Don't Waste Urea Nitrogen Fertilizer On The Lawn This Year

  • Urea nitrogen is a hybrid organic nitrogen source that is commonly used in lawn fertilizers. It only works when their is biological life that is active in a lawn meaning it is highly dependent on air/soil temps, aerated soil, and microbial life.
    If you are going to apply a fertilizer to your lawn that includes a significant portion of Urea nitrogen then you will be best served by waiting until environmental conditions are ideal so as to limit waste and pollutants into the water system.

    This is by far the best TH-cam video on nitrogen use on a lawn. As he says. nitrogen levels change with air temperature, lawn ph, water, lighting, soil bacteria and soil aeration. All of these have an effect on nitrogen. Yes, you can put nitrogen on your lawn and it winds up in the air. As nitrogen leaches in soil, millions of tons of nitrates wind up in our waterways each year. Synthetic nitrogen does nothing to improve your soil, it is like giving your self a quick boost of caffeine. In my opinion, it is best to use organic fertilizers. They are slower acting but improve the soil and you do not have to be concerned about leaching

      It isn’t, I had an are of about 100sq ft that was dead, I cleared it, roughed up the ground added some top soil, threw down some seed, granted the first 3 days was raining then I watered 3 times a day for 2 days and I have grass sprouting.
      I’m in Mo, and I planted Berenburg perennial rye with yellow jacket coating. It’s currently spring and temps are around 70s
      It’s really not complicated

    My lawn in January is green As an emerald rt now. Jan 8. In the fall I tilled in 4 tons of mushroom compost. My neighbors gawk at me. The back yard I blended compost in the clay, green but not dark so back yard I hit it with 46-0-0 and it’s green now getting darker. Ph is like 6.5 on average. The best way is to add lots of organic matter and aerate yearly and cut with sharp blades

    👍🏻Good Morning. I tried Urea in liquid form last Oct/Nov by mixing in 1/2 lb. /1 gal of water / 1k sqft. I sprayed on grass and let sit overnight and water in the am. I seems to work well for a quick green up. I wouldn't use as a normal feeding though seens to work well for color pop. Your thoughts?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Should work well for a quick color pop when soil temps are high enough to support active microbial life. As soil drops from 55 to 45 that activity drops off quickly. That's why fall and mid spring is good. Late spring isn't all that great because you probably shouldn't be pushing quick growth into summer and early spring things haven't woken up early enough... not to mention Spring growth flush generally happens naturally. As is the case for many products, this IMO is best used situationally.

    Hey Brian,
    This is the video I was looking for about urea based fertilizers. I purchased spring fert one from GCI Turf with 2.5% urea so wondering if I made the right choice. I’m still learning a lot about lawn care from you and trying not to sit throw stuff down but understanding the pros and cons of the active ingredients in these products.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      2.5% urea is pretty low. Important thing to remember about urea is it needs to be watered in good otherwise nitrogen will be lost to the atmosphere. It also needs soil biology to break it down although it's much easier and faster for this to happen that the breakdown of organics. I'd have to look the label up to know what else is in it though - knowing ingredients is key to understanding how different products work.

      Thanks; I've watched it over a couple of times since it went live and I wish I could hit an edit button on the upload, there's a couple small things in there that I misspoke; that's always the risk of just filming live off the top of your head. Still I think the meat of the lesson came through well enough. I appreciate your comments and feedback! I'll try to break down some of the other forms of nitrogen later in the season because you are right, yardowners should know which source to use at different times of the year or for different purposes.

    Hello man, I’m in central Texas first time home owner and got a soil test done, all my NPK are low and micronutrients too. I went to my local landscaping supply store asked the worker what fertilizer he would recommend for my low NPK. He sold me a 21-7-14 25% polymer coated urea fertilizer. I was recommended by my soil test a 12-12-12 idk if what he recommended was a good fit. I never heard about polymer coated urea it makes me nervous. Also I can’t find anywhere only what’s the application rate on my 50lb bag. I am Learning a lot from your video. But what do you think should I keep it or change to a different fertilizer. Thanks an advance for the help.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว

      What he sold you will be fine for a first application. Coated urea just slows the nitrogen down a bit so it doesn't get used all at once. Considering you are in central TX your soil temps are probably just about right (50+ degrees) to apply especially after the warming you've felt just this week. Just wait ubtil your main lawn grass is starting to come out of dormancy to apply. For minors assuming you are sticking with granular stuff I like the Southern Ag Minors which you can buy online amzn.to/3xFaf2U - anything you find locally like this would work too but you dont usually see minors locally very often in my experience.

    • @gustavomarcapura9204
      @gustavomarcapura9204 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok thanks for the quick response, I will definitely fallow your recommendation man. I can’t find anywhere only the application rates on this fertilizer. What rates do you think would be ok so I don’t over spread my lawn and burn it? The closest I found to it was the Anderson 21-7-14 fertilizer their application rates are
      Low 3.75lb for 1k
      High 5lb for 1k
      Would you agree with those number?

    • @gustavomarcapura9204
      @gustavomarcapura9204 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I’m going to use this as my firs application of the season could I also use it for my last? Since is high Nitrogen and is slow release?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gustavomarcapura9204 at 21% n, a single pound of the stuff in the bag contains .21 pounds of N. Early season you don't need much n especially since you probably have a warm season grass like st Aug or bermuda. I personally wouldn't put more than 1.5lbs per 1000 Sq ft this early but then 4 weeks later or so I would consider putting another 2-3 pounds per 1k down. As you get closer to summer the rate can be higher as warm season grasses want the long hot days. Hope that helps!

      Pretty cool compliment there David! Funny, I didnt enjoy chemistry in college nor did I enjoy biology...wasn't until after I went on to business school and got really into research, that just dovetailed into my love for tending to the lawn and the garden. I still read a lot of highly complex university and government research reports about this stuff to continually gain a better understanding of whatever topic I feel the need to know more about. Reading this week was from the nih on behavior of different types of fungi in cold / polar conditions. I'm going deep! 😁

  • @moesawad
    @moesawad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Because it needs to be broken down, people are using it right before winter so the lawn can have it in the spring when temps start to moving up. What is your opinion on this?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to agree with the but a lot is lost during that waiting period to the atmosphere and to the deeper soil zones or ground water. I've got a winterizer video coming out soon where I go into it in more depth but urea down to 45 to 50 usually works if not applied to heavily, for a last growth push just before grass goes dormant a touch of synthetics can be used as it is already plant available and doesn't need microbial activity to be used by plants. What ill be doing this year though is adding a plant source of N to the lawn because it won't be lost to the environment like urea and the soils fungal networks can break it down in cold weather and store it in the soil better that urea for use in early spring. Those plant sources of N usually trigger greater soil biology in the spring to so it's a double whammy of goodness imo.

      Soo much to say about starting a channel. You should spend a bit watching the first vids I made in April 2020, I think about taking them down every day because they are so rough, lol 😂 if you want to do it then it can help to just practice making vids and put them out there no matter how bad they are. A good way to start is to do a whole bunch of vids on a very small aspect of lawn, for instance some of my earliest views were a series of videos in April and June 2020 about thatch rakes. Small view count overall but it got me started with regular views and confidence.
