I took up guitar again 45 years after just beginning to learn. I lost my ability to sing because of lung disease and really grieved that loss. Playing guitar has become my “down time” activity. It is sometimes difficult to motivate myself to start, but when I do, I always end up playing longer than I intended. I really enjoy whatever progress I make, however small. That propels me forward. I have made so much more progress than I could have imagined in the past year, just by playing for my own pleasure. I never set a timer for how long to play. No pressure, no expectation. Just playing for the love of learning and the joy of making music.

I share similar ‘obstacle’ as yours in that I hv problem with holding my breath. However, it has not deterred me in my guitar learning. I just love playing though I’m no way near being average. In fact, I even started learning the Banjo as soon as lockdown was declared in my country in 2020. Still enjoying it. Anyway I play by ear. Can’t follow tabs at 59. Let’s just enjoy the music we play.

Sorry to hear about that, brethren. When I hear stories like this it reminds me of all the things I take for granted. I just stopped smoking a few days ago after 15 years to help my voice get better. This comment makes it that much easier not to give into the cravings. I’ve got some other hurdles I need to get over but the worst is definitely behind me. I’m glad to hear that you’ve picked up the guitar again. I never quit but I def didn’t practice or even compose for a good amount of years, just kinda doodled mindlessly for a good 5 years. Got serious again about it a little over 2 years ago and have made strides. Even started writing my own songs which have turned out pretty good. Hope you’re still playing and enjoy it the ways you used to, brethren.

@@louieo.blevinsmusic4197 I’m so pleased to hear that you are inspired by my experience. Quitting smoking is hard. I quit 34 years before being dx’d with IPF. Smoking may not have caused the disease, but undoubtedly was a contributing factor. I am still playing guitar and am focusing on honing my transcription skills. I don’t always play daily, but do play often enough that I remember where I left off on the piece I was transcribing. That’s progress in my book. Keep on playing and writing for the joy of it; and thank you so much for sharing!

I’m a pretty new member of Acoustic Life and it’s definitely a nice place to come too each day with the daily exercises. Although I’ve missed so many of these shows I have watched them since the beginning of 2020 and I’m looking forward to the next 200 as well 🤙
    Thanks Tony.

Congrats Tony. I'm so glad you are on you tube. I couldn't get on the 30 day challenge. I bought a book in which I look up guitar chords and write them down. I sing along as I'm writing. I just purchased a Martin jr. My Yamaha was hurting my shoulder. I play Marty every day for an hour. I play everymorning.

    Congrats on episode no. 200.
Get your guitar professionally set up for you. Ask the Luther what they did of anything. It's your instrument, know everything you can about it and take an interest in it.
Change the strings yourself as regularly as you can. It's not that hard to do. And it means you'll learn more about your instrument.
It's like the basics of owning a car. You should know how to check the tyre pressure, use a dipstick to check the oil, find out what all the knobs and buttons do, and what all the lights mean.
Consistency is the key also. Don't be a butterfly and move from flower to flower. If you get a teacher stick with them for a while. At least a month.
If you like a youtube guitar channel or book stick with it for at least a month. As time goes on you'll learn what works best for you but at first realise you know nothing and you need help.
"You'll get more results from a mediocre workout plan executed with
consistency than with the best plan in the world executed poorly.

Jeremy Shepherd just made an interesting video talking about buying old and new guitars. Some folk apparently buy a 1970s D-28 and expect it to sound as good as, or even better than, a 2021 model. - So my question is: what are the pitfalls of buying a 1970s guitar, beyond the most obvious structural/cracks/dings issues? I talking about sound and playing problems.

Is it a mistake that I seem to learn backward? I mean Scales Modes and solos come rather easy but, Strumming simple cowboy chords songs do not. It's like having to do it wrong to get it right in the end.

Great video. The playing time thing is big for me. I can usually manage to play 5 days a week, sometimes 10-15 minutes. It is funny how it works, you struggle with the same thing over and over and then one day you grab your guitar and you just can. It is so rewarding. Your videos and lessons are great! Congratulations on 200 episodes.

Pretty much the theme I'm seeing from every guitar TH-camr, is that when it's not fun to play, and it becomes a chore, that's what kills it for most adult beginners. And those expectations are what lead up to that... "I didn't get here in this amount of time, so it must not be for me" and then they give up.

cheers to 200, tony! this was a really good one. you totally nailed it. for me, youtube is both a blessing and a curse. completely overwhelming and oppressive with millions of videos making me feel dense and slow. it wasn't until i slammed on the brakes and realized that small steps are the only way to improve/learn that i actually started to learn. this meant narrowing down the instructors i felt spoke to me, and starting - and staying, at "step one" for a while. it's the only way. thank you for this video - you put into words all the things i have felt for a long time.

Expectations! I have been beating myself for 30 years because I still do not know music theory xyz or I do not pick exactly like so and so. Well sometimes I have not memorized a certain part of theory because I either have not needed it yet, or maybe was not ready for it yet. I can't play in the style of so and so because I am not so and so. I play like Minton Miller and most players do not play exactly life me.

Congrats on show 200 Tony “wise words”, I was always a 10minute practise player and 7yrs down the road I can’t believe how much my practise has improved. Not only has pentatonic, and major scale become an addition too my skill set but the bond between me and Faith (My guitar) has grown and I think she has saved me from the frustration of learning and playing new tunes. I would also add that learning to play with others is essential and my next goal. Keep doing what your doing Tony 🎉🥳

Back in '70 I was a mailman for a couple of years, get up at an ungodly hour in the morning but finished by 1pm.So all afternoon and all evening up to 10.30 pm with a break for dinner around 6 pm I just played guitar.I don't think I would have learned how to recognise chords by ear with a 10 minute a day routine and the same goes for fingerstyle playing.I now have essential tremor pretty badly and I'm waiting for ultrasonic treatment for it.........................

Congratulations, Tony on the 200th show.I have been there since number one and have thoroughly enjoyed every one. I understand the problems with losing your fretting hand (being left handed)as when I was suffering my stroke last March, I found I couldn't make a simple E chord. My right side was having problems with my face as well. My hand and arm still a little weak, but I just played a 3 song at a local festival a couple of weeks ago. The Doctors seemed very happy with my recovery and so am I.

Great show. I've made every mistake you shared and more. My medical issue was that I had to remove my fake fingernails because nail fungus started growing under them. So, I started practicing using finger picks until I can put the fake nails back on, (in a week or so). I might as well work on playing "dobro" since I'm using the finger picks anyway. A big win out of a small loss!

I would add another "mistake"...keeping your guitar(s) in their case(s). Sure, I know, the case is the safest place for a guitar. So let's put it in the case, then an outer, hermetically sealed case, then in a vault, bury the vault in the back yard, and cover it with a hefty layer of cement. Now it's "safe" as all get out! I have at least one guitar (three in my office) out and on a stand (or on a wall hanger) in every living space in my home, and the result is that I practice/play for that 10 minutes you mentioned AT LEAST 10 TIMES A DAY! If you have it out and available, you will play it. If you have to dig it out of the closet, excavate it from the case, get set up, and then have to reverse that process at the end of your session...well, there went your 10 minutes down the drain. And yes, I carefully monitor and control the humidity/heat levels in the home to protect them from climate issues. The point is a guitar does NOT belong in it's case...it belongs in your hands. By the way, as a result of this I have become the world's okayest guitarist! Got the t shirt to prove it!
