I know you're not making a big thing of it, but... How cool was that, the lady said you, Dixie, inspired her to hike! That's what I was talking about before you left. I was %100 certain people would recognize you. I guessed 3 times, you would be told "I've seen your videos" I'm sticking with that number, or more. I hope Montana's feet are better.

Dixie, through your hiking journeys and unique enthusiasm, a lot of us fans can say we know who you are. You have opened the doorway and have let us in to see you and your family, but most importantly you have taught us that Skills are cheap, but passion is priceless. In today’s workplace skills are acquired in minutes, days, weeks, or months, but passion is fought for over a lifetime. Each one of us knows how it feels to have the same talents and abilities as others, we have something in common, but no two people are the same, it is the level of passion we possess in life that separates us, and when we are passionate it is not only our presence that is felt, but our absence as well. Absence means how we are missed once we leave a certain place, the manner in which we illustrate who we are, because our attitude and conduct should impact others.
Thank you for incorporating your sense of self into the TH-cam world. I come here for you! And your lovely sister Montana as well!! Evan, from Kansas.

Hey real quick on the plantar fasciitis Dixie, it's important if one is strugling with it to NOT GO BAREFOOT at all.not even in the middle of the night to pad to the bathroom. It automatically undoes any healing you were able to affect for that day. Just get good slippers (even if you have to put insoles in them) and keep them handy.I know it's tempting to take your shoes off at the end of the day and walk around to stretch your feet after hiking but Montana should try to avoid it if she wants to heal.-All the best.

That is one good thing about the camino francés. There are usually villages every 2 to 4kms. Some people don't have breakfast until they have gotten to the first or second village (although there is sometimes a risk of the bar being closed). For straw you should use pajita (little straw). Paja is straw in the sense of hay for cattle. Paja also has a pejorative meaning of "male masterbation". You will be fluent in Spanish by the time you get to Santiago :-)

It was so wise to skip that walk into Zubiri in that condition. I've done the Camino twice. That descent and the one from Cruz de Ferro to Molinaseca are scary. It's especially true if you don't have poles. I know you are probably done with the whole Camino by now but thought I'd give you a heads up.
My skin-crawling moment was on my second Camino last year when I decided to walk with my husband and by brother (! I preferred doing it alone like my first time). We stayed at the old albergue in Trinidad de Arré. I stayed there when I walked alone 4 years earlier. Well....as we sang and chatted with our many Camino friends that evening, my brother said, "Holy crap that's a hug rat that just ran along the roof line over your top bunk!" I thought he was BS'ing me but as I turned to humor him I did indeed see a very large rat running along the top of the wall just over my top bunk. I switched beds to a lower! It was quiet that night so I found one easily. ewww.....

Good stuff, Dixie. Yes, Google Translate is pretty good for uncomplicated translations. It doesn't do such a great job with local or regional idioms, though, so it helps to have at least some knowledge of how the language works. Spanish is pretty easy for the simple, touristy things - quiero = I want; dónde está = where is; cómo se dice = how do you say...?; necesito ayuda = I need help; baño = bathroom; cuanta questa esto? = how much is that?; tienes = do you have...?; queremos ir = we want to go; no me gusta = I don't like; no entiendo = I don't understand; etc. Most Europeans learn English as a second language in their schools - it's the international language of trade and aviation. Props to Montana for soldiering on! I'm betting she'll be glad she did when it's all over. Stay safe out there. Happy Trails.

Love the videos, doing the same route in 2021, 2020 is going to be the Camino de Frances in Italy. I am obsessed with these Camino videos but not all are such high quality, yours, Chica and Sunsets, and Worldtowning have been the best so far. I found you because you had a tutorial on Backpacks and I needed to get a new one.....Serendipity I say. Have watched all your videos now. Anyhoo isn't it wierd that they have twin beds in hotels and put them close together? I found that odd. When we walked Camino de Portegues my roomamte and I would separate them if we could...LOL We also got a huge case of the giggles about the bidets when they would be so far from the toilet...like how do you get over there after? We googgled the purpose of them and really cracked up. You two have a fun and eat lots of Tortillas and cafe con leches...that is the staple Pilgrim food. Better than poptarts or ramen. Buen Camino

Have loved so many of your PCT snd other informative videos. Only watched a few of the CDT and AT so far. Each trail seems to have an essence all its own. And a unique sense of adventure due to the terrain, climate and isolation. Though I have seen various movies about this trail I didn’t realize how populated it was and how amenities are so available. Hope this makes it enjoyable for Montana. Maybe she would be game to do short treks on the PCT later to press the sense of adventure even further.

