You might think that every CNC Machinist with 5+ years of experience should have at least a solid grasp of all the techniques shown here. The honest truth is, don't get your hopes up. If you are hiring, and you come across someone with this level of competency, that person might be a good candidate to be a shop lead . Not even kidding.

@@millomweb Elaborate? Well, I don't know. Everything. I see machinists my shop hires and people in youtube comments all the time who don't understand simple concepts. There's a video out there explaining trigonometry that is full of comments about how people don't know trig or they're just learning it at 60 years old and/or 10 years of machining. It blows me away, I use trig every day, I can't imagine what machining without knowing trig looks like. My shop hired a grown man post-military career, and I overheard him asking the boss: "So which one of these little marks is 5/16?". That's what this video reminded me of, the day 1 simplicities that people need to look up videos for.

Military generally have zero intelligence - they want people to follow orders, not use intelligence and query everything. The thing you've probably not realised with the 5/16 example - although they've proved they've no clue about '5' but it's most likely, they'd no clue about the 16 either. On the dumb scale, as an 11 y/o, I saw a bloke trying to inflate a tyre - with the valve cap still on. As for trig, it's not needed for a lot of lathework. A fair bit of any machining is linear and angles are all 90 ;)
Here we have a young female on a CNC machine, a rare sight, doing a video to inspire the younger generation that they too can learn something great and this comment section is riddled with typical fools who think they know it all. Nobody knows it all, you become better with time and dedication. No school or degree can teach you everything when it come to real world experience. Instead of arguing what method or machine is better give this young woman some tips and inspire her to keep learning and let her know how amazing this trade is. Pablo Casiano for so long my parents pushed college education (with which I have no problem) but I never felt like I needed to go to college to do what I wanted to do. I am a huge supporter of trade schools now after attending one myself! As a younger generation in the workforce I am so glad that I chose a technical school over college education.
But in real life your boss is like "here you have some ukrainian, teach him how to work on CNC" and he will return 30 minutes later asking if he already can work on it. 🤣🤣 It takes months to learn it.🤣 I really envy those people who don't have to program anything and they can just select program and put material there, that would never work in furniture factory where almost everything is atypical.

@Nick Holden they do weilding as well where I'm at. Don't know much about it cus I don't work in that section but I learned the basics in the cnc machine how to find a center or a corner and how to program it in to the machine so that could be it's starting point. Reference it and add programs in to it. It's going pretty smooth and easy to learn. Honestly it depends on the ppl teaching u and how well they can explain it to u. I did brake on of the drills on the cnc machine on Friday. I was about to go home and I was in a rush tried to bring up the z axis but still had it on the x axis so I send the drill straight into the bar lol no one knows yet so we ll see tomorrow how that goes hahah I wish u the best just be patient with yourself u will get it. That's the best advice I can give u I'm still learning and I do get irritated with myself most of the time...

I just came out of prison did 7 years as well so it's crazy my manager is a a dude of 27 when I'm 33 and he's the one teaching me everything but I show him that respect cus he's patient with me and I'm really trying to pick this up...

