Star-delta motor control, also known as star-delta starter or wye-delta starter, is a common method used to start three-phase induction motors. This method reduces the starting current and torque during motor startup, preventing excessive stress on the motor and the connected power system. Once the motor has reached a certain speed, it is then switched to the delta configuration for normal operation.
The star-delta motor control process involves the following steps:
Starting in Star Configuration:
Initially, the motor windings are connected in a star (Y) configuration using the star-delta starter. The motor's three windings are connected in parallel to form the Y-shaped pattern, and the common point is connected to the neutral or grounded.
In the star configuration, each winding receives the full line voltage, but the current is reduced by a factor of 1/√3, which is approximately 0.577 times the line current.
The reduced current during startup helps in preventing high inrush current and voltage drop in the power supply.
Acceleration Phase:
When the motor is energized in the star configuration, it accelerates at a reduced starting torque. This is suitable for motors with high inertia or when the load requires a controlled start-up.
Switching to Delta Configuration:
After a specific time interval, known as the star-run time, the motor is switched from the star to the delta configuration.
The star-run time allows the motor to reach a sufficient speed before transitioning to the higher torque, full-voltage delta configuration.
Delta Configuration for Normal Operation:
In the delta configuration, the motor windings are connected in series to form a closed triangular loop.
The delta configuration provides higher torque and allows the motor to operate at its rated voltage and current, maximizing its efficiency and performance.
The transition from the star to the delta configuration is typically achieved using a star-delta starter, which is a specialized electrical device that automatically switches the motor windings' connections. The star-delta starter usually consists of contactors, timers, and relays to control the switching process.
It's worth noting that not all motors can be started using the star-delta method. Motors suitable for this type of control are usually rated for dual voltage operation and designed for star-delta starting.
