Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. None of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
The movie announced on Facebook before every new episode. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.
"When you say everything, you say very little." Damn, that was really quite profound Matt.
just like seeing too much is seeing nothing. 🙂
Gonna watch this, shave, and go to work. What a treat.
omg I LOVE shaving
The combination of Christopher Lee and the underwater setting reminds of a genuine TV movie that thrilled and haunted my childhood, "Goliath Awaits," about a liner sunk in 1939 that's found to have survivors living on into the early 1980s.
oh this era of disaster flicks was just classic. Airport 77 is a fun one, created a bunch of classic tropes. Weird aside, my aunt actually worked on The Towering Inferno as a prop master and continuity checker :-)
Wow, your aunt must be really lucky to have been a part of that movie.
Only 861 views! Spread the word this show deserves more! The channel deserves more subscribers too!
I just love that 'Come Fly With Me' Frank Sinatra LP sitting in the background. As usual, you have impeccable taste.
George Kennedy, a sentient porkchop. LOL
Craig is starting to look like a grizzled old man.... What a stud
He's still hot ;)
I just want to tell you both good luck, we are all counting on you.
Love you guys! Been watching for years and just wanted to drop a comment letting you know that. Keep up the great work!
I REMEMBER this movie! Saturday morning cartoons has been replaced with Welcome "To The Basement"! Extra-cheese & snark on my order, please! Please make many, many more!
Pretty amazing they made a series of 4 movies based off of one book
Jackson could only make a trilogy out of the Hobbit.
13:50 They're going to lift the boat up, are they? Love you guys!
Brenda Vaccaro’s character is not the flight attendant-why does everyone think this? She was the project manager running interference for Jimmy Stewart’s character.
You guys are KILLING it with the jokes tonight, haha!
I think I've seen Airplane! about a dozen times, but never any of the films it was a parody of. Thanks for letting me watch one vicariously.
Hey Matt and Craig, just tossed you guys a donation on the site. I've been watching the channel since 2008 and you guys just are awesome. I'd love to hear your guys thoughts on two different documentaries for the next scene it! Muscle Shoals and Free Solo. Both were exceptional but free solo really had my heart rate elevated the entire time. Love to you both.
Ahhhh Welcome to the Basement! Now I can experience an entire film I have no real intention of ever actually watching thru to its entirety and feel like I had - its like crib notes but more fulfilling and time saving
George Kennedy was needed over at the set of "Police Squad." Hence, the phoned-in "Airport '77" performance.
I can't believe they killed Dracula...😂 and right after that weird kiss too
Love your shows, guys.
Especially this episode. I loved the quick jokes. 'Do you like gladiator movies?'
Is that what drove Dooku to the dark side? That Buck Rogers wouldn't go in on the seaweed as food venture?
God, Matt and Craig, your jokes were on point for this one.
“George Kennedy: Ernest Borgnine for the ladies” HONESTLY THO
Jack Lemmon's son Chris is in this movie. he is the radio man
Really enjoyed the movie. Great cast and good special effects. Not as good as "The Poseidon Adventure" and "The Towering Inferno", but it was enjoyable.
OMG you guys are cracking me up!!! lol
Speaking of Oscar-nominated documentaries.....
Have you seen Free Solo? Utterly thrilling. For 100 straight minutes, I couldn't have looked away from the screen if my house was on fire.
seen it: The Crow
btw Craig, this was the best one all season. the new audio recorder is great!
This brought back so many memories, thanks!
I grew up in the 2000's and 2010's and we still talked about the Bermuda Triangle. Gen Z continues to follow the tradition of myths (I believe you guys also mentioned the bruce lee death myths during the Way of the Dragon, we also had those)
Sentient Porkchop - LOL!
Buchek: Kolchak's twin brother!
12:27 To be fair to Christopher Lee, he was used to biting women on the neck.
Thanks as always, fellas. Another great episode.
Have you considered creating a "Seen It" database for your website, so fans can look up whether or not you guys have already discussed a movie or not? I, for one, would appreciate it. That being typed...
