I've every respect for Bournemouth and Brighton fans who have rallied round to save their clubs and are now enjoying deserved success . Pompey are a special club , the nation's only island city and hopefully on their way back too after being saved by the fans . Over the years we have suffered from bad to ridiculous ownership and management . We sold the club to the Eisners because they had a realistic plan and Fratton park is now being brought up to more modern standards . One thing I will conceed to Saints is they have budgeted well and developed over the years . A league meeting may only be a season away .

Don’t forget Southampton football club bailed out Bournemouth, without the Saints they would’ve gone bust. The saints fans put our hands into our pockets to donate and save them from liquidation.

Portsmouth are the Newcastle of the South, only issue is their support is generally restricted to the 10 mile radius of the city. Obviously they have supporters farther afield but it’s very much a one city club. Brighton have a huge potential catchment area which encompasses most of Sussex and many of their supporters from say Hastings Eastbourne and Worthing regard it as a Sussex club and not a one city club. For the future Saints may bounce back but they need to do it before the parachute money runs out. Bournemouth will struggle to maintain their premiership place due to ground size. Long term Brighton have the greatest potential for future success.

Thanks John, good analysis, Portsmouth are a traditional one town club, Bournemouth could fall through the divisions if they are not careful, agree about Southampton and Brighton seem to be team Sussex, just like Gillingham are as team Kent. Thanks for your comments👍🏻⚽️

Hi I did say A 10 mile radius much more and you hit Southamptons fan base to the west. Traditionally Southampton and Portsmouth have been the big Two of Southern football but money is the route of every thing now and Brighton seem to be much better ran financially and Portsmouth have had dire financial management . When you can sell one player who covers the whole cost of a new Stadium and state of art training facilities your on track.@@danielkerr4100

good video, i am a Portsmouth fan and at the moment they are doing stadium work, when the work is done the stadium can hold 21,000 people, at the moment it can only hold 17,000-18,000 people because some of the stands have wooden beams that are against regulations. the stadium can also not be expanded any further due to transport links, the local council has rejected any and all plans until a bridge from Fratton station is built. Also this season 23/24 looks very good, been to two friendlies and the youth is coming through and the signings are looking very promising, this window already 11 players have been signed. PuP

7:25 Besides Cherries are at a major disadvantage as historically many folks from Bournemouth/Poole, Dorset, New Forest have gravitated towards supporting Southampton because they were the nearest top flight team before Bournemouth scaled the leagues. You've only got to see the matchday trains leaving Bournemouth for Southampton weirdly full of Bournemouth/Poole residents wearing Saints shirts. They have a really skewed fanbase because of this. Despite being smaller (and to be be fair we revel in it) at least Bournemouth's fanbase is relatively local - hence the size of the crowds. The funny thing is all of the clubs you've featured have not too disimilar city populations, so a lot of it boils down to the history of the club consolidating a strong fanbase rather than their geographic reach.

Agree Matt, Portsmouth could be the biggest team on the south coast, if they had success and a bigger ground. The fan base is there. Really pleased for Brighton as they continually improve, and will be playing in europe this season. Also, you might or not remember that Brighton were without a ground way bac in the 90s, and they played their home games at the Gills, and still got over 2000 gates. What struck me about this video - and what a good job you’ve done, btw - is that although Pompey have the greater history, the big weaknesses are the ground and social media presence. That’s typical Pompey talk from your mate. They have won the FA cup 3 times but two of those were in the war. Because they are the biggest naval base and were situated across from Nazi occupied France, they got lots of great players playing for them who were from different parts of the country and would have normally played for different clubs. And also that meant that other clubs lost players temporarily because they were dispersed because of the war effort. Portsmouth FC massively benefited from the war in this regard, so should we really count those 2 of their 3 FA Cup trophy wins? I wouldn’t say no. So they are not a bigger club. And I think it’s disingenuous for you to put your points system together for this video, on which Southampton run away with it and then say Portsmouth are a bigger club really. interesting to see all of those stats though. Pompey are the only team in the league to have won all four divisional titles AND to have won the FA Cup at the old and the new Wembley stadiums........also the FA Cup final attendance record for the new Wembley is held by Pompey(and some other lot called Cardiff) and the attendance record for the Checkatrade cup final at Wembley is also held by Pompey( and some other lot called Sunderland!) Two English champions title wins(Southampton have NEVER won THAT) and two FA cup wins(Southampton have won it once).. I can see that your scoring system was intended to be fair and unbiased, but awarding points for social media is a bit silly really, social media should never be any kind of yardstick or measurement for anything at all, it's vague, it's uncheckable, and it's completely outside the achievements and history of the football club itself, and the figures you quoted are so open to manipulation, guesswork and different interpretation that they're really meaningless.....Pompey ARE the biggest club on the south Coast, Southampton wannabe the biggest club on the South Coast, but they're not, Brighton could be big, dare I say it, bigger than Southampton, Bournemouth are a good club, they'll always be smaller than the other three, but they're punching well above their weight and they're in the Premier League on merit........

