing it in real life than fiddling with settings in Superior Drummer, let me tell you.
I'm also proud to say that this cover has no MIDI in it at all - everything is a live instrument! This has been a goal of mine for years now, to be technically proficient at staple instruments in a jazz combo to do a no-MIDI multi-instrumental cover. Now that I have these instruments and the mics to record them successfully, I can make it happen! Can't wait to do it with more songs!

I mentioned in a Community Tab post a few weeks ago that I'll be bringing in some more people onto the team to help me make videos more consistently - this is the first step in that. Pete did a great job editing, and you can expect to see his work on the channel in the future to hopefully bring up the quality of the videos to another level!

if you’re passionate about music, you should definitely join a college band when you get to college! its a HUGE improvement from middle/high school band and most schools offer a jazz band that you dont need to major in music to be in!

I didn’t change the scale or anything about the original melody in this one! The A section pretty much just uses C harmonic minor, with a couple of instances of #4 (possibly suggesting double harmonic minor?)

Return to Grillby's, 5 years later. Great as always. Arranging with such creativity, yet resonating with our nostalgia... Fun, sad, epic, you really have a good sense of how to get to us.
I remember the Live at Grillby's album so vividly. I listened to it a couple times a day for that whole summer when I first found it! Then the beginning of the Sinnoh project reminded me of your existence, and by then I had acquired much more of a taste for jazz. I've been on the lookout for you ever since.
Your more prevalent use of the clarinet lately has also been a breath of fresh air, as it opens up a whole new timbre to play with, even going so far as to change the feeling of a piece you had already arranged (love both of your eterna forest arrangements, even if I've grown fond of the first one)
All in all, this comment is a catch all to praise all of your recent work since I caught an upload early-ish. Keep up the good work and your goofy self Carlos. Thank you again for all the wonderful music

I’m kinda surprised that you went through the whole of 2016-2018, did an Undertale album, yet still never covered this theme up until now. Not even an Undertale fan here, I love this theme, yet I love what you did with it even more! It seems that many people interpret/remix Bonetrousle in a heavily-electro way to go along with the synth instrumentation of the original, but I absolutely ADORE how you went the more laid-back acoustic jazz route! I’m currently watching through the Ken Burns “Jazz” documentary on Amazon, and hearing your take on this song really reminds me of that Roaring 20s era of jazz...I think it’s the drums and the clarinet, which by the way you played fantastically, especially the clarinet. You’ve picked up trumpet, clarinet, and apparently you’ve ordered an accordion....you’re becoming too powerful with your versatility!!!

I have been a silent lurker for years, I love your music. (I created a choreography to your "It's a Beautiful Day Outside" piece for a college class once). When this popped up on my recommended, I was like "Huh, I know all of his Undertale jazz covers, something seems off here". I then realized THAT THIS IS NEW CONTENT AND I AM SO PUMPED!!!
