Literally everyone who grew up with backyardigans is pissed of that International Super Spy isn't the popular episode. My personal favorite one as kid was Whodunit. Edit: Was not expecting so much talk about favorite episodes, was preferring to talk about International Super Spy
My favorite was the wild west ping-pong episode! I actually watched it the other day for nostalgia, and suddenly the show is now trending lol what a coincidence
The Backyardigans is all about imagination that can take place even at the comfort of your house with others, what makes this show so special is that they bring out this basis through music. Music and imagination, the both of best worlds.
Yeah. I feel like Backyardigans has the kind of magic that most kids shows like Dora the Explorer or Peppa Pig lacked of. Imagination is the most important and powerful tool for our human minds next to knowledge. The left mind may help us finding a solution to a problem and exercise our thinking skills, but the right mind has the ability to make something.
Wow, I just keep getting impressed by Martina's singing, everything is just so perfect: intonation, rhythm, consonants,, (immaculate flavor) articulation, all of it - just so captivating and satisfying!
As a kid who grew up on backyardigans, it's truly a shame it took people this long to give this show and the music the respect it deserves. Who else grew up with this show?
Ok I had to stop the video for a moment, because I'm so overwhelmed with happiness right now. I just graduated from a degree in music, and this song was the one that started it all. Castaways started my love for the bossa nova, and music in general. And to see Adam Neely, a TH-camr I'm such a fan of, speak about this song that means so much to me, is just pure bliss. I couldn't be happier in this moment. Thank you so much!!
I love this comment so much. Inspires me to get back into playing music instead of only just listening to it lol. Lots of love! I see that you make music? Cant wait to see what else you make!!
The backyardigans have just soooo much masterpieces, you can literally analyze many of the songs and get impressed by all of the creativity involved, it's just brilliant. But no one talks about it because it's from a kids show, i guess. There are just so many bops i can talk about them all day lol. I'm very glad at least this song is getting recognition.
I loved that my kids watched the Backyardigans because of the ingenious music on every episode. I loved how music genres were combined. One of those few kid shows that adults can appreciate lol.
I love it when the extra musical effort someone puts into a project gets recognised. Too often kids music is dumbed down, or music in a film doesn't suit the period, or the musicians in a shot aren't actually playing anything. So it's nice to see people care about that stuff
As a parent, I'm exposed to some truly horrific music. It frequently enrages me how kids media dumbs down music and just phones it in. Backyardigans was a massive breath of fresh air.
@@asthejayflies Funny you bring up Phineas and Ferb because I'm on summer vacation right now and I have no idea what to do.... Maybe I'll climb the Eiffel Tower
@@_swesters_ Good idea... In theory. Two things: 1) just because the music is garbage doesn't mean the whole show is. Example: Octonauts is a fantastic show that reuses the same generic canned music every single episode. 2) Unless a show is harmful I don't refuse to let my kids watch it. I want kids to develop their own taste in media and that means letting them experiment with stuff I don't enjoy. Also, I have enough battles with my kids about stuff that matters, I don't need to start a war over a show they want to watch but their know-it-all patent doesn't think the music is good enough.
Being Brazilian, this analysis has been even more interesting for me. And the part that you've mentioned the "year lost" really touched me, because I lost my dad recently due to the coronavirus. Thanks for your videos!
This feels like what happened to Lazy town. Some songs just get super popular out of nowhere, or straight up become a meme ... and i love everything about that
@@Queer_Nerd_For_Human_Justice I don’t know if YAAP was the first Lazy Town meme but it was the first one I was aware of. So to me it and We Are Number One kind of bookend its entire existence. (Even though I couldn’t sit through the rest of the plot and would just wait for the songs or even seek out solely the songs later lol)
The main reason these songs resonate to me is because of how chill and soulful these songs are. ESPECIALLY castaways. For a bunch of kids singing at the time, they got some damn good voices. And the choreography is so on point that it makes you want to dance yourself.
I never really watched Backyardigans, so I didn't realize how musically varied it was. I went to college with the guy who played Austin; it makes sense that he went to music school!