Excellent video. She obviously knows the tech inside and out to be that comfortable discussing it. I've been a machinist / programmer / production engineer, for 40 years and am always happy to see young people learning the trade. Here are some tricks that you may want to try, to make your life easier in the future, when machining plastics. To get rid of the plastic chip wrap, reduce the spindle speed on the drilling can cycles. Change the G81 to G83, or G73 , add a "Q" value to the can cycle to break the chip, and if all else fails, at the end of each drilled hole cycle, have the tool rapid up above the part 2.000", insert an M4 (stops and reverses the spindle) in the program. With the 1,000 psi coolant blasting on the tool, it'll spin the clump of chips off the drill. Then you can insert an M3 to stop the spindle, and restart it in the clockwise rotation, and move on to start drilling the next hole. That way the flutes of the drill will be free of any melted stock when it starts the next hole, and the chips won't build up above the flutes of the drill and be burned into the top of the part. Hope these tips help you in the future. Take care.
Excellent and precise training! Loved it! I started off as a machinist then started using CAD/CAM back in the early 80s. Fast forward now, I have been selling and supporting CAD/CAM for over 40 years. Watching her provide this training was awesome! Wish more instructors were this precise and talented. She is the best CNC instructor that I have ever seen.
Hello and thank you for your question. There was CAM software that I believe was called "BeachCAM". It ran on early Apple computers. I used it in the mid 1980s to program a Fadal in a machine shop that I worked for "Malone CNC". My boss and I would come in early twice a week to use the software to program parts. Oh yeah this is the best video by far on CNC machining on TH-cam. Been searching for days and all I'm seeing is generic overviews and general best practices. Great stuff.
Advise for newbies: 1: Your tool length offset may be off by the thickness of the paper, this may be important when manufacturing more precise parts. You can correct this by selecting your length offset in the tool offset menu and typing (for example) -0.002 or whatever the thickness of your paper is. 2: You can press the "cancel" button on the program menu to then be able to switch between the machine files and the usb device without scrolling all the way to the top. 3: You can search for a program by typing in the program's number or file name and pressing the down arrow, or the up arrow if you believe you have already scrolled past it. Keep in mind this will take you to the nearest file that matches what you typed, so you may have to hit the up or down arrow again to continue searching if files have similar names or you didn't type in the full name/ if there are more iterations. 4: You can can clear all work and tool offsets faster in the work/tool offset page by pressing "Origin" and selecting one of the options that appears. This only works for the offset menu you have currently highlighted. You should only do this if you are certain that you will not lose anything important like probe tool offsets when doing so. The old machines may have used "F1" then "edit" or in the reverse order at some point, but I cannot recall. 5: lazy way to clean a machine is to turn the coolant on and have it wash the bed as you hand jog.
#1 is very important. For most hobbyist machining, using the paper trick is fine. When you perform precision machining though, a piece of paper must be compensated for in your work offsets. I often have to comp my tools due to the change in ambient temperature when machining to very small dimensions and tight tolerances.

This girl needs her own machining channel. A kind and friendly person like her could really spark an interest for young girls that might not know what they want to work with as adults. And the manufacturing industry really needs more females overall, not for filling quotas like a lot of the older crowd would have you believe, but for the sake of innovation. I am a level 2 operator and I needed to learn how to set up jobs and my company didn't really care. I could run 2 machines at a time when I left. Idk if that's good or not but I learned a lot while I was there I think.
I've seen a few videos that made me wonder what I was doing for years on CNCs , or what they were. Not this one though, Very clear, and as machines differ a fair bit, pretty much universal and great for anyone starting out on CNC machining. Well done.

This video will be almost perfect for my CNC Machinist program. Sara did a fantastic job presenting this material. Her explanations are clear, concise and quite correct in technique. We use positive TLO's rather than the negative TLO's Sarah set in the video, but not every shop uses a Tool Length Presetter. Thank you very much for making this material available to learning institutions.
Everyone should start on a manual, safer, cheaper, learn the principles then go to cnc. Seen many kids that paid over $20k for a machining degree and not know how to square a block