I would say portsmouth are the biggest club imo
But in reality, it’s both Southampton and Portsmouth
And this is coming from an AFC Bournemouth fan
But one thing Southampton Portsmouth, do not realise is that they are not up-and-coming anymore
The future is Bournemouth and Brighton, as clubs and cities
Southampton & Portsmouth are historically big cities because of the dockyards the War played a huge part in this country’s history but the docks are not what they were anymore sadly.
Bournemouth and Brighton are very up-and-coming cities for business. Big universities are here. Population is growing lots of people moving there
And what Brighton have done with their stadium training ground and Academy is phenomenal
And Bournemouth new owners promising £50 million training ground that is currently being built and improving the infrastructure of the club i.e. a new stadium in Kings Park and multi club ownership where he’s got five clubs around the world and we are going to be the cherry on top (pardon. Wembley Stadium's record attendance for a football match is 89,874 (Cardiff City v Portsmouth) for the 2008 FA Cup Final.
One problem with expanding Fratton Park is that after Goodison Park goes, Fratton Park South Stand will be arguably the most important example of an Archibald Leitch stand in England, including Leitch's iconic lattice truss work. Such a historic structure I would argue should be preserved for the enjoyment and education of future generations.

Yes the dross that come in help push the Kleb up as success is achieved, but for most I believe, an even balance measure of success is best. Don't get me wrong. I think where we are now is perfecto. I just wouldn't want our fan base to turn salty likie certain Klebs when they don't win every week as they expect. Good video Matt and Saints obviously and rightly are proved to be the biggest club! However, I slightly disagree with your last point about if Portsmouth had a bigger ground they could become the biggest club. They are basically an island (as they keep telling everyone) and as such are limited by the size of the city. Therefore, if they had a 30,000+ stadium, where would the extra fans be drawn from? If outside the Premier League (where they usually are) and even if back in the Championship and doing reasonably well, they'd still struggle to get 25,000 fans on a regular basis.

I'm originally from Portsmouth but lived in Surrey for years. There's plenty of PFC supporters here and based in London, which is an easy through train from Waterloo. If we make it to the top flight again we won't have trouble drawing people in. The infrastructure around the ground is a problem, Fratton station is too small for the trains, you have to be on the front carriages to get off the train there and the footbridge from the station needs expanding and updating. The current owners are actually working on it now, it's a requirement from the city council for future ground expansion. Car parking is basically side streets or elsewhere and road networks aren't ideal but again this is all to be improved and the long term aim of the owners. On the pitch, it would be good to actually see one of the other south coast clubs win some silverware at long last! Thought Brighton would manage it last season but for that penalty shoot out..

I’m obviously biased but we are the biggest club on the South Coast.
We’ve had the best players of all the sides (Le God, Bale, Shearer, Mane, Van Dijk, Kevin Keegan, Alan Ball, Shilton, Pelle and the list goes on).
Out of all the sides (albeit not this season) we’ve spent by far and away tue most time in divisions above all these sides).
Southampton fans also donated to help save Bournemouth from liquidation, we put our hands into our pockets to donate our hard earned cash to help save them.
I will however add in, even though it pains me to say it, that Pompey could have the best fans. Playing in the Lower leagues for most of your clubs history helps keep the loyal fans and sees the plastic prem fans disappear. Now we’ve been relegated all away games on sale are sold out, next home games sold out too and season tickets at record high numbers.
