Scott, you got too many fans in The Netherlands. There probably was one in the flight control center thinking "oh Scott Manson is heading home, let's make sure he arrives back in Glasgow more or less on time ...."
I had an awful time on an Etihad flight on the way back from Australia a couple of years ago. Flew in to Amsterdam to get a connecting KLM flight to Birmingham and the minute I got to Amsterdam I felt so relieved because I knew I was going to get excellent service. Both at Schiphol airport and on the KLM flight back to the UK I felt I was treated like royalty! Honestly the service was excellent, the staff really kind and helpful. (Oh and I loved their recent TV advert about the different generations of girls being flight attendants until the last girl was actually the pilot of the KLM flight. Loved that.) Anyway, big thumbs up from me to KLM! Totally recommend them.
We’ve only flown with KLM a couple times but they were excellent. Oddly enough, we took a RyanAir flight about 2 weeks ago. Left 10 minutes late but arrived On time. Crew were good but the pilots were awesome. So funny, they kept everyone updated during the short flight, and they actually did come out and chat with passengers as they left. This was our third time with Ryanair but definitely the best experience to date.
What a strange coincidence! We're just back from holiday yesterday, and the first video I saw after switching the telly on was this! Yes, you guessed it - we just SUCCEEDED at exactly this (ok, we never actually tried to). We were KLM from Barcelona to Glasgow with a 45 minute layover in Amsterdam. The inbound flight was 35 mins late, so we missed the connection! KLM put us up in a Hilton for the night, with full board! (and we were just flying economy). Sounds great on paper for sure, but the reality was that we arrived at the hotel after dinner was finished, had little more than 4 hours sleep, then had to catch the early flight to Glasgow, leaving the hotel before breakfast even started. We did try asking them to put us on the 12:25pm flight from AMS instead, but they didn't have space. At least we could have enjoyed the breakfast then! I have no idea why they allow these super-short connections in Amsterdam - this must happen all the time - and we weren't the only people in the queue at the KLM desk getting hotel vouchers.
A few weeks ago I was flying out of Berlin with KLM in their E195 E2, once it was time for boarding the captain came out and made an announcement letting us know that they had a birdstrike on final and needed to get an engineer from Amsterdam to inspect and clear the flight, they set a delay of 4 hours. Just like your experience, the entire crew then came out and spoke to everyone at the gate to personally answer any questions and apologize. A big thumbs up to KLM for training crew like this, it isn't much but it makes a huge difference on passengers.

Really enjoy KLM, a proper airline that gives out food and drink. Used them last month Glasgow to Lisbon via Schipol. Like you, had to go to desk for return flight and both flights were on same card. Using them again this Thursday to Zagreb via Schipol and back. Also, again next month to Warsaw. Enjoy Schipol as its all under one roof and easy to transfer - so much easier than London airports. Hope you managed a beer in the Heineken bar.
KLM, and other carriers, put effort into training their crews to make sure they offer their passengers a pleasant flight and that's a sword that cuts both ways. The crew does what the company wants them to do, but they understand the "why?" and feel supported, which results in job satisfaction* and them enjoying the process, even if they have to eat humble pie with regard to the passengers at times. The colliery is this costs KLM money, which is reflected in their ticket prices. Where as, I imagine, at places like Ryan Air, training consists of telling the crews what they want to have happen, but leaving it to their own initiative to make it happen (i.e. only communicating the objectives, but not the tools; because they're too cheap to pay the consultants who can actually do this) *AND* blaming the crews if things get out of hand. Two different business models: "value for money" vs. "what do you want for a few lousy bucks?" (*): *AND* job retention, which is really important. You can have the best hirers and a competitive salary package, but if people start to feel they're in a dead end and you don't really care about them, they're *gone*.