Ever CNC machine has its own control panel and machinalism, different types of machines and modern of which years they has been built. I had operated CNC mailing machine, long time ago, after that I used to operated many different types of CNC brake press, turret press, and plasma cuttings machines, mostly Breqkpress is my professional. I have know setting and programming, but I have not touch for years after I was doing different types of job, especially. But I had a lot knowledge and experiences about CNC machines and other machines systems, therefore I am so easy to learn and performing my duty. Very well. Now I have accepted new opportunities that as machine operator to operate CNC mailing machines, drilling machine and Auto saw machine. So far I have no problems at all, I have learn whatever my supervisor or leading hand person who has responsible and duty to teach me how to perform and to be trained as soon as possible, to stand myself in order to carry out perfect works duty and responsibilities. Yesterday's there a few problems was occurred regarding about CNC mailing machine, after I had done all my necessary Judy to be carried out. My leading hand trainer, he as seem to be attempted to change some program from original one. I believe sincerely he is not good at enough for CNC programming. But he has know very well all there machines as like his own babies. But CNC programming is very complicated and the response and reaction from machines toward its own command control coding is very sensitive, so we all have to be aware and careful. Unless we are not CNC programmer professional yet. I am so happy to be working these knowledgeable and skillful personal with this CNC machines center. Let e continue our problems, that the tool picking and changing hands machinalism, has been built with its own coding orders, after he try to stop that hand before its has been it's own, cycle of operations, that has was stuffed so we had to shirts the machine days, waits for technical person. Today that problems was successful carried out just a few minutes, by machines engineer. But I was far away from that machine be a Co use I was operating there other CNC cutting machine Now I have know how to start and shutting and understanding about g-coding common and control system, but I still long way to learn. But I believe myself I can do that if I have been achieved right amount of times and my leading hand and company supports. I have no problems at all. Please explain me how to fix that CNC mailing machines has that as it was stopped on the way to picking up it's own commended tool from tools stock. I'm replying to your post as its recent, lots of comments but none picked up on the slightly incorrect method used to tighten the work piece and as your just starting off....she did everything right but failed to retighten the vice after tapping down the work piece with a mallet; meaning if the work piece is still free to move with light taps of a mallet then its not securely clamped! Stopped watching after approx 2 mins as I'd end up crtiqing the whole video!
I hope to see more and more young women take on this task of programming CNC's and being on the shop floor. Great job on the video. Plus, HASS is a very easy machine to operate.
11:40 if you're lazy like me, reverse the spindle so the tip of the edge finder climbs toward you and it's easy to see. You won't always have the option of getting your face in the right place.
Great video, but I'd like to help You to become more efficient. I suggest setting all "tool lengths" on a common place, not on Your rough part. Example, top of vise with gage block, or a block setting on machine table of the same height as vise. Then set Z0 on your rough part, using only one of the tools in Your program. Then on Your next job, You won't have to load and jog all the tools to set their lengths again. "tool lengths" are stored in Your tool data, Z0 is stored in Your G54, G55 etc.
Yep, exactly. It's hard for me to post criticism of such an excellent video, but setting your X/Y/Z work offsets is completely independent of tool offsets.

Retired toolmaker with 45 years in the trade. I ran lots of machines and the Haas controller is one of the best. She explained it well.

This girl needs her own machining channel. A kind and friendly person like her could really spark an interest for young girls that might not know what they want to work with as adults. And the manufacturing industry really needs more females overall, not for filling quotas like a lot of the older crowd would have you believe, but for the sake of innovation. The more people with differing approaches and methodology the easier it gets for companies and whole industries to innovate their products and manufacturing processes. Keep up the good work👍

@@DerickGMan you're talking about once you become a programmer or actually design stuff for companies right? I am a level 2 operator and I needed to learn how to set up jobs and my company didn't really care. I could run 2 machines at a time when I left. Idk if that's good or not but I learned a lot while I was there I think.
I have worked for 40 yrs in shop in various functions. This is a well explained tutorial.

I've seen a few videos that made me wonder what I was doing for years on CNCs , or what they were. Not this one though, Very clear, and as machines differ a fair bit, pretty much universal and great for anyone starting out on CNC machining. Well done.

This video will be almost perfect for my CNC Machinist program. Sara did a fantastic job presenting this material. Her explanations are clear, concise and quite correct in technique. We use positive TLO's rather than the negative TLO's Sarah set in the video, but not every shop uses a Tool Length Presetter. Thank you very much for making this material available to learning institutions.
Barry Young positives can get you in trouble. I prefer negative. If someone forgets the negative, the machine alarms instead of crashing.

