Sorry about the delay with this one. Even though I worked on it all month, I still ended up needing a couple more days to finish it. Thanks for being patient! And stay tuned for a midyear special this Saturday. :)

Today is my birthday and it is 10:30 PM and I have to get up for work tomorrow but I really wanted to watch one of my favorite Airport movies - and I knew I couldn’t do it in time. I’ve watched this review a couple times, so AHA! That is the solution. Thank you so much. This gave me my Airport fix on my birthday. You have a very calming persona so I’m going to get a good nights sleep! ❤🎉😊

One of my favorite things in THE CONCORDE, is a delightfully silly feature that seemingly doesn’t get much attention.
When the plane takes off, it’s attacked by missiles (that they impossibly evade) and then on their approach to France, it’s attacked by fighter jets. They eventually land and the next day, EVERYBODY GETS BACK ON THE PLANE!!
I feel that if I was aboard an aircraft that has been shot at TWICE, I wouldn’t be keen on getting back on it.

I loved the way they did the phone calls and radio calls. So much better than listening to one half of a conversation where the only person you see repeats what the other person says in order to create the whole conversation.

Rome, thank you so much. I can entirely relate to wanting to do a thorough and definitive job on several more or less related movies and I'm glad you did. This is easily the biggest vote of confidence I've ever seen for Airport 77. Just two years later Jack Lemmon would play another pivotal character who is a master of technical information in The China Syndrome and I wonder if I would want to see those two movies back to back. So many parodies spring to mind, like The Carol Burnett Show doing Airport 1975, with Carl Reiner in the Heston role getting on board the plane by way of trampoline. A personal favorite disaster parody of mine is known simply as The Big Bus. Wild to think of all these as distant descendants of Stagecoach, that one ancient Western you like. All right, Rome, thanks, I am both impressed and delighted, and owl be seeing you.

Two AIRPORT 1975 actors were in the original PLANET OF THE APES. In PLANET OF THE APES, Charlton Heston's girlfriend, Nova, was played by Linda Harrison. Harrison, who used the name "Augusta Summerland", played , Gloria Swanson's assistant in AIRPORT 1975.

Totally agree that Airport 77 is the most fun, crazy as it is. The first film in the series is probably the most solid "film" but is also very soap-opera-esque. The third film looked ridiculous in its initial previews but it is really fun and as you pointed out a good hodgepodge of different films and genres. Christopher Lee is always a class act. Excellent work as always in your review! Keep 'em coming!

I've only seen parts of AIRPORT '77, but what I did see included the crash sequence into the water. Here's where I want to plug the work of a guy seldom ever credited, Charlie Baker, who had worked at Universal since 1923, primarily in the special effects department. He'd been called out of retirement (for the umpteenth time) to handle the very very complicated mechanical effects required, and with far younger people watching (I might even call them what he might've called them "young whipper-snappers") and LAUGHING at the "old codger" he pulled off the very complex shot of the actual crash in ONE single take to perfection, quite an amazing feat....while all the "whipper-shappers" were hushed into sudden jaws-dropped respect. Hero moment (instead of that snide "senior moment" attitude) comment! Charlie was about 80 at the time. A great guy and very nice, humble man.

    • @Weiselberry

@@Weiselberry Some of Charlie Baker's memorable work is seen in the silents, like PHANTOM OF THE...SOMETHING OR OTHER, I forget BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE WOLF MAN, TARANTULA, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN....and literally everything in between ever done at Universal that required special effects.

I enjoyed Airport very much. Not much profanity, very good action and characters. Airport 1975 would have been much better as either a mini series or a television movie. I'm not a fan of serious profanity and feel such use made the film less affective. The conversation between Karen Black and air traffic control was so emotional. It just broke my heart hearing Karen talk about there being no one to fly the plane. I thought Airport 1977 was a good film and the reason for the disaster was very inventive. The fourth film was a real klunker. The Patroni character is messed up and the end of his marriage was not in continuity will how all the previous movies showed him to have a very strong marriage and family life, unless the name change of the wife between the first and second film means he had divorced the first wife or she died. But his character still wasn't done right. They killed the wife off? By the light hearted way he acted, I thought they had divorced. I agree with you about the retcon of how many children he had in this film. Yes, I too could have done without the sexual talk between the pilots. This movie so needs to be reedited, if possible. I would even settle for a deep fake George Kennedy to have new lines to get his character right. I thought the first 3 movies had elements that were in The Poseidon Adventure, one important one being that I cared for all the characters in all three movies. I loved Alain Delon in Zorro.

