Wiring of Reverse Forward Motor Starter

This video demonstrates how to make "Reverse Forward Motor Starter". This video covers both power wiring and control wiring along with testing at the end of video using motor run status. We have used 3-phase supply from the VFD output set at low frequency so that motor rotates slowly to check the direction of rotation. Hope this video serves both tutorial value along with practical approach.

This video is older but one small thing, use motor reverse contractors. They have a bar inside them that crosses between contractor preventing both from ever being active at the same time creating a 3 phase short.

Contactor do have Normally open contact and normally closed contacts, also called as NO and NC contacts.
When contactor is switched On, NO contact gets shorted and NC contact gets open circuit.
These contacts are used in control wiring.

Motor should be 3-phase induction motor. Motor current rating should be less than contactor current rating.
Suppose motor current rating is 3 Amps. Then for Direct online starting, contactor current capacity should be 6 times. So, 6x3 = 18A.
So select contactor of 18A or 25A current rating.

Sometimes a possibility of stuck the contactor due to mechanical problems. In this method no interlock is provided to avoid phase to phase short circuit in such case. Add one NC contact and take coil supply through it, ie the supply to F is in series with the NC of R and vice versa.

Yes. NC contact of Rev Contactor in series with Fwd Contactor coil and similarly NC contact of Fwd contactor in series with Rev Contactor coil is required for electrical interlock.

@@starautomation One more disadvantage is there. No protection is provided for the motor. Two expensive contactors are used. An overload relay and 3 push button is required for this. I think the conventional circuit is better than this.

In this circuit, power contactor is not suitable for 50hp.
You should take contactor suitable for 50hp DOL starting. Use DOL selection chart to find current rating of contactor and MCB/MCCB

To change rotation of motor, we need to change phase sequence.
Both contractors have opposite phase sequence.
Other way of doing this will be to use Variable frequency drive. In this case, Contactors will not be required.
