    Good afternoon! Thank you for your “Tip of the Day”, I learned a lot of new things, several questions arose on this video, when measuring the end mill, your mill moves by the radius, this does not happen on my machine, the end mill is measured in the center, how to make it move? when measuring the "Shell Mill", the cutter is shifted along the "Y" axis, but it is necessary that it is shifted along the "X", how will this be achieved?

    Hi Mark, I have noticed that the tool offsets table has only for digits after the dot, but it will read and correct at least up to 5 digits, is there a way to display the 5th digit on a HAAS next generation control?
    Thanks for your videos, I find them extremely useful.

    Hey Mark, your videos are the reason why I convinced my boss to order a Haas as our very first CNC mill, despite the fact, that we are living in a country, which is heavily occupied by Siemens and Heidenhain (Germany). The VM6 was just delivered and I'm already doing all kind of funny things with a hacked Autodesk post (using it as a lathe, screw driver, etc.). When hand jogging, I would love to have tool length compensation being added to my current Z under the Positions tab or somewhere on the NGC's display. Any idea how to do this?

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      PieceMaker - Thanks for the comment. I just got an email from the guys over at Autodesk, reminding me that they can write all of this tool probing right into their Post, so it probes the tools automatically if they are defined in Fusion/Inventor HSM. Have fun with the new machine. If you come across any topics for videos, as you set things up, send them to us at TOD@haascnc.com. - Mark, Haas-Tip-of-the-day.

    At GE we used a square tool probe that was attached to the back of the enclosure not on the bed to prevent chips & coolant from it. Some of the tool probes had enclosures that opened & closed to prevent any chips, coolant or damage to the tool probe. Also, all of the tools lengths & diameters were inputted into the part program by the engineers to prevent any operator error if the operator had to input all those values themselves. And, all of the tools should be put in the tool changer in the order that they are used.

    Great video Mark. What would also be very helpful is to learn how to set a tool length offset the old fashioned way in the next gen control. Sometimes you might not be able to get the probe somewhere and just want to lower the tool and tough off on paper or something.Thanks again

      Thanks killerdoxen. I just watched it. For some reason I thought that video was the old control as all the Z values in the work offset page on my Next Gen have a positive machine Z listed. So I think I;ve got it now. I'll try it out. Thanks again

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keith - The video that killerdoxen linked to is the closest thing we have (th-cam.com/video/uNjMIIRttFE/w-d-xo.html). We try and keep people from mixing-and-matching tool offset setting methods. We should probe all of the tools, or set all of the tools manually. When probing, our tool lengths are the positive length of our tools from gage line to tip. When setting manually, the Tool Offset is a negative value, from the tip of the tool (when at the workpiece/touchoff point) to the machine home. Thanks for the comment. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

    One thing that does not compute: say I want to use a tool with two different wear compensations to mill two different features. Say the tool is T4 and I want to use G41 D4 for one feature and G41 D45 for another. When I do the later, as explained in this video, D45 references two columns on row 45, the Diameter Geometry and Diameter Wear. Why both? I'm working with T4, so I want the D45 wear to be applied to T4's probed Geometry Diameter value.

      Asad Wasi -We can’t mix probed and not-probed tool offsets, so if a tool is so small that I need to touch it off manually, I will use a unique Work Offset (G55…) that wasn’t probed as well. I will dip my finger in coolant, or oil, wipe the part to make it reflective, and jog the tool down to the part on the smallest jog increment while looking at it through a magnifying loupe. When the tool and the tool’s reflection meet, I will press Tool Offset Measure. We have a brief piece of video that shows this (in reverse) here: th-cam.com/video/lwujoXvgGzA/w-d-xo.html . Charmzee - We call the new software NGC, or Next Generation Control. Haas writes all of their own Control Software, so you’ll only find it on Haas Machines. If you press the Parameter/Diagnostics button, on your Haas Mill/Lathe, and look for the Configuration or System tab, you’ll find the actual Software Version number for your machine. Classic Haas Controls have software versions like M18.12B, or L11.17, while the NGC versions look like “100.17.000.1017”. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

    I am old timer who never had to use nor did I learn cnc lathe as i did moldmaking and toolmaking. Of course I used and use manual lathes but I note on the cnc lathes there is no information about setting tool heights--as in ZERO. Where can I learn about tool heights for haas cnc lathe?? I did note trying to search it out that on a cnc lathe you dont just put any tool in you want like a manual lathe and the tooling and holders have to made FOR THE EXACT LATHE..am I getting close?.. I did stumble across some blog strings that mention shims under the toolholder and that if they are missing the height can be way off (too high).. Tool height is very important on lathes--I do not understand the tooling or why tool height cannot be set--and not one youtube or other video mentions a word about it-- where can I start? I am semi retired and work as I can and first thing is they want cnc lathe experience am at a new job with haas lathe but just as an operator-they dont train and they also are not knowledgable about tool heights or complex setup of the machine. One tool was squeeling which they couldnt solve and I told them the tool is way too high. I drew a picture but had no idea how to check or fix it nor did they PLEASE HELP. Why is tool height never mentioned on a cnc lathe is it a secret? thanks

    What is the smaller diameter endmill anyone has touched on this setter?