Seen It: "What We Do In The Shadows"? I loved the film and am now finding the TV series almost maybe better ...(*shrugs)? Either way, I love them both and was wondering what your thoughts were.
You can search our episode guides on our website with your browser's "find" function and find seen its that way.
Yes, we're talked about that movie (probably on a Halloween episode)
I wanted to use my great grandfather's name ( Forrest Cameron) but my husband flat out refused to go with Forrest , because of the movie. Even in 2000 it was a big naming conflict.
Loving the good audio again too!
no technical issues this time, very nice
Cool to learn about the films Airplane was spoofing.
I missed this when it went up! But hey, still saw it.
Perhaps the Bermuda Triangle is an area where it was just far enough away from all three points to lose radio contact or perhaps radio signals cancelled each other out.
Airport 77 looks like it took a lot from Robert Wise's The Hindenburg from 1975.
thumbs up at "Ratso"
I think this movie had an actual influence on a future movie: The famously reviled 21st-century disaster movie The Core. The premise of the plane's construction, design, and composition in this movie is as absurd as pretty much all of the science in The Core, but the general concept is essentially the same: A group of people who only slightly know each other are trapped in an enclosed metal container, everything outside will kill them instantly, and the walls won't hold forever. The difference, besides how they got there, was that The Core traded off having fewer interesting set pieces to look at for having a more reasonable number of characters to follow.
'Airplane!' was definitely caused by the 'Airport' disaster movies of the 70's but actually has more scenes in common with 'Zero Hour'.
Technically it's a remake. The Zucker Brothers bought the rights for $3000.
so happy I didn’t miss the whale moment at the very end
Outstanding episode, gentlemen.
This is one of the rare films when the all bad guys are either killed or incapacitated about halfway through the movie.
If you never saw it you should check out Privates Eyes with the great Don Knotts and Tim Conway!
have you seen Airplane! "I speak Jive" LOL
Midnight Madness was my favorite movie as a kid. It was also Michael J Fox's first movie. I havent seen it in 30 years and all most scared to watch it again because I may remember it being better than it actually was. Seen it?
This is an ad for the navy 🤣
PLEEEEASE do Shadow of a Doubt, if you can fit it in some way or another. It's not only a great film (and one of the first realistic depictions of a serial killer), but it would be a perfect film for your show.
Ratzo, are you walkin' here? Guys, have you seen "The Snake Pit" with Olivia De Haviland? It's a nice snapshot of mental health inst. in the 40-50's.
If you watch this movie on the same LaserDisc player as on the plane, will the universe collapse on itself?
My cousin Forrest was married around 1997, yeah, his in-laws had a field day
13:21 FUN FACT: That's Chris Lemmon - Jack Lemmon's son
It's funny they mention the risk of naming someone Forrest. Was watching the film first before watching Basement and thought the same thing about the name Benji. I would never name a kid Benji cuz Benji the dog would always go missing.
I'd love for you guys to talk a bit about Jim Jarmusch! Favorite film of his? General thoughts?
Yall really need to do a kickstarter to make a review shows about current films.
Hey guys, have you seen the Australian film "Snowtown"? I just saw it and thought it was fantastic. Cheers.
Thanks for reading my comment and expounding, Matt! Agree to disagree. I can understand the idea that there's a ton going on that can feel like too much. Riley may have been stretching himself too thin overall. Oddly, that's my criticism of "Us." Fantastic movie overall, but some real problems toward the end in my opinion (some discrepancies that make suspension of belief super difficult).
My rebuttal on STBY would be that just about everything you see is connected to the main ideas. The "rap show" parody, for example, is related both to the racial stuff and the capitalism stuff. The expectations that some (generally music producers and some white folks) have of what rap is, what it says. The bizarre obsession with rap that says nothing and is full of expletives (something Boots Riley, a rapper with a message, would know a lot about). Nonsensical rap that one can bop to sells better than rap that tries to get you to think. The parodies of art galleries/shows and sign spinning add to the way capitalism will dress anything up to make it appealing, including slavery. It's a movie full of references in the way an Edgar Wright movie is, but they're social references instead of pop culture ones. Those are complex concepts, and it looks like for many folks this style of presenting them was just too much and too crazily done.