As a Brazilian with extensive knowledge of bossa nova, I feel that note in the "castaways" motif should be an E and not an F. F works too, of course, but E *feels* more Bossa nova because Bossa nova loves their sevenths. ;)
It was probably written as an E, but that's gonna be real hard for a kids choir to vibe on. If Hugo's right and it sequences to F on the Gm that little difference would add a notch of difficulty for locking in on the leading tone, which would be a good reason the recording ends up indeterminant.
I saw this in a Facebook group I'm in, and listening to the original I can definitely hear the E on both the I and ii chords. So shout-out to that kids for nailing that!
Feel bad for the kids who find this song on tiktok and didn't grow up with backyardigans (I still remember getting Sonic and then just chilling and watching Backyardigans)
Yo you remember those cars that had DVD players in the back? I felt so fucking lucky man cause my grandma had one and i watched the little mermaid all the time
Maybe it’s late and I’m just tired, but the thought that such care was taken in providing young kids with quality music and dance brings a tear to my eye.
Full section A: “Passed away, I have passed away.” “Hello I am dead” “I have passed away” “I died in a bar, afterlife seemed so far” “Passed away, hello, I have passed away”
As a Brazilian Backyardigans fan, I couldn't be happier about seeing these two musical areas (bossa nova and the show's songs) being spread around and valued. This video made my day.
I told the other musicians on a gig like 15 years ago that I was really digging the music from Backyardigans and they made fun of me relentlessly. Glad it’s getting some respect! 😀
@@KatieSzi I know some shows for slightly older kids are good, and I watch a lot of them, I just wish that the shows for little kids put in as much effort as the backyardigans
I was already basically an adult when The Backyardigans first released in 2004, I graduated high school. In 2008 I had my daughter and put on the current children's shows for her and one of my favorites was this show. I would sing along to the songs all the time. So even though this show's demographic was for the generation after mine, I still remember watching it with my daughter so it is nostalgic for me. I probably remember it more than she does lol.
Ahh, I was wondering if I was just too old. Not adult, but 9, so the style wouldn’t have appealed to me at the time. I was saying “I would’ve loved to grow up with this!” thinking it was at first even more recent, but then the comments talked about growing up with it so I wondered when it was from. I’m glad I got into music anyway but the sheer variety of styles in this show seems tantalising.
Friend: "Whats your favorite song?" Me: "Oh, its a song called Castaways about 6 year old children being stuck on an island on a show for 6 year old children"
Another children's show with music that surprised me was Bubble Guppies. There are still tunes that stick in my head over 6 years later. If you ever decide to do more of these, Bubble Guppies should definitely be on your list.
I had no idea they put so much time and money behind the Backyardigans. The music and choreography is clearly very well though out and then the animation is so sad (but pretty good for the time, I'll give em that).
I feel so old when people talk about Backyardigans. That show was all I cared about in my early childhood. (My personal favorite episode was Breakout as a kid) I'm glad it's getting more recognition.
Gah I don’t remember the names of the episodes cause I was around 5-7 when the 2013-2014 episodes came out and I didn’t care about the show names but I loved that western themed cowboy one with Pablo as the sherrif
I watched the Backyardigans for most of my childhood. I have no musical training whatsoever but I understood music in a deep way. With the sudden reappearance of this show, I now understand why I have a proclivity towards music. The songwriters were geniuses and exposed me to the flexibility of musical theory at a young age.
Why Amy Pham's comment "Why Adam Neely's "Why Castaways Is A Masterpiece In Songwriting" Is A Masterpiece In Music Theory, History, And Cultural Relevance" on Adam Neely's "Why Castaways Is A Masterpiece In Songwriting" Is True
Little known fact: the quote "songs make you feel thoughts" is now going to appear in every video by Adam Neely, each time attributed to a different musician
I genuinely appreciate the recognition of Brazilian music in modern jazz culture. I hereby offer to translate this video to Brazilian Portuguese free of charge (with professional quality, I've worked as a translator) , as well as other relevant videos.
This makes me realize how cool and well thought out kids shows and their soundtracks were growing up. Noggin was really out here expanding our harmonic palettes before we knew it!