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Panzerclaws claws - I’ve set .002” (.05mm) diameter, 15° included, carbide single-lip cutters with the Tool Setting Probe. I would always touch off the small cutters manually by using a Loupe, bringing the tool down above the part until I could see the tip of the tool meet its reflection on the part, non-contact. Over time, I gave in and just started trusting the tool probe. I haven’t had any problems with tool breakage. Maybe we can get some comments from others with small-diameter-tool experience with probes. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

      Nice, I'm a micro machinist and I use .001-.010 dia. endmills on a daily basis. I use the Blum laser for tools not smaller than .002, and sometimes depending on the setup a microscope camera to do what you used to do with the loupe;). I just purchased a VF2-SS with the tool setting option and was wondering about that. Thank you Haas.

    una pregunta?? despues de medir una o varias herramienta me dara el diametro real de la herramienta si mi herramienta tiene mayor o menor diametro ese diametro que dio lo tengo que usar en mi programa CAM o la maquinas haas automaticamemte compensa la diferencia de diametros ???

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joel Alonso - When probing an endmill, we can use “Length and Diameter Probing (Rotating)”. This cycle will set the Diameter Geometry, as well as the length of the tool. Exactly. If your program uses Cutter Compensation (G41) then your tool will be adjusted to compensate for its real diameter. If my 12mm endmill is actually 11.5mm, it will set the diameter as 11.5mm on the Diameter Geometry column. Note that if you programmed your tool as a 12mm endmill (CAM), and it is actually 11.5mm, then you would typically need to enter -.5 onto your Diameter Wear Column, to adjust for the .5mm that your tool is under sized. We have to choose to let our CAM system compensate for the endmill, or let the control do this, there is a setting in your CAM system to allow the machine to do it, then you could just let the probe set your tool to 11.5 and run, instead of needing to enter the “-.5mm” manually. We normally probe our tool (sets as 11.5mm), then subtract the programmed tool diameter from the Diameter Geometry, entering -12.0, which will leave the -.5 we need on-screen. This would be a good topic for another video. Thanks for the comment. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

    Having worked in the aerospace prototype world for a decade and the luxury of working with Mori Seiki mills that entire time. It pains me so much to see offsets so regularly done this way.
    Every tool should be set via the distance to the table in negative values (z-). work offsets should be (z+) positive. No one should ever need to care what distance the tool is from some stupid arbitrary point from the spindle.

    Doing tool touch offs while away from the machine is a dangerous practice in my opinion.

    Am I missing something here, why would you build a machine that can calculate the tool diameter, yet not apply it...makes no sense to me. SO, you have to take the calculated diameter, and enter it into your CAM software...stupid. Your lathes will take the tool offset you enter and use it, why wouldn't your mills do the same??

    Mark, this does not work. MDI will tell you that you “Tool 2 is missing a Length and Diameter greater than zero”. I just tried. It should work the way you say it does. Video below explains.m.th-cam.com/video/bY_DKLeGyNs/w-d-xo.html

      Tim Homan - The issue you described in your video has been corrected (requiring more info than needed to
      probe certain tools). We can upgrade your software and get you taken care of
      for that. We are, however, making some cool changes to Probing from the Work
      Offset page, and those changes will be released soon. If it were me, I’d wait
      for those changes, and then upgrade my machine just the once. Either way I’ll
      be sure to contact you when that software update (Work Offset Probing page) is
      out. Thanks for the comment, it will be useful for folks that have come across
      the same thing. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

    Always remember to repent of your sins (sin is transgression of YAHUAH’S LAW: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy) And Have Belief On YAHUSHA HAMASHYACH. HE Died and Rose three days later so that you can be forgiven of your sins!
    HE Loves you! Come to HIM!🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

      Erik - Hahh. I didn’t realize I mentioned my full name in this one. “Terryberry. Yes, spelled just like it sounds. Yes, that’s my real name. No, my wife’s name isn’t Mary”. Lol. Thanks for the comment. - Mark Terryberry, Haas Tip-of-the-day.
