I interpret Violet as metaphorical. Allegedly, Ren wrote the first two tales based on an actual incident of a young boy killing a young girl and then getting shot. In the real case (if this story is true), it's unlikely they were related. But they were likely both children of generational trauma.

A subtle but powerful line that hits is "turning to the doctor Violet broke her silence and she cried if I'm to die, please let my babies stay alive". The whole way through the song she's silent right through the worst moments of her life until literally no one left is able to speak up for her and she breaks the silence. This reaction was awesome and picked up on the ending bombshell beautifully 👌

Ren wrote Jenny’s tale after reading a newspaper article about a teenage streetwalker who was killed. The line “it’s such a shame” was in the article and Ren felt it was such an inadequate response to the situation. I think the others just grew out of Jenny’s tale.

Yes, consider that Screech is 14 yrs old. Well, so is Jenny. And, in high-heeled shoes, walking the same path late at night. Knowing Violet's story helps us understand how both Screech and Jenny each had unsavory youths. It is such a shame.

This is such an insightful reaction. Ive been a 911 dispatcher for almost 20 years. Long enough to see (hear) generational violence. I'm also a domestic violence survivor and because Ren was so spot on with the realism of this, I worried about him. "Do you think I want to do this Violet?" Is a statement that comes out of many domestic abusers. My hope is that someone that is an abuser see's this video and now knows how appalling it is. I also hope that someone that is going through domestic violence can see how they need to get out of the situation before it's to late. Im so glad that shortly after I discovered The Tales of Jenny and Screech I also found Ren's 1 million subscribers video that showed the caring person that he is. If you haven't seen that I highly recommend it ❤❤

  • @jeffwilson3205
    @jeffwilson3205 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +290

You said it all. To Ren’s motivation for doing this, he said that it’s too easy for people to turn away from situations like this…he wants people to confront the harsh reality of intergenerational violence. It’s not easy to watch, and Ren said it’s not easy for him to perform. You reacted to the moment at the beginning of Violet’s tale where Ren the artist has to pause and gather himself so that he could perform the song. In the old tradition of Bards, that’s called putting on the Minstrel’s Mask in preparation for telling a horrible story. He said it takes a piece of him as well.
This song makes me 100% want to see a Screech and help him, or find a Jenny or Violet and help them find their voice (I have 2 teenage daughters). So mission accomplished.
Think of what a great writer and storyteller you’d have to be to create this song and not have it come off as exploitative…he was so careful about so many details…but one that really stood out to me was that he never put himself in the first person “shoes” of Jenny and Violet…and only told their story through narration, while he did assume the roles of Screech and Stevie, because he actually can understand their lived experience.
This guy is doing art, music, filmmaking, snd storytelling at a completely different level.
Also, you may enjoy knowing that he actually appears to be a sweet goofball in real life…but he’s lived through such heaviness that he just seems to have a different level of power.

I feel so conflicted by this piece because I think it is arguably Ren's strongest performance, even better than Hi Ren. However, because of the somber tone of the piece and the absolutely visceral reaction that Ren is able to evoke in people, I've had to caution several friends about watching it, because i know their past and they may see the video as just a chain of triggers for previous trauma. Ren really sets himself into the master storyteller class with this. His compelling playing and singing draws the audience in so well, they forget the entire piece is called The tale of Jenny and Screech, and when Violet's tale starts, we viewers are too deep into the story to pull back and think how Violet might relate to Jenny and Screech. The ending is an emotional gut punch that hits like a freight train. Excellent reaction, especially going through generational violence.

@@Hoop_23 true, originally they were released separately, however once Violet's tale was released, it changes the narrative in very powerful ways. Ren knew this, and released the trilogy together in one video because of it. The revelation at the end changes up everything and injects empathy into the flood of emotions experienced through Violet's Tale. Violet's Tale is so powerful that many people that dont have Jenny and Screech's Tale fresh in their minds miss the end completely, and are just left with the horror of Violet's Tale. There's reason why Ren marked the Trilogy altogether as the Official Music Video. Respectfully. 🤓

as a follower of ren's music, i have watched so many people react to the tale of jenny and screech. but i feel like with your psychoanalysis and how you are able to analyze the thought pattern of the music and the videography rather than just the lyrics, i feel like you are one of few reactors who have been able to fully appreciate and understand all ren's ideas and the effort he put into making all the different emotions and metaphors come to life.

Do people that do terrible things deserve forgiveness? Maybe, maybe not. Do they deserve some understanding if that person has been broken from an early age? Possibly.
    Its a difficult subject.

Ren fans are like you family members. You love them to death but cannot rid yourself of them. Ren we love and hope lives FOREVER! Very few have noted his line about Stevie when Ren says, "Violet! Do you think I want to do this?" This is the perp blaming the victem in real time and quite disturbing. There is the ever present layer of GUILT by those in Power or who bully or commit crimes of passion, anger or what not. By the way, Jenny was presumably into prosititution. The clues are obvious once you think about it. Walking the same street 1000 times before late at night. Rosie Cheeks. High heel shoes. Next, I suspect Screech's girlfriend was actually with Patrick at the time he called her on the phone. Hence, neither one was going to answer him.