Last flew KLM pre-Covid on one of their 744s before they retired them and everything went phenomenal! Flew from Prague to LA with a layover at Shiphol in the morning rush hour - they used a bus gate for the inbound flight and I still made it to my second gate, thru the security, in less than half an hour. Unless my destination is the hub, it's usually giving me very comparable options between flying KLM and AF, I always go for KLM (CDG is a nightmare)
Oh I didn't realise until near the end that you were on the last AMS-GLA flight of the day. That is almost never cancelled because that aircraft stays the night in Glasgow and operates the first flight back to AMS in the morning, which is full of connecting passengers, so they will try and operate it at all costs, even with a delay.
Scott - just as an aside I am flying into Glasgow at end of month from Southampton with Easyjet as I am going to watch St Mirren play St.Johnstone (I am retired and a football nut) trying to get to as many Scottish grounds as possible and "The Buddies" home will be a new one for me. As you are a St.Mirren fan I thought it would be appropriate to take in your home ground...Also thanks to your airport vids I have booked on the 500 bus into the city and will use Scotrail for the trip to Paisley. Up the Buddies !!!
Hey Scott, I find KLM like yourself a pretty good company. I have used them plenty of times on the Dublin-Amsterdam route and vice versa. That said I only use them when booking way in advance as their prices are by far the highest on this particular route. Aer Lingus and Ryanair both offer far cheaper fares. But when it comes to service and care KLM has never let me down. So I agree with you when it comes to KLM.
KLM have built up a great network of flights from the UK. Virtually every UK airport has KLM flights, only a tiny fraction have our own flag carrier (BA) operating from them. My experience is KLM are very good at connections and I think this is possibly why. I know last year when I transferred there on a short connection they were very pro active in flagging passengers on certain connecting flights take priority and get taken to the front of the queue to ensure they don't miss the connection. So I feel far more confident booking connecting flights with KLM than I would BA, for example.
KLM is really amazing with calming down the passengers. (or we both had the same captain, haha) Last year I was flying Zürich-Amsterdam-Belfast and the Zürich-Amsterdam flight got delayed by 1,5 hours because they had works on one of the runways in Amsterdam. The captain came up to the gate to explain the delay. About one hour before the new departure time he started boarding and on board he walked through the whole cabin to answer any kind of questions but was ready in case they will get a departure time frame from another delayed flight. Before we got into Amsterdam, he announced all the missed connections (and believe me, there were a lot!) and nobody was complaining. Finally I still got my Dutch Fries and a Croquette, because the plane to Belfast came from Germany and had the same problem as the one from Zürich and was delayed by over an hour.
I loved KLM 20 years ago. To be fair I've not flown them for a long, long time so don't really know what they are like now. Another great video from Scott. Quite funny him wanting a long delay :)
I am Dutch myself, I think partly because of the Dutch communication culture and that hierarchy is neglected in the Netherlands, the Dutch are very open to the outside world. My flight from Cork was cancelled last year, while the new KLM staff and pilot were also in the waiting room. Then it turned out that the KLM plane was in Shannon and we had to go there by bus. The KLM pilot and staff were very friendly and helpful. He explained that because of the storm the plane could not fly to Cork. But both the staff and the pilot reassured everyone. Because many also had a connecting flight in Amsterdam. However, after three hours of waiting there was still no bus, whereupon the pilot said, the bus driver is probably still in the pub? That was an icebreaker and everyone had to laugh. But in the meantime the KLM staff called Schiphol to arrange hotels for the passengers. The flight from Shannon turned out to be half full, where the pilot and staff gave all passengers extra drinks and snacks. After all, there was too much on board. The pilot also came by personally during the flight to offer his apologies and to ask if the staff needed to arrange anything.
I'm never flying with KLM again. This summer from Oslo-Amsterdam the flight was overbooked and I was forced to wait for the next flight. What they didn't tell me was that my checked in luggage went with the first flight, and it took them 2 months and me contacting them nearly 30 times to get my bag delivered to my home. Awful customer support.
Thanks Scott, brilliant video. You picked the correct airport, but the wrong airline :-) I was delayed by just over 3 hours when flying from Amsterdam to Belgrade on Transavia (KLM’s low cost airline) and qualified for EU 261. Schiphol is actually my favourite airport. The Transavia Captain came to the gate to apologise and explain the problems - must be a KLM policy.
