  • I was the first person to open the shed door after 25 years and these cars had been sitting in the shed for 36 years. The owner had a heart attack in his lat 30's and couldn't use his left leg properly to operate the clutch pedal so he parked these Aussie Muscle Cars up and shut the shed door and went out and bought an automatic. The orange LC GTR XU1 is a rare " Bathurst version" which was release to the public for approximately 4.5 months in ate 1971 so General Motors could race them at Bathurst, 299 cars were made to meet CAMS requirements to race as a production car.

    My brother had an orange LC GRT XU1 - bought it new - paid cash - I think it came from Reeves Holden dealers in McLaren Vale SA - I was with him when he picked it - he lived in Adelaide and worked in Mt Gambier and used to come home on Friday nights for the weekend, he would disconnect the speedo cable to keep the odometer reading down for the 12 month warranty, Saturday nights he would let me take it out for drive to pick up munchies - 110MPH down Sturt Road at Brighton - 16 yr olds do crazy things.

    This takes me back many years, around 1975. I could have bought one of these. Very tidy unit that I believe had extra work done on motor. It run 20 miles Casino to Lismore in 12 minuits. Insurance was too expensive . Still wish I had bought it.
    I owned 2 EK, HT, HQ with 253, 4 speed box, and bucket seats, HQ Statesman, LJ torona, among many others over the years. I no longer am able to drive. Miss putting rubber on the road. HJ was ticked up, but standard was good for 179 km / hour. Absolute beast for 253

    Jesus, these are the condition of gold! Each would be worth over 200K each surely? How did you get them, that must be a good story in itself. While the orange girl is a rare bird, I disagree that the later model one should not be restored, I believe it should. Both are rare enough these days to warrant the work. They are originals!

    In 1977, I was 16 years old and working at a local garage pumping petrol. An XU-1, the first I'd seen up close came in. I had the owner pop the hood so I could check the oil, etc. I'd never seen under the hood of an XU-1 before. I saw three twin barrel carbs and just very loudly said ,"f**king hell!" ... the two guys in the car laughed for what seemed like forever! What a car this was. Even America had NOTHING like an XU-1

    The purple LJ looks like one I signed up for in 73. Then sanity prevailed and I managed to get out of it. Paint work on both quarters was see through, brand new on the yard.
    The LC is a c/r Aussie box. My old LC XU1 Sports Sedan was originally an Aussie box car. Car was first log booked in 1980,, would have been worth nothing with a minor hit in the back. Replacement quarter was an LJ one

    First was an LC 2850, pulled out to about 3 litres, the second was an LJ 3300.
    So much fun on every level. TBH, I liked the LC (triple SU, 38, 94, 127, 169 on the dyno) more than the LJ, it just felt better balanced, and less plastic.

    I used to work for a major Holden dealer in Perth W.A from early 1972 as a young bloke when the HQ’s and the LJ Toranas just came out and still had a handful of LC’s in our Holding yard and I remember fondly getting to drive just about everything and ferry them back to our dealership quite often to do pre delivery on them and I just loved driving all the XU-1’s when auto trans used to transport these over from the eastern states along with other Holdens like 350 Chev powered Monaros and Statesman De-Villes etc but I used to have my special route or the “Long Way” back to the dealer where I’d hang the trade plate on and let’s just say I would “Help” speed up the running in process before the lucky owner took delivery of them! And I do remember the Chateu Mauve colour on the LJ XU-1 and reckon it was one of the nicest colours on them but also remember March the 17th or St.Patrick’s day green looked good on them too, those days were extra good being able to fang the daylights out of brand new performance cars and sometimes felt a little bit sorry for the new owner if he knew how I treated his purchase but they could take it no worries!

    There will be plenty of barn/garage, etc finds in Australia for classic motors. If sheltered from the hot sun they should usually be in an OK condition. In Britain it's the damp that kills off a lot of classic car finds. In the US a bit of both.

    Our cars both developed structural rust in the left and right side front pillars at the base of the windscreen ! I was told by a panel beater it was not recoverable ~ ( which in hindsight was BS ~ maybe!) I fish oiled mine every 18 Months but never stuck the gun into the heater vent cavity ~ and the internal of the pillars.

    • @OzCrusader
      @OzCrusader ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing “normal” about it! It’s an Australian GM Holden developed by mechanical guru Harry Firth, seven bearing 202 CI “red” motor (originally a Chevy 132 CI way back in 1948). These things fanged around Mt Panorama Bathurst NSW at lightning speed, piloted by the legendary Peter Brock and Colin Bond, in the early 1970s, beating all the US developed 350 V8s. The Holden 202 wth triple Webbers was a giant killer. Then in 2002 came along the Ford Australia straight 6 Barra 245 CI 4.0 litre, which was so strong that it can easily push 1,000 BHP monstrous great turbochargers bolted to them. What Aussies can do with straight sixes is amazing!

    It's so funny looking back to the days when these and most like it were considered shit boxes and nobody batted an eyelid. Now look at everyone, falling over themselves and some who would even sell their mothers to have the chance to own one. Greed is always the best motivator I guess.

    It’s called a barn in the US. It’s a shed find in Australia. Like a commodore in Australia getting a Chevy badge bits still a commodore. Anyway a thumbs down 👎

      Cheers for the thumbs down. The rest of the world knows it as a barn and TH-cam is global, this attracts more viewers and in turn helps up pay bills to produce more content…great feedback though.