For what it's worth, I agree with you.
@@MrSandpaperCondom Thanks very much! 😁 It means something at least.
It's okay to disagree too. Film is awesome because of the many ways it can be understood. As long as someone is able to explain why they feel the way they do, and as long as they're not inaccurate (like "I didn't like it because blah happened," when that wasn't even how it happened), their analysis is valid. I do love debating though.
Guess the casting person saw Stewart in "No Highway in the Sky" and decided to give him a call.
Why not https on the website?
Will we get to see the Sling Wing in action?
TRY BEING NAMED JENNY!!!
Hilarious, as always
RIP M. Emmett Walsh.
Forrest was ruined as a name by Nathaniel Bedford Forrest.
I have to drive by a state park named by him. I always want to hang an old union flag over the road sign
To be honest, if you do a show that has anything to do with film history, you’re going to be seeing Christopher Lee a LOT. He’s in 90% of all films. Fact.
Thats not a falcon, ITS A BAT! Wait, maybe its a sentient porkchop?
Poseidon Adventure is better.
That's what I sink...
Go to the corner you know what you did.
Craig would be proud.
10:09 that's a first on this show, I think!
Craig's joke about not starting with the beginning of the series made me think about dead horse franchises. You know, your Die Hards. Your Mission Impossibles. Your Fast and the Furiouses. Movies that keep getting made even though no one is really asking for them.
Is there any movie that is the fourth in the series or later that you'd like to talk about? Otherwise, it would be a fun niche to cover on the show.
Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home is the best of the series after "Khan."
@@craigjohnson6423 Pandemic's got you replying to comments from a year ago, eh Craig? Thanks for getting to my question eventually!
@@DrLipkin Actually, a less extravagant pandemic. I have a cold. But, yes, your challenge was too interesting for me not to respond to.
1) Alice's Restaurant
2) Tommy
Seeing Ralphies dad in any other movie is weird. Where’s the leg lamp? The turkey? The Christmas?
Sugarcat have you ever seen any episodes of Kolchak, the night stalker?? You wanna see Ralphie’s dad fight some creatures of the night?
He was also in a short that was basically an ad for appliances. Even there, he was really good at physical comedy. He's such a ham.
What happens to all the gifts Matt gives Craig
Benji, have you been in a Turkish prison?
CR-7 Gas is Cristiano Ronaldo's farts
I had a Zoom H4 that bit the dust. No more Zoom's for me, heard of too many Zoom deaths. And I took one apart and it's just badly made.
a little less panning please! a little helps, too much is distracting, love the show
panning?
@@blamesocietyfilms panning is basically the spread of the vocals. how when one talks, the playback is mostly in one speaker. it's an audio tool used to make things sound more on the left or right side, maybe the mic is set up to have a wide stereo width, converting the file from stereo to mono might help, but make sure to turn down the volume a little first, or it will bounce too loud.
Why won't Craig watch "First Reformed"? It was mentioned that he probably won't, or at least won't for some time, but it isn't said why he won't.
He doesn't like Ethan Hawke. He's also mentioned his interest in good christian movies and First Reformed is very anti-christian, that might play into it as well.
@@lyricsfromsweden I didn't think of First Reformed as anti-christian. All the characters are Christians, some more devout than others. And is made from a Christian prospective. I saw it as an exploration of what it means to follow Jesus, what the church should be doing to help to help the world, and the frustration of not seeing eye to eye with the establishment on these issues.
If anything it would be the kind of movie Craig would
@@mrtveenstra Yeah, okay, I buy that. It's probably just the Ethan Hawke thing then haha.
So if George Kennedy is basically Ernest Borgnine for the ladies then Ernest Borgnine is George Kennedy for the men? 🤔🤔🤔
And 'Taxi Driver' was a re-writing of 'The Searchers' by John Ford.
ASS you didn’t say “A.S.S.” I would have been awesome
That seemed like a boring movie. Glad I only have to watch a brief synopsis of it
Another Shocker These guys watch so much obscure garbage but Dont see a Hitchcock classic Shadow of a Doubt