Our parents generations don’t really get much recognition in wider society and it’s kinda sad because they were ignored when they were growing up too. Maybe that’s why many of them grew up to be better parents than the previous generation. They were the grandchildren of traumatized people and learned the effect that had on their parents. They grew up to be much kinder, understanding, and sincere people-even if just relatively speaking. Though I grew up with Gen X parents, so I might be over-generalizing for the rest of Gen Z.
I'm glad good music has resurfaced more in kids' shows. I grew up during an era where kids' shows went into a dark period of being heavily dumbed down and simplified, and for me (who started with phenomenal quality stuff like Fraggle Rock and Dinosaurs) it was shocking to see. There was good stuff still through the '90s of course (Out of the Box comes to mind, also Puzzle Place) but a lot of kids' TV just got really stupid. That's improved a lot since then and now there tends to be really good artistic and cultural education laced into everything, and it's really good to see.
@@ItsAsparageese Oh cool! I haven't really seen too many kids shows as of late, but I hope that they get their own Mr. Rogers if that makes sense? It's nice when people care enough about kids to take them seriously.
Backyardigans is just one of those shows that's legitimately enjoyable for everyone. Between myself and my younger siblings, it's been playing in my home on and off since 2004 and we somehow haven't gotten tired yet. The songs are so witty and fun (and catchy, I still remember at least half of them), and the whole concept of the show is really wholesome. I feel like it kinda has the same vibe as Phineas and Ferb but for a younger audience.
That made me give more Credit for that kids show, growing up i never cared about it, seeing all the work that went into it even makes me want to watch the show again
@@k.c8566 I know! But thanks to Tiktok, we can record, remix or reenact some of the best songs in the series! By the way, what's your favorite “The Backyardigans” episode? Mine is ‘Who Goes There?’, for referencing “Night At The Museum” and use of Flamenco music.
I'm fairly positive that the second note of the castaways motif should be an E; I've played and analyzed a massive amount of bossa nova, and (from what I've observed) although utilizations of fourths or second melodic transitions over perfect fifth movement happens all the time, straight triads are a rarity, and when they do appear it's near-inevitably over minor triads instead of major (as in the piece). All that said, it might have been made all thirds as it was recently written and other tendencies may as well be out the window, but I think that it would make a ton of sense granted the obvious influence of classic bossa nova on the composers.
Yeah, the flavor wouldn't be quite as immaculate if it were F instead of E. The maj7 is the harmony that brings the "we're on island time, now" vibe with that motif, so I'd want it there melodically, too. Especially if you're about to sit down on the D, the 6th! I think sometimes Adam doesn't want to get too deep in the weeds with these TH-cam videos. It's kinda surreal to see so much public interest in music theory!
@@GizzyDillespee The answer is that it's both - It's A>E>D the first time, and then A>F>D the second time. While there is some inconsistency on the pitch of the original, it's only a matter of cents, not entire semitones.
I love bossa nova, and when I heard this when I was younger I clearly remember this because my niece LOVED THIS SHOW and I enjoyed watching it with her because I always thought it was a guilty pleasure thing but now I can confirm the show was just created by musical geniuses! Lol
musical geniuses that by making this show made little kids fell in love with music and saving genres of music that in other circumstances would had died out and be forgoten forever
Just excellent. My 14-year-old daughter watched the show as a kid, and has just started singing "Castaways" in the last few weeks. This is such a sophisticated explanation of the appeal of the song, especially in 2021. "Feeling thoughts" - great concept.
My most memorable Backyardigans songs, besides the intro and all that, was when Tyrone when full Lone Texas Ranger and had like, a rodeo rap. I'm 22 and still sing that sometimes, lmfao
Martina has such a nice voice in contrast to all the the kinds of voices you hear in popular media nowadays; she sounds like she would be perfect for serenading me in some sweet song from the 50s or something. It's soothing.
I feel like gen z may become the return of bossa nova. I think it has to do with them growing up with the Wii, with such bossa nova bangers as the Wii Shop Channel and the Mii plaza. I am not complaining, I have always loved bossa nova
Not sure if it's a gen z thing but yeah I'm super into bossa nova too. I think the Wii really is part of it honestly. I've really gotten into getz/gilberto stuff and Toquinho e Vinicius, among others

