  • Ryan and Nathan react to watching this incredible group perform this song. This has become an absolute favourite. If the horns that kick in after the keyboard solo don't put a smile on your face, I don't know how to help you.

    The entire session was recorded. You need to watch it.
    The drummer, Larnell Lewis, fly in at the last minute, transatlantic, and he learned most of the songs on the flight. He only rehearsed two of the songs before the session.

    The other keyboarder shaking his head has 6 grammys or something like that. His reaction gets me laughing every time. :D

    They are all wearing headphones because there are a zillion microphones in the room, if they were playing it through speakers in the room for the audience there would be tons of feedback.

      I worked at the studio in New Orleans where they did the second family dinner album, but unfortunately not at the time. What I can tell you though is that it's a huge pain in the ass to set up all those headphones - and I only did it for an orchestra, not for a huge band AND an audience. From finding a way to plug that many sets in to managing the chords to arranging a room like that. Tons of work. And I absolutely love when you can see the engineers freaking out in the sound room during the solo when everyone else in the room had to be cool when they were watching this dude play a once in a lifetime solo. They worked hard to make that happen, and these dudes made it all pay off. Fantastic all around.

    Points to consider:
    1. This group of incredibly talented musicians met at N. Texas State U, a mecca for jazz musicians for decades.
    2. What was on this video is what went on the album, i.e., the song was simultaneously recorded and video’ed with small audience in the Netherlands in a single take.
    3. Larnell Lewis is NOT their usual drummer; he learned the tunes on the flight over by listening to a midi file.
    4. This is probably one of the most creative and innovative groups of this century.
    5. Consider listening to “Don’t You Know” (a love song in 14/4) from the album “Family Dinner Vol. 2” which features an equally incredibly talented musician named Jacob Collier.

    This performance was on the album and DVD
    titled We Like It Here. Filmed on their European
    Tour. Great stuff. The amazing thing is the drummer was a last minute addition due to the original drummer having visa issues. He learned his parts on the flight over from the US.
    He is a master.
    Love the reaction guys, and Snarky Puppy, Vulfpeck,
    Dirty Loops and Thank You Scientist will all blow you away.

    Their earlier videos, notably the Tell Your Friends sessions, they were already performing in-studio with an audience all dialed in to the mix with headphones. Which is marvelous when you have world class musicians where “no mistakes allowed” will ensue! I’d pay a pretty penny for such an experience!

    5/4 time. Think that trumpet is 'wah, wahing' on his own without an electronic device. He is bending notes. Technique with these guys is off the chart. Between the keys and the drums on this is insanity. Has there ever been such a tight band? So great to see such greatness and listen to true MAGIC. Can't believe I did not see this review before. thanks.

    The headphones are because of all of the synths. They are all direct-in to the mixing board. They would not be audible to air in the studio.

    I enjoyed watching your reactions to snarky puppy. They have another song called OUTLIER that seems to get overlooked by the other songs from the same album. For me it's an easy top three out of there songs from the album "we like it here".

    More, more more Snarky Puppy! This whole session is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!

  • @namekendrick
    @namekendrick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, I think the headphones were more of a quality control thing to insure everyone gets a good listening experience. So many instruments in that room.
    Also, fun fact: Snarky Puppy's regular drummer couldn't make it to the session for whatever reason so Larnell Lewis, the drummer you see, learned the entire album set on the plane ride over there and had never played with them before that day of the recording. Imagine having to learn an entire album in 8 hours by just imagining yourself playing. Insane.

  • @greycane
    @greycane 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Electric instruments are patched directly into the recording mixer and not live so they don't bleed into the mics

    Snarky Puppy are the tightest band in history, really gives me Frank Zappa type vibes. For more Snarky I like 'I asked' and 'Don't you know'. From the same recording session, I believe.

    • @jarreddunlap7065

      Different session... But incredible in its own right... Don't you know is from family dinner vol 2. Jacob Collier and his use of negative harmony on synth vocals is nothing short of mind blowing.

  • @StefanHertw16

    The craziest thing about this session/album recording is that larnell (the drummer) learned the entire set on the flight to the studio. Ridiculous.

    For this performance, the band members have red headphones. Everyone else wears silver/black

    When recording in the studio literally everyone wears headphones, its not an uncommon thing. Its literally how you hear vital musical information in a room designed to deaden sound

    Hey Ryan, good to see you. Not seen you since your Genesis reactions. Just have to say Snarky Puppy is all good, pick anything from youtube to react to, however the Cory Henry keyboard solo just elevates this track a little above the others just for the excitement levels. Excellent all-round musianship from all of them though.
    Similarly good, but totally different soundwise, I would recommend Porcupine Tree or the lead singer/producer Steve Wilson's solo stuff.

    You speak as though you feel you might have said something that bears significance only to yourself. Like, it's of some importance to you and few others. When what you'd said "...I like the mix of cultures". That's a H-U-G-E and relavent statement, bro. Especially given the "cultural" climate (not racial - there's only ONE human race) of the nation.
