    I find it interesting and cool to see that there could be on physical media that aren't a vinyl record or a CD. Its nice to see how people could figure out how to insert and packaged the music in a exotic physical medium (like the game boy cartridge presented in the video). Nice video btw 👍.

      Yeahhh, that dude was charging like $90 before shipping for it and he didn't seem to have any respect for other artists who'd come before him and put their own work on carts. Was a cool looking release (included more interactivity than most usually do), but the price and attitude were pretty whack. There are plenty of other artists out there putting out chiptune music on gb carts. Who knows, perhaps one day I'll regret passing on it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
      These Oasis Ltd folks on the other hand, seem super passionate about playing around with format and experimenting and cartridge releases, and have given lots of shout outs and love to the homebrew community (AND their prices seem pretty accessible).

    I’m glad I found this video. I’m actually planning to release an album myself on GBA, using a flashable cartridge and rendering the audio/video using meteo. If you want to look it up, it’s called “New Vocal Sensation: GBA Video Edition.” can’t release too many of them though, I’m poor: can’t even afford a proper ripper/flasher, so I have to use the TF Card carts and put them in a new case. I’m glad you made this video though, it’s awesome! More people need to create releases on this format, it’s underrated af. I’m planning to release some on CD-I and 3DO as well, later down the line.

    One of my favorites is Remute's Technoptomistic on a Sega Genesis cartridge. Although it isn't vaporwave, it's a really cool concept and execution (even sporting a music video for Red Eyes) that works flawlessly on such an "old" console. The deluxe version of it is still up for sale but the standalone cartridge isn't.

    • @drgribb
      @drgribb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The execution was indeed very good. You could tell a lot of work went into it. Initially I thought it was just a one-off, but he seems to have dived head-first into making interesting format/cartridge-based releases, which is really cool. I picked up his snes followup to Technoptimistic ("Cult of Remute"), but passed on his TG-16/PC-Engine album, since I don't have one of those consoles and don't intend to get one for the forseeable future. Really interested to see where he goes next (I'd be happy with just another Genesis release though XD )

      I have this cartridge too and saw the video clip before the release of the album. It's so awesome to see this running on real hardware (even if there is way better).
      Maybe you'd like Mikeyeldey's album. The music is special but I like it a lot.
      22 tracks, 5 mini games, no video clip but a visualizer for 1 track... the cartridge shell, prints and the box are of very good quality and the guy sells it at a very low price!

    Awesome video. Just heard about these guys and all the cartridge-based and VHS releases that they're doing (and cassette!, but my primary interest is the other stuff). Really wild stuff! They seem incredibly passionate about the medium and experimenting with releases! And I saw a tweet they replied to where it sounded like they intended to do additional runs of all these cartridge releases that have sold out -- how can someone not be impressed by that?? I wish I could help them out in some way, as it sounds like their primary bottleneck is having more demand in their releases than they can keep up with at the moment (not a bad problem to have tbh!). *AND* they're giving out the roms for free download on their website, for people that missed out on the physical releases? I don't know how I could be any more impressed. Can't wait to buy some of their future releases!
    The really amazing thing to me about cartridge-based releases (that I don't see get brought up very often) is the idea of "performance-on-demand." Something like a tape, or a cd is an *audio-recording* , whereas with most cartridge releases the instructions for the soundchip are stored in the ROM (not sure about these carts in the video, since they seem to be using using the video-playback), and then *recreate* the music on-demand every time -- not a recording. This is incredibly powerful. Very few other mediums allow you to generate the music live, for the instrument it was meant to be played on. Again, this line is blurred a little bit with a video-cartridge like this, but I think it's still relevant. Really exciting to see so much appreciation and love for cartridge-based albums!!

    • @anonymousidea9119

      They might not have, but it seems they didn’t use the nintendo logo at least. You can release homebrew games physically on GBA perfectly legally but they might not be allowed to use the game boy logos.

      Nintendo has long dropped the GBA, and nothing says you need their permission to develop software. Same reason you can mod your printer to accept any ink without getting arrested

    holy shit what an great idea. imagine if more vaporwave releases come out as PS1 games and can be played without a modded/chipped console. the possibilities of bonus material etc. would be enormous.

    I would recommend a dive into the albums “Normal Love” by Eyn and “[lor_raine]” by Cult of Reason. Both are on Spotify, and as messy as they sound, they sound very cathartic. The first one I’d call post rock or experimental singer songwriter, the second one I’d call ambient and at times, even edm. I was told about these albums by a friend of mine who connected me to the artists. Eyn told me how the album is about struggling with autism. I’d check em out for a really interesting listen. Love the content, I’ve been binging all day :)