Patrick and Screech’s girlfriend were together, probably at Patrick’s place (good thing Screech didn’t get in because there would have been more murders).
Ren filmed a whole series of Instagram stories leading up to the release of Screech’s tale where he (Ren) pretended someone stole his phone, and screech started posting from it. You got to see how poorly he treated Patrick and his girlfriend, but also a disturbing interaction with his father. Somebody compiled them into a single video and posted them here on TH-cam…you’re not a real ren completist (lunatic) if you have dug that video up and watched it. 🤣
EDIT: search TH-cam for: Ren - Screech's Tale Instagram Stories

Jenny is said to "walk the streets". She's what used to be called a street-walker. If she was just walking, an English speaker would say "walk down the street" or "walk up the street". But anyway, she walked the streets in high-heel shoes like she did a thousand times before.

Ren is a modern day bard painting such vivid imagery with his storytelling that it pulls you in and forces you to keep watching - even when it gets physically uncomfortable during Violet’s Tale. And Ren uses this ability to shed light on far too real issues in the world. Ren is special.
Great reaction. I’m so glad you listened (even if some people didn’t ask very nicely) and did the full trilogy and went it blind for the last two. Not just for the reaction we get to see, but for yourself. This is just such a masterpiece in storytelling.
Now you get to wait in eager anticipation with the rest of us, cause Ren has said that he and his cinematographer Sam have plans to film a pilot to pitch to Netflix when Ren has finished treatments in Canada and moves back to the UK. All we know is that it will be in the same raw style as this trilogy, but that is enough for me to say that if Netflix doesn’t give Ren his own show, they are fools 😂

My own personal headcannon (which is in no way confirmed by Ren) is that Richard the officer was also the first responder for Violet before she got to the hospital. There's no mention of it at all, just a thought that I had that compliments the full-circle nature of the Trilogy.

There are so many layers to this. When he says 'its such a shame' i beleive its a comentary on how us as a society reacts to these situations. We read these stories every day, they're broadcast to us on the news, documentaries, tictok crime content. And we all gloss over to some extent or another. With the phrase 'its such a shame' or some iteration of. Even it not in the moments afterwards, its our conclusions we make to be able to carry on with our lives without it affecring us emotionally. Ren, I beleive is highlighting this. The societal need to diminish its impacts whislt holding up a mirror and making us face it.

Looking at these songs with your psychology knowledge makes me see how much worse my home situation is. I am working on myself to break the cycle, but it is tough. Even tho i am a man i am more like jenny, i bottle things up and don't talk but doing better now than 1 year ago (and way better than 6 years ago when the issues with my mental health started to become clear to me). I've used a lot of coping mechanisms to deal with my issues and all were not per se wrong if i would have done them in moderate amounts (Drugs, Gaming, exercise and helping other to feel better myself), but i now know i should have talked about them cuz i was just pushing them away. Now i've started accepting myself more and i've found out i very likely have adhd and autism and i plan on getting that tested and get a diagnosis so i can become a functioning member in society, cuz in my current state, with the chaos that is in my head, i am barely functional. Like i do work and study but i feel like the way this world is designed isn't for me which makes it difficult to be part of society. I am still a student (doing a work-learning process) and if i don't get things sorted i feel like i might fail my final year. The thing which for me works now is taking microdoses of speed (30mg works best i figured out by trial and error) but i don't do that when i am at work cuz i don't even wanna know what would happen if they would find out that i was on drugs at work. This is what motivated me the most to go and get an adhd diagnosis but the waiting list is so long that i'm not likely to have a diagnosis before the end of my schoolyear.
Thing is that cuz of all these issues i always get told i'm mature for my age but that is just cuz i've gone trough more shit than someone my age should go and i am still on the edge of the path (as in not stray from it) and i've sort of raised myself and helped my sister do the same. This made me a very mature person once i realized i was coping wrong with my issues, cuz drugs weren't the answer (besides microdosing the speed i do now on some days), playing videogames all day wasn't the answer, exercising 10+ trainings a week wasn't the answer and neither was stuffing my things down and help others. The answer was looking at what i need and talk about the things i am struggling with.

I always love Ren's guitar work, but never more so than in the intro to Screech's tale. The first part is slower and contemplative - as though Screech is in shock, thinking about what he's done. Then we have the faster part, which instantly makes me think of Screech fleeing from the scene of the crime, running until he's worn out and breathless. Setting the scene through music, without a single word.

I am a licensed foster parent and have taken courses on trauma based care, and ACEs is a huge part of what’s discussed. Your perspective on these three videos is different than any reaction I have seen so far, because you are literally explaining trauma from a therapist perspective and how these adverse experiences can completely mold the person forever. I have also learned through TBRI (trust based relational intervention) that trauma physically changes the make up of a person’s brain. It’s very hard to reverse the behaviors that come from these changes and the physical look of the brain mostly stays the same. It takes a very long time and consistency to get the trust of someone who has been traumatized this severely.
Thanks for all the insight you offer. It’s a breath of fresh air to get this kind of conversation.

31:41 No, the first time i heard screeches tale i understood him. Even as i hated him. Theres no excuse for what he did, there are however, explanations. And if you can understand WHY someone did something, well then, maybe you can prevent it in the future. And to be clear, i hate screech as much, or more than, i hate myself. But i do UNDERSTAND him. You dont have to agree with why someone acted HOW they did to understand WHY they acted like they did.
