When you have an open toilet drain pipe, I suggest putting a heavy rag in it or other type cover while working around it to catch any wayward tools, bolts or any other accidently dropped stuff. Hey boy, stuff happens.

Circa 1991 I was using bread to stop leaks so I could SOLDER with FIRE a new valve. Learned on the very first one to Remove the valve guts before heat. Bread worked. It stopped the dribble.Sealing the base of the toilet is an art. These products make art achieveable.
Agree, I have one, is impossible to clog. I've been clog free for 3 years. No one, friends or family has been able to clog it. I was worried at first with it being low flow but no issues at all and love it❤
One of the first things I did when I bought my house was to replace every toilet with Toto Drakes. Went from clogs every week to virtually no clogs ever. A few times when the kids used baseball mitts worth of TP, we've thrown some dish soap in and let it sit before flushing again. That usually does it. Kids. But seriously Toto Drakes ROCK!
Here's a tip on your smelly silicone. Silicone that smells like vinegar is an Acetic curing silicone. Another kind of silicone that doesn't give off much of a smell is an Organotin type of Silicone like GE II. Both are 100% silicone but one just smells a lot worse than the other one. Stop using the one that smells like vinegar.

buy type 2 silicone its non voc and doesn't have the vinegar smell, the tubes look almost exactly the same, but they'll say type 1, or type 2 somewhere on the tube
Vinegar is barely considered a VOC. Most people are referring to automotive paints, primers or clear coat when they refer to VOC. Or specific chemicals used to thin, dissolve, or slow the curing time of a catalytic reaction. Xylene, Toluene, etc. If someone can't stand the smell of vinegar for a couple days, I think that's not worth addressing.

Have you used the wax less seals, I love them they cost a bit more but makes foolproof. And if something happens while you're installing, you can take it up and reuse it. Great job, personally I like Kohler Cimarron Elongated only. Thats a excellent toilet. A bit noisy though.

It’s already waterproof and gas tight with the gasket and the wax ring… adding silicone doesn’t waterproof it anymore than it already is… hence the overboard “ocd” method of adding additional waterproofing
No, the vinegar smell is from RTV silicone which has an acetic acid cure. There are other cure types that don't smell, but the acetic acid one is pretty common.
Toto toilets are great if you want a toilet that has a powerful flush and can last the life of the house. American Standard Vormax toilets are amazing too.

Only thing we've ever had to do is change the internals in the back of the tank maybe twice and that was only because the flapper wasn't sealing correctly. We had our bathroom completely renovated and expanded. I love it. A huge shower with a built in bench. The best part is the new toilet. I got the tallest one available and the best part is the super fancy bidet installed on it. It looks like the controls for a space shuttle. I can’t believe I didn’t get this sooner. Hygiene is so critical and this makes it perfect. You can control every aspect to the smallest degree. People laugh but once you’ve had one, you would not go back.
I've had a bidet toilet seat installed on mine for several years now, one of the best upgrades ever. Mine heats the water, heats the seat also - a great thing during the colder months.
In Massachusetts it's against code to caulk the bottom of the toilet. The theory is if it leaks you will see the water on the bottom of the toilet on the the tiles.
I had a renter for 16 years and he left the place in horrible condition. I called a Plummer who charged me $80 to jingle the handle and tell me I need a new toilet. The toilet was ENCASED. I drained it with a hand pump made for kerosene. I covered it with a trash bag and pulled it out into the yard. Then, I set my first toilet! Oatey spacers saved me. Thanks to Oatey and thanks for your videos.

Dude I love that little can. I personally prefer to use repair flanges that have a gasket but it's only cause I'm paranoid I'm prertt sure that oatey one will work just fine. I think oatey makes one where u can use Allen keys to tighten the gasket so it will lock itself into the pipe I like those too cause it's anchoring the flange to the pipe and the floor. Again could be overkill but ik a parajoid guy.
I bought Drake as I could NOT fix a leaky flapper on a lowboy Eljer. It could not be fixed. I had two and have replaced everything several times but they still trickle until I took your advice and set a Drake and yes, it flushes very well! Agreed, they are great!

Also do you happen to know the name of the wrench he uses to loosen and tighten up the compression nut on the stop valve? I just use a regular pair of pliers but sometimes they can be a pain in the ass to use if there's not that much room between the toilet and the wall so i end up having to do some crazy yoga positions to get leverage on it especially if it's an old copper pipe and i gotta back up on it with another pair of pliers so i dont do abything crazy like break off the pipe from a fitting in the wall lol
There’s a little plastic lip on the underside of the yellow flange you’re supposed to remove if you don’t use a red spacer that’s at least 1/4”. I believe in that case, you’re also supposed to use a wax rim underneath the yellow flange (then another on top when you set the toilet). Per manufacturer instructions.
@@replumb if you don’t use a red spacer, the instructions say you “MUST” (written in caps) remove the lip AND use a wax rim under the flange. Read the instructions before installing to prevent issues down the road.

I use a washer with a nut with round side pointing down on the toilet flange. Above the porcelain bowl base I use two metal washers with plastic trim washer between them and the round side of the nut pointing up.

The vinegar smell is an additive. Its a mould inhibitor. 100 percent silicon is odourless

I usually use s second wax ring just to smash into the gap around the flange when I do upstairs toilets to seal, just an option from the silicone 🤙👍

There’s a little plastic lip on the underside of the yellow flange you’re supposed to remove if you don’t use a red spacer that’s at least 1/4”. I believe in that case, you’re also supposed to use a wax rim underneath the yellow flange (then another on top when you set the toilet). Per manufacturer instructions.
It comes with a gasket you can’t use instead
@@replumb if you don’t use a red spacer, the instructions say you “MUST” (written in caps) remove the lip AND use a wax rim under the flange. Read the instructions before installing to prevent issues down the road.

I use a washer with a nut with round side pointing down on the toilet flange. Above the porcelain bowl base I use two metal washers with plastic trim washer between them and the round side of the nut pointing up.