Everyone should start on a manual, safer, cheaper, learn the principles then go to cnc. Seen many kids that paid over $20k for a machining degree and not know how to square a block

Thanks for clear explanation about how to setting up CNC mailing machines and shutting down. Ever CNC machine has its own control panel and machinalism, different types of machines and modern of which years they has been built.
I had operated CNC mailing machine, long time ago, after that I used to operated many different types of CNC brake press, turret press, and plasma cuttings machines, mostly Breqkpress is my professional. I have know setting and programming, but I have not touch for years after I was doing different types of job, especially. But I had a lot knowledge and experiences about CNC machines and other machines systems, therefore I am so easy to learn and performing my duty. Very well.
Now I have accepted new opportunities that as machine operator to operate CNC mailing machines, drilling machine and Auto saw machine. So far I have no problems at all, I have learn whatever my supervisor or leading hand person who has responsible and duty to teach me how to perform and to be trained as soon as possible, to stand myself in order to carry out perfect works duty and responsibilities.
Yesterday's there a few problems was occurred regarding about CNC mailing machine, after I had done all my necessary Judy to be carried out.
My leading hand trainer, he as seem to be attempted to change some program from original one. I believe sincerely he is not good at enough for CNC programming. But he has know very well all there machines as like his own babies. But CNC programming is very complicated and the response and reaction from machines toward its own command control coding is very sensitive, so we all have to be aware and careful. Unless we are not CNC programmer professional yet.
I am so happy to be working these knowledgeable and skillful personal with this CNC machines center.
Let e continue our problems, that the tool picking and changing hands machinalism, has been built with its own coding orders, after he try to stop that hand before its has been it's own, cycle of operations, that has was stuffed so we had to shirts the machine days, waits for technical person.
Today that problems was successful carried out just a few minutes, by machines engineer. But I was far away from that machine be a Co use I was operating there other CNC cutting machine
Now I have know how to start and shutting and understanding about g-coding common and control system, but I still long way to learn. But I believe myself I can do that if I have been achieved right amount of times and my leading hand and company supports. I have no problems at all.
Please explain me how to fix that CNC mailing machines has that as it was stopped on the way to picking up it's own commended tool from tools stock.
I will in future continue to to study and watching useful videos clips from UTube.

I'm replying to your post as its recent, lots of comments but none picked up on the slightly incorrect method used to tighten the work piece and as your just starting off....she did everything right but failed to retighten the vice after tapping down the work piece with a mallet; meaning if the work piece is still free to move with light taps of a mallet then its not securely clamped! Stopped watching after approx 2 mins as I'd end up crtiqing the whole video!
@@peteturner8493you can tighten a vice as much as you want and you will still be able to move it by tapping it down with a mallet, she did great

Having used a similar (VF-2YT) machine i will say this is a great primer for actual CNC Mill operation.
I teach CNC on a HAAS Mill , what an excellent video covering all the procedures to set up a part! Great Job

No you can't because where ever you start must be a G54 if not you will crash machine.

11:40 if you're lazy like me, reverse the spindle so the tip of the edge finder climbs toward you and it's easy to see. You won't always have the option of getting your face in the right place.

12 months ago, I wouldn't know what an edge finder was ! If the tool started taking a cut, we'd found the edge !

Great video, but I'd like to help You to become more efficient.
I suggest setting all "tool lengths" on a common place, not on Your rough part.
Example, top of vise with gage block, or a block setting on machine table of the same height as vise.
Then set Z0 on your rough part, using only one of the tools in Your program.
Then on Your next job, You won't have to load and jog all the tools to set their lengths again.
"tool lengths" are stored in Your tool data, Z0 is stored in Your G54, G55 etc.
If she's good she'll realize that way on her own. I wish she knew how inaccurate and dangerous it is setting tools with paper
Yes Joseph, and use work offset, then you do not need to set all tools for next job :) But she was a student by the look, so she did great!
Yes, also might chip carbide cutters touching top of part.
Yep, exactly. It's hard for me to post criticism of such an excellent video, but setting your X/Y/Z work offsets is completely independent of tool offsets.