I don't care that you're not doing it on purpose; this is a terrific series of disaster movie reviews that deserve their own playlist.
Great reviews of hugely entertaining movies BUT - sorry, I know this is churlish of me given you've mentioned Airplane so many times - it's really hard for me to watch them unironically given the parody is SO GOOD*. I get that the tone/humour are not...erm...your cup of tea, but I'd love to hear your take on Airplane. Well, a lad can dream anyway.
I'm old enough to have been asked up to the cockpit of the plane and sat in the pilot's lap**. As a wee tacker I was ecstatic about it and it's a crying shame that such innocent fun has been taken from us. Also seen the dripping crack, so to speak, but was informed by a pilot once that it's just the interior lining of the aircraft, i.e. cosmetic, not structural. Apart from flying through a typhoon - a good hour or two (but felt longer) of gut-wrenching, rollercoastering terror - the worst experience I ever had was a fire in the hold. When stewards are panicking with fire extinguishers you know that things are serious.
    *Not forgetting Zero Hour!..!
**Why, yes, I do like gladiator movies, thanks for asking.

Only ever saw AIRPORT '75 in the theater, and AIRPORT on tv/only parts of AIRPORT '77 (see my other comment), and never CONCORD...er, other than a cupl of effects shots (not the best). I'll check out AIRPORT '77 for sure, and maybe go back to the first film again.
Music scores for a lot of films (and especially many many tv series) had, to me, a very generic quality until the advent of some of John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith's (starting with PLANET OF THE APES) work. I wonder what these films might be like with the kinds of scores those two fellows were able to come up with? Music is SO important to films....so I especially appreciated what you had to say overall in that regard.

In 1979 the worst-performing Airplane movie cost $14million to make and grossed $65million. Today movies are not nearly as profitable. A mid-sized movie today will cost $70 million to produce and another $70million to market, so $140 million all in, and the film turn over $140 million at the box office, meaning they will make a loss after splitting the profits with the movie theaters and hope to break even and make a small profit from movie channels and online rentals and sales.
    What a change in economics!
    Old movies really were gold!!!

I thought most people now-a-days knew that Airplane! was a direct parody of Zero Hour! (1957). In fact Airplane was suppose to be a parody of midnight tv movies with fake commercial breaks, but a studio head told them to drop the parody commercials and just do the airplane movie.

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don't think that's common knowledge. That probably has to do with the title similarity (Airport-Airplane) and the timing of release, plus I find Zero Hour! isn't that well-known. Some people are aware that Airplane! took portions of its script from Zero Hour!, but the popular assumption is that it was intended to spoof the Airport series, which it does in part.

You bring up a good point about how these films show how much things changed in that decade. The originial airport was a down to earth film that illustrated the operations of a major airport and air travel. Yes, I intended the pun. It is amazing how they do it. The subsequent movies veered further from reality. Airport '79 thew reality out the window. That calls for harsher criticism. The real star of that movie was The Concorde. There needed to be a semblance of realism about what it can do. After the original airport came out some comedians made jokes about Dean Martin, who embraced the reputation of being a heavy drinker, being the pilot. There was a TV movie, "The Doomsday Flight", that is a good airplane drama. They stopped playing it on television after a rash of airline hijackings.