Great video You say that about KLM and the pilots , I've experienced that with Easyjet, long story short, smaller aircraft than expected, hot in Greece, too heavy for runway, so off loaded fuel but obviously had to divert. In out Milan in an aviation style formula 1 pit stop and into LGW 40 mins late. Every update was given by the captain in the cabin on the intercom and the personally through the cabin in case some didn't understand the weight issue. Top marks to Easyjet
You might try Lelystad Airport which is still not open yet. It is below sea level in the former sea Zuiderzee, now the province of Flevoland. And guess what, a battle was fought out here too.
It's interesting how airlines buy aircraft. KLM, previously a loyal Douglas customer, switched to Boeing when the 747 arrived. Now KLM is changing over to Airbus.
@@alexmcwhirter6611 There are many reasons why KLM would want to switch to Airbus. One are the issues with 777 and 737 that is in the news, which also lead to production/delivery issues at Boeing . second KLM is part of AirFranceKLM and AF uses mostly Airbus. This gives possibilities of scale efficiency/synergy in training staff, maintenance and spare parts . Furthermore are cleaner, more efficient planes needed to comply with more stringent EU regulations. Another is that with the war in Ukraine European carriers have to bypass Ukraine and Russian airspace to flights to Asia and Australia. The extra distance are at the limits of current Boeing planes , but Airbus planes would have enough range for that..
@@lws7394 Indeed. I hear what you say but Boeing aircraft are quite capable of flying Europe-Japan non-stop ...just check the schedules with NH and JL. Even Europe-China there's VS flying London-Shanghai non-stop with 787. As for Europe-Australia check BA which makes an en route stop in S'pore and deploys 777-300ER.
@@alexmcwhirter6611 Well depending on the type 787s can fly between 11k and 15k km. The distance Amsterdam to Tokyo via Russian air space is a good 9000 km. I can't find the detour distance from Amsterdam , but Helsinki to Seoul is 4000km extra. So the distance becomes critical , esp. when a flight might have unfavourable head winds ...
@@lws7394 Indeed. I mean BA uses 787s for Tokyo and the two Japanese airlines use 777-300ERs for Europe. (A year or so ago when demand was limited there was ANA using 787s for LHR-HND).
Great job of that pilot. I had one of those talking to the passengers about how bad the visibility was and that’s why he asked to stay in a waiting pattern. In a less than30 € flight from Bangkok to Phuket. Every passenger appreciated his safety first approach. Unfortunately not very common in thai traffic
Hi Scott!! Very interesting premise and outcome!! You are certainly hale and hearty doing all that walking through airports. Cheers!! Chuck in Northern New England
I’m a huge KLM fan too. I did an Amsterdam-Beijing about 12 years ago and the crew brought me a tiny bit of caviar from First so I could try it! Can’t imagine any other airline doing that.
I am just back from Pisa and like yourself I broke my journey up. It was half the price of a direct flight ✈️ from Dublin. Dublin - Gatwick - Pisa and the same coming back. Makes for a slightly longer travel time and you do have to go through security twice!! Might try it again sometime. Really enjoyed today's video
Great video. We had to get from Budapest (after a stag do) to Alicante or Murcia earlier this year. And the cheapest and best option from KLM via Amsterdam. Both planes in time. 90 min connection in Amsterdam and despite it being a massive airport - we had enough time for a beer between flights. Great little planes. Sandwiches and drinks on both. They guaranteed the connection. Sold as a connecting flight and was cheaper than booking two separate flights. And stayed within the Schengen so never had to show our passports.
I mean EU261 is only applicable on flights which are delayed 3h upon arrival (doors open) and or flights that are cancelled. But this excepts flights that are cancelled due to an extraordinary circumstance. Example, weather atc restrictions.