I rewatched a bunch of Backyardings songs and was shocked. There is not ONE single *bad* song, they put a lot of effort, and I hope one day either nickelodeon or another studio re-animate and make more good children songs with the brand :)
@@nichasatummyache2510 But will they? Or will someone who wants to give their kid something to watch, (or, even a kid who wants something to watch themselves,) even look at this show? It’s not really on many conventional streaming platforms, and it doesn’t particularly stand out, at a glance. For most people, the original might as well not exist. Nothing about that would get worse if they tried a follow up, and it would even improve the original’s visibility, even if the new one was garbage.
When my kids would watch this show, I would often say, "WHO wrote these songs?". I was pleasantly surprised to learn the author of many of the songs is a brother to John Lurie, musician and host of 'Fishing with John' and 'Painting with John'. Check out The Lounge Lizards.

It's better to be happy than sad
Happiness is the best thing there is

But to make a beautiful samba
You need a touch of sorrow
Or you won't make a samba
[...]
Making samba is not telling a joke
Those who do just don't get it
The good samba is sort of a prayer
Samba is sadness that swings
And sadness brings always the hope
Of one day being sad no more

And even if today it is white in it's poetry
It's heart is still much too black

The Backyardigans is all about imagination that can take place even at the comfort of your house with others, what makes this show so special is that they bring out this basis through music. Music and imagination, the both of best worlds.
Yeah. I feel like Backyardigans has the kind of magic that most kids shows like Dora the Explorer or Peppa Pig lacked of. Imagination is the most important and powerful tool for our human minds next to knowledge.
The left mind may help us finding a solution to a problem and exercise our thinking skills, but the right mind has the ability to make something.

I believe in kids show soundtrack supremacy
Yeah its probably what got me into the kinds of music I listen to and know about.
Kinda bummed cause I watched so much Backyardigans when I was little, but I remember next to nothing about it and none of the songs

As a Brazilian with extensive knowledge of bossa nova, I feel that note in the "castaways" motif should be an E and not an F. F works too, of course, but E *feels* more Bossa nova because Bossa nova loves their sevenths. ;)
Hard agree. Then it also forms a kind of micro-sequence when in the 7th bar it is actually F, now the 7th of the II chord. Children's choir be damned!
It was probably written as an E, but that's gonna be real hard for a kids choir to vibe on. If Hugo's right and it sequences to F on the Gm that little difference would add a notch of difficulty for locking in on the leading tone, which would be a good reason the recording ends up indeterminant.
I don't have extensive knowledge of Bossa Nova, but E definitely feels righter.
I saw this in a Facebook group I'm in, and listening to the original I can definitely hear the E on both the I and ii chords. So shout-out to that kids for nailing that!

I loved this show when I was 5
I'm fairly positive that the second note of the castaways motif should be an E; I've played and analyzed a massive amount of bossa nova, and (from what I've observed) although utilizations of fourths or second melodic transitions over perfect fifth movement happens all the time, straight triads are a rarity, and when they do appear it's near-inevitably over minor triads instead of major (as in the piece).

@@XbninjaXIV doesn’t mean there’s no merit to the actual music lol
this is just 2015's obsession with Little Einsteins on repeat lol
He almost said it, but opted for the word "journey" rather than trip.
Pretty much yeah. Lmao
I personally find The Backyardigans to be better than Little Einsteins, though
WE'RE GOING ON A TRIP

...have you even watched kids shows now? Even kindergarten shows, like Bluey, is so good I cried just by watching a clip of it
🤣🤣🤣 tf
Rockabilly Lullaby (hush little mermaid) was our family's lullaby at bedtime with a few word substitutes! Love the Backyardigans and the genres of music they brought us. Thanks for the expert analysis!
I got to experience The Backyardigans as a parent of small children. What a pleasure! I love the theme song, which feels both incredibly simple and incredibly deep.
I rewatched a bunch of Backyardings songs and was shocked. There is not ONE single *bad* song, they put a lot of effort, and I hope one day either nickelodeon or another studio re-animate and make more good children songs with the brand :)
i'd be scared if they made an adaptation
@@andyo3637 Exactly don't let them bring it back, the original will always exist for anyone who wants to watch it
@@nichasatummyache2510
But will they? Or will someone who wants to give their kid something to watch, (or, even a kid who wants something to watch themselves,) even look at this show?
It’s not really on many conventional streaming platforms, and it doesn’t particularly stand out, at a glance.
For most people, the original might as well not exist. Nothing about that would get worse if they tried a follow up, and it would even improve the original’s visibility, even if the new one was garbage.
I really dont trust reanimated/rebooted shows especially after Thomas the tank engine
When my kids would watch this show, I would often say, "WHO wrote these songs?".
I was pleasantly surprised to learn the author of many of the songs is a brother to John Lurie, musician and host of 'Fishing with John' and 'Painting with John'. Check out The Lounge Lizards.
