  • A attempt to create a custom water cooling loop using the pump and radiator from a Corsair Hydro H50-1.
    When my Corsair H50-1 stopped preforming, I decided to replace and tubes and coolant. I documented the experience.

    I just bought exactly that same reservoir from China to mod an old Corsair AIO. Glad to see it works just fine. This is a low cost way to recycle a perfectly good AIO pump head for use in an expanded customized system. You can easily run two radiators this way tied to a single reservoir. Many older PC cases don't allow for the newer 240/280 or 360MM radiators. In my case, I can fit a 120MM on the back of my PC case and 140MM up front for 260MM of cooling that I couldn't otherwise fit without a buying a new case.

      is it do able? i have 120 AIO that my plan is to mod it to open loop by adding a water reservoir and change to 240mm radiator

    • @bluethumbdiy4735
      @bluethumbdiy4735 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hendrasiswanto805 That should be no issue at all. 120 vs 240mm AIOs use the same pump head, only difference is the radiator. The most difficult part is getting the flow started, the loop completely full, and all the air out. I've found the easiest way to do this is to connect everything, fill the reservoir, and hold it above the pump head, using gravity to help the suction side get things going. Once you have good flow, you can put everything where it belongs in the case and add more water to the reservior as needed.

    • @hendrasiswanto805
      @hendrasiswanto805 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bluethumbdiy4735 hi I have minor problem, my open loop is in reverse. when my pump suck directly from radiator and dump hot water to reservoir it has no problem, but when it suck from reservoir it don't flow fastly and make my CPU overheating and force shutdown. is it ok to reverse water flow that suck directly from radiator like that?

    • @bluethumbdiy4735
      @bluethumbdiy4735 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hendrasiswanto805 It doesn't matter how the water goes through the radiator as long as long as you get good flow. If your water is overheating, and you have a good flow rate, then you don't have correct airflow across the radiator. Sometimes AIOs don't have enough power to flow correctly, which could be an issue.

    By undoing the screw between the two nipples in the pump module, the nipples can be easily pulled out. They have two o-rings each.
    No need to fiddle around with the knife or any other tools on/in the pump module.

    For those wondering, the Water cooler has a mix of Propylene Glycol and distilled water (battery water). The Propylene Glycol serves two purposes, to prevent freezing in transport and to act as a biocide (to kill agile).
    You CAN use Ethylene Glycol (antifreeze) in the same ratio (usually 1part EG to 10 parts water), however remember Ethylene Glycol is deadly toxic (unlike Propylene) if ingested enough, not recommended especially if you have pets (when kept undiluted).

    Thanks mate had the exact same idea as you I upgraded from a kuler 620 to a h100i gtx after a long time using my kuler, left it in a box in my garage for a long time decided to upgrade my GPU with the nxzt adapter as I'm using a reference gtx 1080 the temps are pretty bad, but my kuler had managed to get a blockage in the barb of the rad cleaned that out and did the same thing you did, would've just gone out and got a new one without this vid giving me some confidence in doing this

    Hmm, cool video, but i have a feeling that either the pump will fail in a short amount of time or it just wont be powerful enough to push that much water. I mean its only a pump for a 120mm rad and a slim one at that, so I don't think it will be that effective at pumping all that water.

    Hello, how is you H50 story ended up, is it working properly?
    One tiny note: sometimes over time water block internal structure becomes clogged with slush, which prevents it from working properly. It might be liquid components decomposition or may be oxidation.

      His intentions were not to "increase" his cooling ability, but to fix what was not working properly. He noticed it wasnt cooling even remotely like it should, and you should NEVER almost "burn" yourself when you touch your hoses. I've had my H50 for close to 7~ years, never had an issue, for the first 6 I never even touch or removed it. But never once have I even been uneasy about the temp. of the hoses or anything.
      Other than for the fixing aspect, I also enjoyed this, wondering (why not right) if and how you would turn a All-in-One cooler into a "custom" loop look, clear hoses, florencent or UV lighting on some good colors of coolant would be nice.
      Im actually REALLY considering doing this just for the Custom Loop look. Some blue coolant would complement.
      Makes me wonder if I could incorporate hard lines into it.
      We all know its probably easier and "ALMOST" cheaper to just buy a cheap kit. BUT SCREW THAT, I have a perfectly good Corsair pump i've trusted for a long time. Why not use what works. And make it cooler looking. :)
      Not bagging on you at all. Just saying.