Scott, you unlucky guy!! I travelled to Amsterdam August 2023, Easyjet, waited 90 minutes to get past immigration! Later I travelled by train from Amsterdam to Berlin, the train was late but not late enough to get any money back from DB. The homeward journey was with BA from Berlin to Heathrow, this flight was on time, but I still had problems at Berlin airport. With the flight being silly O'clock in the morning (before sparrow breakfast time) I stayed the night before at an airport hotel. Got off the train and into the terminal to buy a bite to eat, couldn't find the hotel. Eventually I asked at an information desk, and was told (scolded like a child) that the hotels are at the front of the building, where do I think! So I said I'd arrived from the railway station which is situated under the terminal building, which way to the front? ... rude cow (sorry for the language) wasn't helpful at all. With 4 directions from which to select I eventually found the right one.
Just subscribed to ur channel. As a fellow Scot and seasoned traveler I've visited 35 countries and I'm now resident in Thailand. I feel you are being harsh on Ryan air. I've flown them a lot over several years without incident. However, KLM is a different ball game. Having endured a broken seat on take off which left me nearly in the guy behind me lap, to grumpy Old Stewardesses. My least fav air line. Now I'm going to watch your Living in Dublin video. Keep on travelling
Really enjoyable video Scott. Airlines change from time to time and it seems, right now, that staff are exceptionally motivated. You may not know this but a couple of days ago KLM's CEO said her airline must reduce its operating costs to become more efficient. Netherlands' aviation media reports that KLM is reviewing its onboard service and looks to follow its rivals with BoB catering before end 2025. AF hopes, its union members permitting, to trial BoB on two routes starting January 2025.
Good Afternoon, Scott. I enjoyed watching your TH-cam video! I did not know the history of Schiphol Airport. I would never have thought a sea battle had occurred many centuries ago in the 1500s on the site of the present-day Schiphol Airport. I look forward to watching more of your TH-cam videos in the future. Alister Ian Hoult, Carrying Place, Ontario, Canada.
I'm watching this 3 days after doing BUD - AMS - LBA on KLM, leaving BUD at 17:05. Everything was on-time with the amazing service that you got on your flights. The only downside was having both the landing and take-off at AMS on the Polderbaan with it's 25 minute taxiing, which was scheduled into the flight time.
Some airports/airlines will also force you to go and print your ticket (even when you have an e-ticket) so they can try to take your bags off you for the hold.
Klm are really excellent, those cheese sandwiches are great. My flight from Bordeaux to schipol then schipol to Manchester was chaotic, I had a 40 minutes connection in schipol and obviously not enough with getting through customs and finding the gate. Flight missed , another 20 minutes to find the right desk to go to but after finding it they put me on the next flight, another 30 minute walk and got to the gate just in time to board. Just to say Schipol is enormous.
Last year, I went from Edinburgh to Stuttgart and back by KLM. Diverted via Zürich on the way out (and the meal voucher basically covered nothing). Delayed overnight on the way back. In a couple of weeks, I'm going back to Stuttgart. By train. I'd already ruled them out of long-haul after their Business Class vegan meals on one flight were green salad to start, slightly bigger green salad as a main course, and fruit salad for dessert. And obviously no special meals on the short haul hop afterwards, when I was starving.
Not used KLM since 2004 Manchester to Lyon via Amsterdam. Glad to see they still give out free food. I used Wizz Air for the first time this week from Luton to Tallinn and they were great. Flying back Ryanair Warsaw to Birmingham in a couple of days. They fly from Modlin Airport but I can travel there on a train and connecting bus, what could possibly go wrong. Also FlixBus have been spot on from Tallinn and Riga, hope National Express to Manchester is as smooth.
On all my trips abroad, the most memorable ones were when things went wrong. Those are the ones where I have interesting stories to tell. And FYI, my memorable Flight From Hell was on KLM many years ago.
Have to agree with louis ..loved this video scott. Your humour is brilliant.shame your flights were on time or as near as....so now you have to book more klm.😊
All these airports you have passed through on your travels seem to involve huge amounts of walking whilst lugging all your bags and cases. Is allowance made for older or infirm folk who cannot walk far - or fast - or both? (I did notice the 'flat escalator' at Schipol).