At risk of being tossed "off the air" (without a parachute, no doubt) for so many blabby comments) I will add that David Lowell Rich was really THE guy, it seems, to do ANY modest-budgeted film about airline/airplane films back in the day. : He also did THE SKY'S NO LIMIT (1983?) which dealt with the training of female astronauts, which I worked on. He was still smarting from the criticism of the effects on CONCORDE, but we passed with, er, flying colors it seems. I was told he was pretty ornery after that CONCORDE fiasco, but we got along famously, and he was nice as well as ....complimentary. about our flying scenes (done on the super-super cheap, since it was a small film done for tv).
I will also add that I really liked your kind of "what I'd do to fix it" asides near the end. In fact, this is something that I think a lot about myself on many films (and have even played with actually making those changes on a couple films for my own edification.) Some lowly, or borderline films could really be made into much better films---maybe even into good films----with some judicious editing, adding a few things etc. Anyway, I'd be happy if you decided to feature more "asides" in future films along the lines of that little fix-it chat you did on this one.
Uh, maybe time to shut off my blabby-ness!

No, no, I don't mind your stories at all! Keep 'em coming! :) I'll see what I can do about incorporating more "how to fix it" commentary in future reviews. That kind of thing doesn't always come to me naturally, but it is a fun mental exercise when you're confronted with a movie that was just shy of being a success. Glad you enjoyed this video so much!

Dramalama!! Lol, Inspired by your review I've rewatched all four films from Monday night to Wednesday night, actually rewatched three of them and one for the first time, I'd seen Airport, Airport 77 and Airport 80 - Concorde. I believe Airport 80 is the one I've seen the most as I think it aired quite often here perhaps because it was European based. I couldn't really remember that much about the films except the great cast each had and the trying to catch the Concorde bit with the net from the final film. Instead of the Airport series they could've called it the terrible marriage series, after you rewatched these films and and also viewing I Married A Monster From Space it's no wonder you spoke about the worries of marriage like you did lol, these films are overhead compartment jam packed of dramalama lol, always makes me laugh, I forgot how soapy they were but also lots of fun, I was amazed to learn the first was up for best picture. I liked Kennedy's character Patroni but he was all over the place, not only did his kids vanish but his characters back story and expertise grew massively over the films, in the first film they wouldn't allow him to pilot the plane through the snow because he hadn't the experience and the final film he was dodging a drone in a Concorde like it was a fighter jet and he was a respected pilot with 30 years experience, I liked how devoted he was to his wife as it was a complete contrast to almost every other character, hated how they killed her off screen just to set up some awkward randyness lol, also amazed that a so called great reporter didn't think it was odd that a drone just like the one her boyfriend created tried to blow up her plane, or think it was odd that a jet tried to blow them up, no halting plans for an investigation, nope it's just a Thursday, it happens, on with the flight tomorrow lol~ ( oops SPOILERS ). Airport 77 is also my favourite, great to see Jack Lemon play the in control action guy as he often played the reverse type of character, I wonder what Jimmy Stewart was thinking as a genuine pilot, a war hero when he was listening to the actors talking about the disaster. Great to see Joseph Cotton and De havilland on screen together although a scene between Stewart and Cotton would've been amazing too, Darren McGavin was also great I thought, he had screen presence, McGavin and characters with Eastern European names ending with a K worked well for him, Buchek, Kolchak. I think Airport 77 is the most fun and easiest to watch. It was my first time watching Airport 75 and I did enjoy it, the end was especially exciting and it had a lot of tension with Karen Blacks character at the controls, Gloria Swanson was fun, I kinda hope she was like this version in real life lol, Airport 75 was also the first time I heard my surname on screen, the English version of it, well it's still Irish but the easier to digest less nutty version. Airport 75 was Ok, it had a lot of fun parts but at times it felt the most like Airplane from the four films for me, not too much but a couple of interactions with one being the guitar playing nun with Linda Blairs little girl. Watching the films so close together I found myself wishing Burt Lancaster had made a cameo appearance in some of the later films, his character did have a weight to him, some gravitas, it actually surprised me that his character left any kind of impression on me. Your Airplane experience with the leaky roof beats my earwig story, I'd be like : " you know what?" It's only on the other side of the continent, I'll walk! I'll see you in a few days no air dramalama for me."lol My most nerve wracking airplane experience was leaving New York on the way back to Ireland and seeing ice stalactites on the wings, it wasn't a big deal but at the time I was freaking out a little bit. My sister has always loved watching air crash investigations and murder shows like a crime to remember and homicide hunter so I have general nervousness on planes or around people lol, she actually puts them on to help her sleep. Lol. fantastic review, really fun. ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

