I have watched almost all the blind auditions of The Voice (Philippines, U.S., U.K., Italy, Holland, Australia, etc.) and this is one of the BEST voices I've heard. In fact, this is the first blind audition I downloaded from TH-cam. Nice VOICE Mr. Shem Thomas!
From philippines! I really like the tone of your voice. You're really great. I've watched all your performances here in youtube and it amazed me and my niece.
He just don't know how to handle the kind of a talent and genre he is.. Its not always its no good but the handling.. Peace ✌🏻 Sorry I saw your comment I'm from the future 2021..
Wowwww definitely amazing ive seen so many auditions in any different compititions but this guy blown me away....His great SINGER and PREFORMER... He actually get my all attention when he start to sing...slowy and then to rock in roll so COOL...GOD JOB...GOOD LUCK... came from me im SHARLENE from philippines....
To Gusgusse. I think its a lack of understanding of the structure of the song. Its two voices in the lyrics. The first is the father and the second part is the son. That is why Shem has sung it this way. The father in the first part is singing in a mature measured tone advising his son. The second part is the son responding. Like all young men trying to communicate with their parents his voice is frustrated and telling his father it is time for him to let him grow as a man and allow him that space. Shem has interpreted the feelings of a growing son frustrated and almost shouting for his father to understand what it is he is saying.
***** You have to remember that Cat recorded this more than 40 years ago. This was my generation and I grew up loving his music and the culture surrounding it. What Shem has done is to bring the song to 2014. Todays young generation are more strident and vocal with their parents because this is how this generation is. Rightly or wrongly. Its this strident voice of today that Shem brings to the song. Neither version is wrong in its interpretation. Ive watched Shem a lot and he performs his songs with an understanding of lyrics quite unlike many of singers today. He tells a story in his music and actions and has to be commended for not just doing a Karaoke version. The younger generation of today will relate to Shem's version. We will probably disagree on this but lets commend Shem for not being a Karaoke singer.
***** Its so sad to say that a piece of music belongs to one generation only. Its not about commercialism. Cat Stevens is and was a remarkable singer/songwriter. However, if you asked most young people if they knew his music or understood it today, I think there would not be as many as there should be. Today we have classical music, opera, jazz etc played and performed in different ways to what they would have been originally. Even Shakespeare is interpreted differently in the modern theatre world. That is what keeps a piece of literature music etc alive, not consigned to record libraries and memories. Just because a piece of music has a different interpretation doesn't mean it is right or wrong. The music of Bach and the other classical composers is played or performed today by musicians and singers generations later, that doesn't mean that the pianist, violinist or opera singer is a karaoke musician or singer. I have seen and heard great performances today of the great songs or music from the past. Its just a different time and I am glad that Cat's music can be as relevant and enjoyed today by a different audience that when I was listening to the original. And, of course, then that listener will go to the original and see how it was sung and played then. No bad thing.
***** I think that in a sense we are saying the same thing but in a different way. Every artiste such as Shem or the thousands of others will always sing another persons song as they develop their career. Music is a universal and historical language that should pass from generation to generation. Along the way of an artistes development many of the original artistes will have sadly passed away. What a tragedy it would be if the wonderful music of the past were lost because no one continued to perform it. I think that leaving Cat's original version as it was and not doing a karaoke version as many singers do, and bringing it forward for another generation to enjoy is a salute to Cat and the songwriter he is. Every generation will have its own style of music, literature etc. Whether we agree with the newer versions or not, the important thing is that the music remains. Shem, like many others, will perform in arenas such as The Voice in order to showcase their talent and their style. They only have a couple of minutes to do that. Don't judge them too harshly. There isn't a singer out there who won't have begun their life in music by singing another singer/composers song and will perform it in their own style. I am lucky enough to have been around long enough to appreciate the bridge that is built between one generation and another to keep wonderful music like Cat's alive. Im sure that Cat performed the odd song written by another. Thats the way the music world goes. I see from your profile that you subscribe to the X Factor channel. Every song performed there will be that of another songwriter. Does that mean that none of those singers is not a legitimate artiste? Wishing you the best for Christmas and peace in the world of music and its critics ...
***** I guess I had to answer the accusation that I didn't appear to know other singers who got their success through their genuine talent of creation. I didn't know that I came across as that because I wasn't discussing that. But being the age I am, I have lived through decades of music, both listening to and buying. The list would be endless, but good examples are Dylan, Cash, Lennon and McCartney, James Taylor, Carole King, Bowie, Stones etc. Not to mention the jazz and country greats of that time. The music of good singer songwriters will survive one generation to another. All of their music is still heard today along with the current singer songwriters of this generation. Lets hope future generations will continue to perform and interpret their music. I feel strongly that music should not be elitist. It was never meant to be.
***** Im glad you smiled at the end of that comment :) However, I think you are totally wrong about contests such as The Voice being elitist. The reason why they have evolved and are successful is not just because someone at a corporate level decided that this would be a good commercial prospect. If shows such as this were full of talentless performers the shows would not survive. The public is a little more discerning than it is given credit for. You have to remember that there are tens of thousands and more excellent musicians and singers songwriters around the world who want an opportunity to showcase themselves. Unfortunately It is marketing forces that decide whether an artist is "commercial" and control the finances and opportunities that are given to them. They are looking for the "now" performer, not the artiste. It doesn't matter if the artists are performing their own original material or not. You Tube singers and those on other social media sites are snapped up by "discerning" scouts who then want to make their own monies from turning them into successful artists. An artist who is passionate about surviving in what is a commercial rat race will look for any opportunity to do that. In my day, (that makes me sound so old) there were jazz cellars, folk clubs, local halls etc., where the artists performed and the scouts went around them looking for talent. Today there are different medias and the nation and the world sees them giving the impression of instant talent and stardom. Most of the true artists today have done the "rounds" before appearing on these shows. In my opinion, if you asked a credible artist what is important to him or her, being recognised as a legitimate artist or purely winning a show like the Voice, I think you would find its the recognition of their music and talent that they are after, not purely winning the show. The show and the artist are two different identities, they come together there for very different reasons.
In fact, I love this song so much and when I saw how you sing I cried in my heart you all greetings for you and cat stevens ( Youssef islaam ) Love Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu (l)

Amazing. It was a real father talking to his son. Best of luck in the future.
Sometimes it's not always just the voice, sometimes it depends on how the singer interprets the song.
