  • The Battle of Brunanburh is as deserving of recall as the iconic Battle of Hastings. Fought during the infancy of a united England, King Æthelstan (the first to take the title "King of the English" in 927 AD) fought a coalition of kings, with defeat spelling the possible breakup of the newly united kingdom of England.
Æthelstan was the grandson of King Alfred the Great, conqueror of Danish York and arguably Lord of most of Britain in his time. In this brief video, we cover his accession, life and the Battle that would mark his reign.

Brilliant and engaging storytelling. Awesome channel. I'm working my way through your catalogue, and every single story is enthralling and full of human detail that really shines a light on and enriches these "dark age" histories. Love your work mate. Thank you.

I’ve often wondered about the importance of the battle, certainly as people from all over Britain were fighting it seems important.
Yet the fight was mainly to re-establish the Norse Kingdom of Northumbria, while this failed in 937, but when Æthelstan died in 939, the Norse did re-establish an independent Kingdom of Northumbria, leading to 15 years of wars with the Southerners
Good stuff by the way, some great topic choices recently

It is said that 5 Kings and 7 Earls died on the battlefield and it was the most amount of blood ever spilled in battle in British history . It truly was one heck of a Royal Rumble .

I have a plan for a video on Æthelred (probably incorporating the short reigns of Æthelberht and Æthelbald too).
Æthelred's reign is practically the story of the first years of the Great heathen Army's invasion, but an exciting one to tell.

Definitely agree this was a pivotal historical battle right up there with "Towton and those U mentioned! England was really becoming consolidated with Athelstan. Wonder why he didn't marry? Did he have any offspring? Maybe at this time because Anglo-Saxon Kings didn't necessarily succeed their fathers with the Wittan nominating instead. But whatever the case Athelstan was a force to be reckoned with! Well done! Ur friends in the States are watching and love the History of the English!

      There’s a few theories
      Some say he was homosexual
Some say he swore a vow of chastity
Some say that he made an agreement with his stepmother Ælfgifu of Kent, that her children would succeed him, hence having children himself would just lead to a war of succession

I live in a small village called Brimstage in the Wirral. Which is situated right next to the supposed battle site. I need to invest in a metal detector :)

There's a very active metal detecting group of amature historian's that have played a major roll in bringing evidence from the Wirrel . Check them out

Even at known battle sites like Naseby or Culloden youd most iikely only find musket balls with a metal detector. These places would have been scoured and picked over by the local peasants for any debris while the bodies of the slain where still warm. I suppose there would be arrowheads deep in the turf but they where made from iron, metal detectorists tend to shy away from iron objects as they are usually rusting junk and are so abundant in the ground toud never get further than a few metres across a field if you dug every bit up.

It's possible, though such videos might not manifest until next year at some point (though I'll try my best). The period is a little out of my province, but nothing a little research wouldn't cure. :)

If you do please don't refer to the Briton's as "Celts".
It's a misnomer that suggests that the Brythonic tribes where one and the same as the tribes of the Belgae, the Gaels, Picts, Amorican's etc.
It over simplifies history and panders to the warped and often sectarian view modern minds tend to view that era.
