The spy octo must have seemed so badass to the real one. It just handed over its coconut shell to one in need, bravely faced the sharks and sent them packing. I think I would be in awe too if someone gave me their suit of armor, went to fight a horde of dragons and came back completely unharmed.

"Was once told at an aquarium that octopus are not only highly intelligent and sensitive creatures; they're also capable to picking their people- That is who they will and will not interact with. In some cases becoming so emotionally attached to a person that when that person is absent, the octopus will stop feeding and display what we could describe as grief.
Then when 'their person' returns, the octopus will greet them and seemingly check them all over. Maybe looking to see if the person is alright."

I think the way we perceive this is linked to how smart we see the octopus. The researchers to me seem to be saying they know the octopus knows this robot isn’t an octopus- but that it does know this object is somehow sentient and able to communicate. So perhaps the octopus knew the coconut was for it, the robot did bring it over. A normal octopus probably would have hunkered down with it. Not worn it like a hat all the way over to the other octopus. Then they said that behavior is seen with octopuses friends, so maybe not a hug, but it knows the robot helped.
