This is great stuff, Coach! Jay Wright's offense is a beautiful thing to watch, built on executing simple principles really well. You do a great job of breaking down the key components so that HS and MS coaches can successfully introduce this offense to their players. For what it's worth: All MS and HS coaches should be running some kind of Motion offense that puts the decision-making onus on players. Teach the fundamentals like spacing, ball-movement, ball screens, motion after a pass, etc., then get out of the way and let the players start to develop a feel for the game and the fundamental skills needed to succeed.
Roll & Replace with bigs is a very clever way to pull away the help big defense.. as well as get open looks at the top if they collapse. Thanks for sharing this.
These extended cuts are always fun to watch. I usually get caught up on the defensive positionings though. Some of these teams have a bad habit with ball-watching lol
The “wings” in most 4-out offenses are positioned at the free throw line extended (or just below), not the corners. You save the corner space for off ball circle movement, baseline drives, post pass and cut, creating a double gap for outside ball screens. You see this throughout the whole video.
I'm coaching 2/3 grade boys this year and we are doing a read and react system with 4 and 1 setup. A lot of this is above there skill level, but how you have it broken down with all the nuance with lots of examples is just great. Lets me pick and chose but also understand what is going on. Too many videos are coaches talking for way way too long and not enough video of the action. This breakdown of game film is excellent.
2 and 3rd graders need to enjoy and develop a love for the game. Without that they'll never play long enough to actually apply the semi-advanced teachings you're talking about. The best coaches will tell you, those with a deep love for the game never have to be told how to try and get better. At least wait until grade 5/6.
I run this at the middle school level and I get nothing but layups and corner 3's. I combined this with the Michigan State Numbered Fast Break. at the 7th and 8th grade level we averaged just under 60 PPG.
You could also take the same approach if you have a team with big men. You could combine the Kansas Jayhawks High Low and the North Carolina Secondary Break.
Hi, My brother and I are going to be Coaching a AAU team of 9 - 11 boys this year and we are trying to figure out a way to make the Villanova offense affective in terms of, teaching them in a drill that they would enjoy and want to learn. Any ideas of how to execute this? We were thinking, if they do not do it right the shot does not count which making it a competition drill. What are your thoughts? Look forward to your response. Thanks, Chad
When they run the Roll and Replace the 4 and 5 work to stay opposite and that principle is mention quite a bit in some of the other resources on Jay Wright's 4 out 1 in Motion Offense. But what is the action for the 4 when the slot or side screens are taking place? Are they still working to stay opposite or does the 4 just stay more on the perimeter?
He stays more on the perimeter…It goes back to the “regular” 4 out 1 in…He’ll just interchange with the person on the opposite slot from the ball…That slot can screen down for the 4 or the 4 can even set a flair screen for that player…You can damn near run anything into this offense…Horns into a 4 out etc…We ran this in college but your players have to be really fundamentally sound and good at driving the ball…Not to mention your big will love getting free points off the penetration and the side pick and roll lol
He does. I saw an interview with Wright where he was asked that exact question. He teaches his players to read the zone. They will still run the 4 out, but will look to modify their cuts, attacks, etc. in order to best beat the zone.
As far as I know, he's basically always run some variation of this same offense (at least since he's been at Nova). Go watch some film on the team with Kyle Lowry. They were scary...
Could you please address the issue of offensive rebounding while running this offense? It looks like Villanova send 1 of the guys to crash the boards (on the shot) while the other 3 get back on defense. is this correct? I tried this offense and we were 1 and done too many times.

7 years since you posted this video, your work still has a positive impact.

This is great - now I just need players that shoot like that ;)

Yep
Great stuff! Especially breaking down the ball screen actions they use. Using this year to try and help create more for our guards out of 4 out 1 in.

jared Earle You must have some skilled guards...Y’all were hoopin!!
Would you say you have above average players? Could not see my middle schoolers getting this completely down.
@@michaelflipse113 if they truly want to be there and learn the game then they should have no problem learning this.
Fantastic breakdown. Thank you.
D Ham made me here!
Just like Coach Dale said it in Hoosiers, hit the open man
Coaches to his team's strength, since he usually has the smallest team in matchups. Genius!!!!
can you recommande some pdf file about offense principles , like spacing and player movement, ball movement.

Thx for the vid!
Love it
My favorite offense, if I coached this is what I’m running.
Coach wright, my guy.
Should the 5 post player typically try and be weak side block? Or do they have freedom to move around the paint?
i run this motion in 2k
lmao 😂

We working on this today
excellent!
If Jay Wright plays with 4 guards does he still designate one to be the 4?

Great video. Does he run this same offense against zones?
He does. I saw an interview with Wright where he was asked that exact question. He teaches his players to read the zone. They will still run the 4 out, but will look to modify their cuts, attacks, etc. in order to best beat the zone.
Does Coach Wright still use this offense. Or does he change his sets to fit the abilities of the players he brings in?
As far as I know, he's basically always run some variation of this same offense (at least since he's been at Nova). Go watch some film on the team with Kyle Lowry. They were scary...
Still runs this offense
Roll & Replace exposes ball watcher off-ball.. Great detailed video .

They set the ball screen after a slot to slot pass
