    In this video you'll learn the basic set up and movement patterns for the 4-out, 1-in offense. You'll learn the basics of pass, fill, cut, some backdoor options and a few basic scoring options you can run from the pattern. The 4-Out, 1-In offense is a read and react offense typically run against a man-to-man or matchup defense. I don't recommend running this offense against a zone defense or against a team that plays good help matchup defense.
    The 4-Out, 1-In offense is easy to teach and learn. Young teams can run this offense effectively and it can grow in complexity as team gain skills and experience. Teams that have at least one player who can beat their defender off the dribble and get to the rim will have greater success. This offense is only complimented if you also have a great post player who can read what's going on in the game and react accordingly. There are so many options available from the basic pass, cut, fill pattern.
    This offense doesn't take long to learn, but there's a lot that can be added to it as your team learns each others tendencies on the court. Coaches, because this is a read and react offense, trust your players to make decisions on the court. Don't over-coach your players in this offense. They will make mistakes, but that's often the best and only way to learn. Encourage them to play to their strengths and recognize the strengths in their teammates.
    Once your team learns the 4-Out, 1-In Offense, it's great fun to execute and watch the creativity of your players emerge. Even if you don't plan on running this offense, it's good to know how it works in case you come against it. Chances are pretty good that you will eventually.
    Coaches should and do change their defensive strategies to counter your offensive tactics during a game. Many times, an opposing coach will change their defensive strategy to employ zone defense. In that case, you'll need to change your offensive strategy.
    Learn and keep this offensive strategy in your arsenal so you can force your opponent to change up their defensive tactics!
    This offense against a man-to-man defense and is great for teaching youth, club teams, junior high, high school, and recreational teams.
    If you have recorded video of your team executing this play or any of the plays you've learned from my channel and would like for me to do a TH-cam video review of your team executing the play, please email me at:

    A 4-1 is absolutely effective against a 2-3 zone- or any zone for that matter! Good luck coaches!

    Best with your Power Forward uptop in a slot position for Guard-to-Guard Pass over the top. Hi-Lo floor spacing.

    Thanks for this coach! Coaching U12 Girls Rep and needed something really simple so they can understand offense concepts. ALSO... in this age group, we're not allowed to play zone. So happy as a clam!

    With respect to handoffs and plays involving post isnt paint already clogged?? I mean help is easy isnt?? I want more on both the defense help for 4-1 offence and post play as continuity to this offense!! Good job Coach!!

    Great video! do you have any suggestions or videos on how to practice 4 out 1 in? and drills to run in practice?

    • @CoachRuss
      @CoachRuss  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you 🙏🏼 this offense is really centered around beating your defender off the dribble and getting to the basket and creating your own shot. I would focus on 1-on-1 drills with limited time or dribbles, and then for more advanced players 2-on-1 drills (2 defenders), same concept. I hope that helps.

      Not to speak for Coach Russ but from what I've seen with our players they need to focus more on cutting and receiving or passing the ball immediately. Sometimes I've seen it where all they do is dribble after the pass and never passing to the cutter. Coach Russ mentioned against good help defenses then driving to the basketball wont work, rather slot and wing players will need to raise ball awareness and find the open spots. Drills focusing on those skills as well should be beneficial.

    I'm 18 playing organized basketball for the first time. My skills are pretty good because I've been playing in recs for years now all but we never run plays and my athleticism has carried me. All this is a little confusing to me do you think I'll get the hang of it soon?

      If you're passionate about something, I don't think there's anything that can prevent a passionate and determined person from learning anything.

    Problem with youth bball is the most kids will see that the post player got the ball and they will all cut...there needs to be straightforward rules...like passer cuts or gets the hand off...nit just anybody

      Indeed. Patience is definitely something that grows with age and experience. In life and in basketball.

    What's been your experience with a young team learning these concepts? How long before it clicked? I'm going to use this but unfortunately only have limited practice time (1 hour per week).

    • @CoachRuss
      @CoachRuss  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Coach, I know the struggles of limited practice time. It’s really tough. So much you want to go over and so little time. I can’t recall how long it took for teams to grasp this concept, but if I had a young and very in experienced team and limited practice time, this is what I would run. I’ve seen teams be successful with this offense with only one person who could get to the rim and beat their defender off the dribble. The tough part would be to get your team onboard with letting the players who can dribble/score take most of the shots. I hope that helps coach.

    What are the drawbacks to running this against a 2-3 zone?

    • @CoachRuss
      @CoachRuss  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You won’t get the same 1-on-1 drives to the basket (with the opportunity to score if you beat the defender off the dribble) like you would against a man-to-man.
