    Well done Ollie. I’m in this situation . Loads of courses taken over the years, gas safe registered, was Elecsa registered , NNLW asbestos, SSSTS, various c&g’s, and a HND from a previous career and I’m gonna struggle to get a CSCS card , but a kid out of college with no experience but has the NVQ can get one no problem at all. Nothing against them but if your not a youngster your pretty screwed.

    Just came across your videos today and this topic ruffled my feathers as it clearly does yours and most other guys. Having done Formwork pretty much all my life, I delayed the whole CSCS thing as long as possible when it came in and took substantial jobs without it for maybe 6 years, until I couldn’t. Now, I’ve had a guts full. You’ll soon need a ticket to scratch your arse. I’m out!
    I know it’s easier said than done and all principals come at a cost but we’ve let these criminals push us around and rob us blind. As a whole we all need to say no! Having all the tickets and NVQ’s in the world doesn’t make anyone and good or competent, which is even more with dangers of operating plant. You can either do it or you can’t. But if we stuck together these parasites would have no alternative to disappear and we’d be left to do what we do without subsidising them to sit on their ass at our cost.
    Long winded I know but it makes me savage! 😡

      I couldn’t agree more, but as the big firms are also basically on the payroll in effect as they can claim their levy back against training, none of the big players want to make a stand.
      Sadly we will see a lot of people leave the big site work this year, pushed out by this change in policy. Safe today but not tomorrow - it’s pay to play disguised as safety

    Good one Ollie 👍
    I think after doing the same job for over 30 odd years should stand to some sort of reference of your ability on site
    After all there is absolutely no young people if a not a few going to any trade on site as past 8 to 10 years
    And now there are looking 50 year old plus trades people to go and do NVQ on thing that they have been doing for years
    Mad the construction industry is getting 😡😡

      Great point Ray, the economic benefit to this is negative, not in the sense of card charge (although its a rip off) but to the construction industry as a whole, my forty years are up, we never had these problems, yes we had idiots who claimed they were trades, good foreman oust them very quickly, the industry has lost sight is education, trades teach trades, a good carpenter will pass on his knowledge freely if the apprentice is keen, same as all the other core trades. I find this whole thing belittling to qualified tradesmen, forcing them with a dumb paper exercise to prove there worth, and to earn there living, outrageous, I truly feel sorry for the youngsters today who want a career in an industry that can provide a good return, I agree with Ollie some of us weren't Einstein at school, but that didn't make me an idiot, I grafted and did very well, its easy to say, but the only thing you can do is rebel against it , ask mp's, councillors, etc why the difficulty in me earning a living, you do have individual "right's" and they must listen to you, your a generation of wiz kids on the computer, set up a "construction" thread that's attractive on this topic, for whatever time you have left bang on the door hard, good Luck Mark

    I've held a manager's card for longer than I care to remember, renewed it this year and as you rightly said, it will expire next December and to keep it I will have to do a NVQ7 at a cost of £3500, to keep it short , well done the CITB, 35 years of experience leaving the industry next December, as I will not pay it !!

    I had a black cscs card they call managers and professionals , i cant renew it because i dont have an nvq. Im a site manager 49 years old and im not doing an nvq level 6 at my age when i have years of experience and an smsts cert. I emailed the construction leadership council that came up with this idea , they are not interested. I did say that now im going for an operatives green cscs card. I know a lot of people are doung tbe same , i sooke to course providers and labour agencies. So on small to medium size projects the site manager will have an operatives card instead of a managers card. These size projects or companies dont necessarily ask for a cscs. I have just started a £2 2 million project and they are letting me go ahead with a green operatives card. Only the tier 1 contractors will insist on black cards. I also have to do a one day h and s course to apply for my green card. Its complete madness. And i can only assume its about money , so im finding it hard to take this industry seriously nowadays.

      I made this video to make people aware of the approaching deadline. But its turned into something more than that. Sadly, so many people are either leaving the industry, or finding work arounds to keep working. None of it though has improved safety, productivity, or upskilled the workforce in any meaningful way. The representatives that watch over our industry have truly lost their way, and your story, along with so many others proves that. I wish you the best of luck navigating through all this.