Flown a few times on KLM mostly from AMS - LAX or SFO as we got discounted rates because at that time they sponsored the football club I support. Also were very good on upgrades as I worked at Heathrow but in cargo (not with KLM)....always found their staff friendly and helpful. Was stuck in Germany once when there was an ATC strike so managed to rebook on flight to AMS and onward flight to EMA as couldn't get into LHR.....train back to London and tube home...long day..
In my working days - long since passed - I travelled on KLM quite frequently and thought very highly of them. Not quite the same for Schiphol though, which even back then could be a nightmare !
Hi Scott, I like KLM too. My fave airline. Never really had any issues with them except - guess what - my luggage was lost between Schipol and Manchester. However, it was delivered to my home the next day.
KLM Gold member here. I've been flying with KLM since 2012, and from my experience one of the best airlines in the world, specially on long overseas flights. Delta went down after covid, flying on 23 years old Airbus from AMS to ATL. Schiphol airport is on of the best airports on the world, with KLM lounge on both Schengen and non area. Try to do a transfer at CDG in Paris, and you will see the difference.
I flew KLM regularly as an UM when I was a kid and they were great. I also flew with them to Johannesburg and they were excellent. After they were taken over by Air France things slipped. I had an experience with them flying from Dar Es Salaam 18 years ago that was so bad I vowed never to fly with them again. I've stuck to that even taking indirect flights and paying more with other carriers. Loathe them
Air France and KLM moved to a new paper boarding pass format where multiple flights appear on the same boarding pass. This happened to me in 2022 flying KLM from Toronto to Glasgow. As for EU261 a lot of people don’t realize the protection covers the entirety of their journey leaving the EU. Last year I was flying Frankfurt to Sydney, Australia. First two connections (Frankfurt to Helsinki and Helsinki to Singapore) were flawless but final connection flight (Singapore to Sydney) was delayed 14 hours by Qantas. Once I landed in Sydney I filed an EU261 claim with Qantas and the following day got approved for €600 plus reimbursement of hotel and ground transport
Fun fact, KLM has long flown from the airport now called BER. They flew SXF to AMS since they could not fly into THF or TXL during the occupation of Berlin that lasted until 1990.
I recently did LHR-AMS and return a few days later with KLM and got those same SMS (and Whatsapp) messages "telling" me to check in my cabin bag. Therefore, I packed accordingly and split liquids (and particularly weight) between both bags. On both occasions they initially refused my cabin bag when I tried to check in. I showed them their unambiguous messages at which point they said "we only mean trolley bags". I suggested (firmly) that they put that in their messages then and insisted they check in my bags at no charge as I had packed based on their instructions.
sadly it’s not a new airport, just a “new” terminal at the old Schoenefeld. And due to certification delays the “new” terminal is already a decade old.
Glad to see that I am not the only one that thinks BER is a confusing mess. 29 years of planning and 14 years of construction and that’s the best they came up with. Not very “German!”
I always take a camera way with me along with spare batteries. So stating (truthfully) that I have batteries in my hand luggage is always enough to stop airlines insisting I check in my hand luggage.
Completely agree on Berlin/Brandenburg airport, 100% "German Efficiency" as they say (though I'm surprised, the Schengen concourse seems big enoguh, the non-Schengen one is too squeezed out). And yeah Schiphol literally means "ship hole". Cheers

Great video Scott, sods law that when you want something to go wrong it doesn't yet when you don't want anything to go wrong it does. 🤔🙄.
Nice video. Worked in AMS for a couple of years, love KLM and Schiphol - great Business Lounges there.
Hi Scott. Such an entertaining video. More please, as they are such fun to watch.
Great video
You say that about KLM and the pilots , I've experienced that with Easyjet, long story short, smaller aircraft than expected, hot in Greece, too heavy for runway, so off loaded fuel but obviously had to divert. In out Milan in an aviation style formula 1 pit stop and into LGW 40 mins late. Every update was given by the captain in the cabin on the intercom and the personally through the cabin in case some didn't understand the weight issue.
Top marks to Easyjet
Top video scott..thank you.
