    A highly imaginative, stylistically persuasive transcription deserving of wide performance. With Alina in rapturous, spiritual form, and an ensemble of such finely distinguished and responsive players, this is a performance not to be missed ...

      Thank you Shelley. We were very lucky with the amazing soloist Alina Pogostkina and the wonderful nonet players here. They knew they were debuting a "ground braking" arrangement and gave it their all.
      Aside from the actual production work I dedicated hours working as a tone master on the audio recording and post production. However, first and foremost I should thank my father, Mordechai Rechtman, who labored on the first draft of the arrangement for nearly 2 months. He unfortunately just died 2 weeks ago at the age of 97. Left lots of such amazing arrangements, many of which not even published yet. (However, more than 250 are published in various edition houses).

    Personally, I love this interpretation & performance. Purely a matter of taste, & deeper psychology, & classical heresy - I would be happy to hear 99% of 19th c. symphonies & concerti brought out in smaller ensembles such as this wonderful Rechtman Nonet. There is no "why," really, just a way to hear all the lines clearly interacting; & to feel, so to speak, invited into the composer's intention. Full orchestras, even solo beloved Steinway Grands, can have an effect of trying to overpower us (?). The 19th c., of course, had no amplified rock concerts, or even Big Band jazz, for popular "power" entertainment. Whatever we may understand of the triumphant force of Beethoven's mind, soul & supreme talent, would he really object to this fine 21st c. realization of his masterpiece?

    • @michaelbell8387
      @michaelbell8387 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think he would have minded. He himself made a number of self-arrangements: the Op. 14/1 E major Piano Sonata became a string quartet in F; the early but misnumbered Op. 103 Octet was reworked as the Op. 4 String Quintet; the Second Symphony was re-scored for piano trio, while the original Piano Trio Op. 1 No. 3 - one of his most radical youthful works - was re-created in middle age as another string quintet. He was possibly also aware of an arrangement by another hand of his Seventh Symphony for wind ensemble; a remarkably faithful reproduction in most respects, but one which curiously chooses to abridge the finale rather drastically (even more oddly, Richard Strauss - who appears in general to have been quite a stickler for musical fidelity - has been recorded conducting an orchestral performance of this curtailed version).
      My own Beethoven reduction vice is to bash merry hell out of the symphonies rather badly on the piano. The pianist Joanna MacGregor asserts that Beethoven was much more tolerant of wrong notes than of safe and soulless playing, and I like to think that he might take a similarly indulgent view of my own efforts!

    • @michaelbell8387
      @michaelbell8387 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PS) I don't know if the arranger of the Seventh is known, but the author of the following commentary alleges that the wind ensemble version was "probably approved by Beethoven in 1816".

    • @SimonPiano42
      @SimonPiano42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      probably coincidence. If you have an equal and random distribution of genders to seats, you will have women in the last seats by chance from time to time, as well as the other way round.
      There have fortunately been many women in leading positions in orchestras and ensembles for a long time.

      There are a lot of women in leadership positions in orchestras... Playing the viola or second violin as a female doesn't mean that they are less that the first violin or that they are not "capable to be in a leadership position" .. playing the second violin or viola is not sth that you do by chance sometimes you as a violinist decide to play the part of the 2nd or 1 at violin.. specially on an ensamble like this 🙂🙂
      Violas of course are playing their part the first viola is who plays alone sometimes... But in this case there are not "a leader" there are 9 musicians who play their part and all of them are "leaders"

    Exceptional soloist, but the arrangement for string nonet is flat and boring.
    Beethoven's music lives from the contrast between the different instrument families like woodwinds, brass and strings and their various groupings in different dynamic stages.
    I miss all of that here.
    A cello pizicatto instead of kettle drum beats is ridiculous.

    • @mariobeer4918
      @mariobeer4918 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd argue the opposite: by condensating all to the strings and forgoing the extra colors and timbres, the structure of the work is reduced to its essentials -- delightful like the beautiful solist in her light, free outfit instead of stuffy dresses. It is for people who, like yours truly, prefer a good drawing that clearly shows the essentials to a painting.