    CPCS was always just a money making scheme, You don't get out of bed and forget how to operate a machine. H&S has become a joke and I am glad I left operating plant in 2016. I am now a LGV class 1 driver and love it. Operating plant should be based on ability and experience not a piece of plastic. I had 360 wheeled and tracked, 180 and articulated dumptrucks and am fully experience on all of them. I bet I could hop on a machine now like I could in 2016 and be as good as I was. There other industries that don’t have this much regulations n do question government decisions as drive tractor here in Australia you have to have truck license base on weight n size yet there’s no safety requirements like air brakes to be fitted to trailer implements.

      There is some online training and exams, which consists of mock exams and then a final one via Webcam which has to be in a pretty much empty room done via their online website which is 40 or 50 questions which is similar to the one at the test centre, once you have passed this you will be able to go onto do your official test (at the test centre) which will be the HS&E Test for Operatives and then you can apply for your new card.
      I have just done these courses but some reason straight after I did the week long SMSTS course, which I honestly struggle to make it make sense.
      Did the SMSTS but still had to do a Level 1 after 🤨
      Anyway, Hope this helps all the best

    Do you have to have these NVQ’s for private use of owned machine on your own land? Not operating machines for paid work?

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well no is the simple answer. Anyone can buy a machine and drive it as you could a car on private land.

      Does your card have the letters IA after the qualification listed on the back? If it does then you have a problem. If it doesn’t then you are fine, you can always call the CSCS helpline and they will confirm if your not sure

    As someone wanting to apply for a red card ASAP with no prior experience, what is the best course of action with the cards being phased out after December???

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The cards arent being phased out. The "grandfather rights" is but not the actual card itself. As someone looking to apply for a red card, you want to contact your local CPCS training center and they can evaluate how much experience you have operating the machine you want to do the test for. They can then advise you on the length of training required to get you up to speed to pass your test and gain the red card.
      After two years, you will then have to complete an NVQ to gain your blue card which lasts for 5 years. (as those of us who previously had a card but without an NVQ under the grandfather rights scheme are also having to do.)

    I'd love to know who owns these organisations...better still i would like to know who the underwriters are...its a racket being charged to work. The money most probably goes to some snotty nosed rich kid in london whos just left eton or Cambridge (jobs for the boys made up). Corgie and CITB was another racket... who gets the money? and where does the money go? Im a scaffolder time served 10 times over and now i used to be a scaftolder if i don't cough up £600.

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I couldn't agree more. I made this video to inform lads that in a few months time they might not be able to work on site anymore but its raised more than a few eyebrows as to why the scheme has gone down this route. Clearly it has nothing to do with safety - your safe on site this year but not after December.... need to pay money to get an NVQ to be safe now..... yeah right!
      But until the big contractors start seeing what a racket the card system has become, we are forced to play their silly game to their rules.

  • @ruthbees7214

    It's all about jobs and generating money. You will see training schools set up job creation. Same as hgv driver card take time off work couple of hundred quid every couple of years. Do it all over again makes you wonder how the working man and woman can keep absorbing ridiculous costs that are rolling on for all their careers. Doesn't give any incentive for young people to have a job in the in both industries.

      when you get too skilled, you cost more, so this is how you reset the pay grade to a price they only want to pay... there are no skilled shortages either, that is just a campaign to draw in new fodder to provide basics, to keep pushing along projects at minimum wage.

  • @MarkRutter-f1f

    I see it from both sides but to be honest. I went to college for 3 years to get my NVQ 3 so why should it be handed to someone who couldn't be bothered.

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I meant it more for people who have been in the industry for their entire lives - I don't think their lack of qualification should stop them from working. As we both have done an NVQ, you will no doubt agree that we have learnt more on site than we have from the NVQ - although its an important first step, and no bad thing to have behind you. It certainly helped me establish my experience when I was starting out. But sending guys in their 40's and upwards back essentially to college to get an NVQ that their experience far outweighs just seems pointless to me - and discriminatory, as an NVQ wasn't around when they started.