You might try Lelystad Airport which is still not open yet. It is below sea level in the former sea Zuiderzee, now the province of Flevoland. And guess what, a battle was fought out here too.
KLM one of the great airlines. Flown on DC9's, DC8''s, F-27's and a sole DC10 many decades ago. DC8's being my favourite.
The extra distance are at
the limits of current Boeing planes , but Airbus planes would have enough range for that..
Steve Marsh recommended, quite liked this first vid so I subbed
Thanks
Great job of that pilot. I had one of those talking to the passengers about how bad the visibility was and that’s why he asked to stay in a waiting pattern. In a less than30 € flight from Bangkok to Phuket. Every passenger appreciated his safety first approach. Unfortunately not very common in thai traffic
Hi Scott!! Very interesting premise and outcome!! You are certainly hale and hearty doing all that walking through airports. Cheers!!
Chuck in Northern New England
Brilliant concept and great video, Well done Scott
I’m a huge KLM fan too. I did an Amsterdam-Beijing about 12 years ago and the crew brought me a tiny bit of caviar from First so I could try it! Can’t imagine any other airline doing that.
Great Video Scott
great Scott
Around 11 years ago, I flew KLM from SFO to AMS. It was an old MDDouglas and the flight was fine but very loud.
Klm is a great airline to use to connect to other flights via Schipol .
A great concept for a video Scott. What a shame those damned airlines were too reliable! 😊
That beer looked lush 👍 Great content as always.
3 flights in 1day - well done, great being with you.
KLM is a good airline, and I have always had a good experience when flying aboard KLM.
Great video Scott :)
Actually it was a lake battle as Haarlemmermeer means 'Haarlemmer Lake' ..😉
@@lws7394 Thank-you for the additional information, Best Wishes, Alister Ian Hoult, Canada.
Got a similar journey next week same flight back from AMS, so this was perfectly timed video 😀
KLM seems to always send those "the plane is full" texts for some reason, even if it isn't. I do like the free drink/snack which is a rarity nowadays
@@psprog KLM is seeking to cut costs and management are looking at going BoB at end 2025.
Love your video’s Scott…..🏴🏴🏴
With Ryanair, how much extra do you have to pay to get a pilot?
I live near Norwich, so Schiphol is the ideal hub airport for me.
Well done to the KLM captain for speaking face-to-face with the passengers. And no, you'd NEVER get that sort of customer service on Ryanair!
The flying blue club is a new one on me . When I was a frequent flier I was a member of the flying Dutchman with KLM . Happy days ..
My flight in July was hours delayed. Can I still claim?
Another fab video Scott
Flew on KLM on a few occasions, always great crews. And yes Amsterdam is a huge airport, but surprisingly organized
Amazing. We fly to Valencia next week
The saga continues
Scott, was that the new Berlin Airport you were flying from, it looked dreadfully old and 1970's style concrete mess.
sadly it’s not a new airport, just a “new” terminal at the old Schoenefeld. And due to certification delays the “new” terminal is already a decade old.
Glad to see that I am not the only one that thinks BER is a confusing mess. 29 years of planning and 14 years of construction and that’s the best they came up with. Not very “German!”
I flew a round trip from Schipol airport to Stockholm in 2019 with KLM and enjoyed the experience.
Don't tell Scott about energy drinks, if he gets so high on coffee!
Scott, when you and son off to Australia , are vlogging the trip hopefully 😊
How many miles did you walk up and down that Schengen airport?
I always take a camera way with me along with spare batteries. So stating (truthfully) that I have batteries in my hand luggage is always enough to stop airlines insisting I check in my hand luggage.
KLM out of or in to Amsterdam seems to run like clockwork. It’s a really good well-run airline.
Completely agree on Berlin/Brandenburg airport, 100% "German Efficiency" as they say (though I'm surprised, the Schengen concourse seems big enoguh, the non-Schengen one is too squeezed out). And yeah Schiphol literally means "ship hole". Cheers
Those coach seats on KLM don't look half bad, but now someone's going to roast them as a reply because they've flown KLM and I have not
