Can you imagine the increase in theft from construction machinery and bowsers. Some machines easily will hold £300+ of road diesel. This is going to be a disaster and in the end the customer (everyone) will have to pay. This should be scrapped. Even red diesel is over a £1 a litre now, at least it put people off stealing it to put in their cars. Now they can with no trace! I can only imagine a global economic collapse is being planned and it's just another strategic move.
Theft is no doubt going to be a huge issue, I really don't think there is a good solution to it either. Its not just the loss of fuel, its the damage done by the thieves to get at it too, and the downtime from that. Not good news going forward for sure.
Great content as usual.. I guess for the small guys I would aim to leave machine as empty as possible at the end of the day and bring fuel in a bouser on the pick-up every or have a system to pump fuel straight out of the vehicle tank... I appreciate condensation in empty tanks is any issue but you would have to play that off against the damage / cost of fuel theft...
I was talking to an engineer that had worked in the oil industry in Scotland and he said that hydrogen is very difficult to stop it eating through pipes. He said one of the materials they were using was hastelloy which is unbelievably expensive. He reckoned that until there was a big enough market for whatever fuel we are forced to use the investors won't put their money into the change over.
@@Olliegunns Thanks Ollie I've grown up on the farm the rules on red diesel have always had a lot of grey areas on the diesel theft a big tank of white will be tempting for the perks of the job petty theft
The amount of red that’s stolen the now is an all time high up here in Scotland, imagine how much fuel theft will go up when it changes, will be madness, aswell leaving lumps of gold in the middle of quarry’s, night whatchmen will be tied up,
Interesting hearing your view on it Ollie.. I've got a 1200l tank normally for red, I got a price for white for 1000l and there was no difference from petrol station price.. I did wonder on how they will check on the smaller jobs whether you could get away with red.. do you know what the fine would be ?
No idea what the fine is, but if its anything like other forms of tax avoidance (which is basically what it would be), they like to backdate the fine, and if you cant prove that they have caught you with the first tank of red you have put in the machine for years - they will pull your pants down as far back as they can go. In my opinion, its really not worth it. My price is going up and that's what it will have to be from now on.
Very true.. trouble is it's not just the plant but dragging it from site to site needs to be factored into the increase... Just seems such a high increase is needed to be on the same money and with the cost of living going up it would be helpful to also increase my labour rate.. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
How long have you got to use existing red diesel stock ?? I am a domestic user with a bit of land and run a micro. We have 2 local petrol stations which I usually get my gas oil from and it's going to be interesting to see what checks they put in place going forward. This is just what the Nation needs - I fear that a recession is looming ......too many things happening at the same time ..everything going up up up !
Informative , however , Doris says we are going to stop buying fuel from Russia on jan 1 2023 , he said we currently get 20% of diesel from there , he is wrong it’s in fact 40% and since we refine very little diesel here in England there is going to be a shortage
Oh no doubt, things are changing weekly, even since I made this video earlier this month. Going to be an interesting year as a contractor that's for sure. I have to say I don't see good times ahead, too many factors working against the industry.
Many users are running on HVO, but the trouble is stage V regs state it must be measured on EN590 diesel. So using it is technically illegal and also invalidates warranty.
That’s interesting to know. Personally, knowing what adding a small amount of bio content to mineral diesel did for fuel bug related issues… I’m staying well clear of HVO!
Politicians love to make everything complicated. I’m glad you didn’t go into what the taxes go towards paying . . . if it is anything like here in the U.S. . . . it sounds good, but you never see the results. 🤷🏼♂️😐😠 Have a great rest of your weekend! - Samuel
Firstly excellent video thanks !! Unfortunately the current government seems obsessed with electric vehicles which as you say is unsuitable for us in the construction sector. So to say that the change is for environmental benefits is nonsense if there isn’t a government backed alternative to diesel. Personally I’ve followed JCBs hydrogen research and think that is the obvious green alternative but it needs government backed infrastructure to make it viable, which doesn’t appear to be happening
You didnt mention the cost of hydrogen, for the green stuff its going to cost about 3 times the price of diesel 😭 the advantage of electricity is its cheaper and more efficent something like 80% compared to 40% for diesel emgines. So you pay upfront for the battery machine but its much cheaper to run in the long term.
That is a very good point! I am no expert on hydrogen, and maybe need to do a bit more research and do a video on its own going through the proposed advantages and maybe hidden costs of running it
A big loading shovel parked overnight in a remote quarry with £800 pounds of diesel in it my question is; Has the government given the police extra resources to cope with this problem??? What about the hire centers hire out a machine with white and get it back with red in? got to flush again? Will put the price of food up in the shops by some margin.
This is going to be a massive headache for the Bank of England MPC in the near future. The upshot is not going to be popular with the public. I wouldn't be surprised if the government U-turn, for this issue alone.
I'd like to think so, but they are looking for any way to claw back the excessive spending of the last few years. Its an easy win for them to take from what they see as a very profitable sector. As for enforcement, I suspect they will use the logs from the fuel suppliers to see who is buying red and inspect them?
K! kerosene will have to be used I guess. Burn liquid paraffin maybe? Bio diesel? Converting to methanol, or ammonia, or fuel cells that use such fuels?
I think if you emptied it down as much as you can, then filled with white, the residual amount of red would be unnoticeable. I've run my machines on white before and it doesn't take long to purge the red from the system. If HMRC were to inspect you, surely the full tank of white would be proof enough that you are following their regulations
@@BigBadDas The only way i see them policing us smaller guys is at purchase point, I'm sure there will be a new form to fill in at purchase, if and when you purchase red. Then they have your address, van reg, company name etc and can track your usage, a high usage will warrant an inspection etc...
No free lunch no matter how you look at it. They have got us by the balls with this fossil fuel of diesel and gasoline and the alternatives are prohibitively expensive. Hydrogen and electric both have to have infrastructure to work and it isn't there. I use my equipment only on my farm and don't hire out so I don't have to worry so far but even the red fuel here is almost the same price as the regular stuff. All this is doing is driving inflation up and the government doesn't care because they just feed off of our misery(taxes).

This is pretty much my thinking for the small kit I run. But for bigger kit, I cant see it being a practical solution?

Never could understand why a war that has nothing to do with us, effects our fuel prices. Was it like this during the gulf wars ?

It's a stealth tax
Here in Germany we have got like 4 or 5 taxes on fuel.... Just ridiculous.

If it was truly a green initiative, they could have kept the rebate on HVO and GTL.... But they didn't - its purely money making.