WOW--you watched all 4 of them in a shorter span of time than I did! You get a gold star! Thanks for sharing your reaction to the movies. Good takes all around. Right, I was fine with Patroni's progression from the first to the second film, but in the third it was like, "So... what's he doing here again?", and then the fourth was just way out there. Didn't even feel like the character was originally written to be him. I agree, Darren McGavin stood out in Airport '77's all-star cast. I wondered that about Gloria Swanson too. I perused the personal quotations section on her IMDb page and she definitely had a sense of humor. One statement she made was about how in reality she was nothing like Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd., yet so many people believed she'd been playing herself (albeit an exaggerated version), and she found that kind of mortifying. I get the idea that her persona in Airport 1975 was at least a little closer to the truth. She agreed to do the movie (her last) because she felt it would be a film her grandchildren could go see, one that had excitement and fun but no senseless violence. Hm, I don't know, Bartolomeu, that earwig story was pretty horrifying. And you got to have your own "There's something on the wing!!" moment! :)

Ha! I guess I did have my own " there's something on the wing" moment lol, aww, it's now a wasted opportunity in time when I could've attempted my terrible William Shatner impression :(. My earwig story is bad but your leaky roof one is too lol, maybe earwigs caused it, earwigs on a plane starring Samuel L Jackson, I combined two real life nerve wracking incidents and created a box office hit! ....the idea of hundreds of earwigs falling through the leaky crack, ok, I was wrong burn this idea with fire. Thank you for sharing the information you discovered about Gloria Swanson, she did seem like a very cheerful lady. ~ Thank you again Ms Weiselberry :) ~

Aside from the *Airplane! / Airport 1975* connections, my only frame of reference to these films is seeing a 1979 full-page newspaper ad for *The Concorde...Airport '79* and my 7-year old brain being so intimidated by the imagery of this unstoppable behemoth racing through the heavens!
I've never seen these films, though. I don't normally do double features for new watches, but I might make an exception in this case, and knock them out over two nights. My suspicion before hearing your thoughts is that these particular films aren't going to be the most layered works of complex art that require great contemplation/breathing space between viewings. *L*

I like the first airport will be the best, play because of a huge Dean Martin fan and I love his character! He made him less of a caricature. Charlton Heston acted like he didn't want to be in the picture like he was too good for it! Cementing what I always thought about him as the most overrated actor! I completely agree with you about Airport 79. The worst of the franchise with the most implausible plot. It played wore like a Love boat in the sky, move-in special guest stars mostly comprised of TV stars, instead of movie stars like in the past movies. Im a Robert Wagner fan, but this was probably his worst movie! He acted like he couldn't wait to be done with the role! I completely agree with you about George Kennedy's character assassination in this movie, although he did try to save it. I need to re-watch airport 77

Well, did you break your record for the longest video ever on your channel?? If you did, CONGRATULATIONS. Better then any review I ever heard about any of the Airport movies by anyone. I don't remember if you did Airplane! yet. If you didn't, well...you sort of missed one. Just kidding.
Also loved the Weiselberry Airport stories you put in there.
To answer your question, Airport was not the first movie to utilize the split screen in story telling. The Boston Strangler (1968), was one of, if not the first movie to do that. Another movie you should give a review to starring Tony Curtis, Henry Fonda and (guess who), George Kennedy.
Again, excellent review 👏. Oh I have to congratulate you for adding a few other Airport kind of 70s movies that your friend Daisuke Beppu missed on his 30 Days Of 70s Disaster movies. No criticism there, just want to plug it on your comments. Hope you don't mind. Thank you!!

Ha, nope, I've got a couple longer ones, but it's up there. Glad you enjoyed it! As I mentioned in the video, I think of Pillow Talk (1959) as pioneering the split-screen feature, particularly for communication scenes as done in Airport.