Hey Dixie, am loving your Camino series, and you inspired me to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc this summer (which I highly, highly recommend).
Many places in Europe no longer give out drinking straws automatically now (because, as you found out, they blow away, make their way into rivers, then to the sea, and then end up stuck up a turtles nose).
A sustainable alternative is to buy bamboo or metal reusable straws.

Your comments on so many people speaking English and not being able to speak the local language is so so true. It is embarrassing not to be able to speak much of the local language while just about everyone you meet speaks yours. I have so many stories of being befriended by English speakers in foreign lands. Once in rural Japan a friend and I missed the last train back to Iwakuni and started walking towards the nearest town in hopes of finding a taxi. In a matter of minutes two college girls picked us up and drove us all the way (about 40 km) back to our rooms....just for the chance to practice their English on "real Americans". As with many of the youths we met throughout the developed areas of Asia, they spoke better English than many native born Americans. We were kind enough not to torture them with our Japanese.

Try taping Montana's foot. There are various methods you can find on the net. For me, what worked is to tape an "X" lengthwise across the bottom of the foot, with a crosswise piece to help hold it in place. The foot should be in the 90 degree position while taping, as if standing.
This takes some of the tension off the plantar fascia while walking, and gives it a chance to heal. You should feel some "pull" when walking. I used regular white athletic tape...best to avoid the spray that makes the tape stick better, as it tends to take skin with it when removed.

What an amazing experience you two are having! Yes, I have European friends and they speak 4 or 5 languages. They learn as children when the mind is so flexible. I asked them how they switch so effortlessly, and they said it is like learning a new word. For example, we have several words for ‘soil’...we can call it ‘dirt’, ‘earth’, ‘ground’ , etc, and it basically means the same thing. I wish I had the skill of speaking even a second language. Maybe this will be taught in our schools someday. 👍

Fun fact! They're found in other parts of the world as well, but back in the states, Harris Hawks (the hawk the gentleman was flying that almost got macked by a car) are native to parts of Arizona, Texas, & New Mexico. Although falconry is an ancient sport who's earliest records date back as far as the 1700's, Harris Hawks didn't make their debut on the falconry scene until the 1980's. :) I'm curious if the guy was doing pigeon control or something; I use my Harris Hawks for that in California. Super effective. 👍

Hi! Just popping-in to say "Thanks!" for doing these little snippets of Camino de Santiago Trail hiking. It's on my list of Hikes to do. Sorry to hear Montana is having foot troubles, that sucks. :( I hope it resolves before long.
As for me, I'm working on knitting my first ever Sock. Currently puzzling my way through connecting the Heel to the Top of the Foot.
Socks are complex....but I like a challenge. Plus, at the end, I'll have a cool pair of spiffy wool socks. Smartwool's got some competition! ;) And, yes, they are warm Socks for getting in some Autumn & Winter hiking. :)
Take care and have fun, you two... :)

Your videos are absolutely amazing and I think what you are doing is wonderful. I am American but have lived abroad for ~1/2 my life and learned to speak 2 other languages relatively fluently. The first and most important step, though, is to just get out there and make an effort, and you are more than doing that! I have enjoyed all of your through hikes and hope to see even more of you hiking abroad in the future!

I walked the Camino in April in 28 days... and I usually suffer with planter fasciitis and had HOKKA Challenger atr5's on my feet the whole way. They are made with a huge arch support and a ridiculous amount of cushioning ...... I was averaging 40+ km every day and never had a blister or any problem at all with my feet and my pack was 13kg and more with food and water. I highly recommend these shoes for her if she wants to do more hiking !

You could get a reusable straw so you don't have to ask, and it would save plastic too!

Yes, seeing that awful video of a turtle with a straw stuck up its nose (or was it a spoon?)... It's mostly cardboard straws in the UK now.

It's not about the destination. It's about the journey.
The thing I like most about europe is the fellowship they promote. In Germany when I lived there 30 years ago they would have festivals all the time in most every town. They would open the breweries for free beer. I'm jealous that you're there and I'm not but glad you are having this experience. Some day I will do that trail as well.
If you dont have camp shoes and get the foot funk, find some fresh cow poop and put your feet in it. There's something in the poop.

So much fun y'all are having. I've spoken a smattering of foreign languages for years (Romance, or, Latin based), but I would be pretty challenged if I tried to make conversation in any of them, so don't feel bad. Just attempting to use the local language will get you much respect there. Y'all might just need a translator in some New England cities, though 😁. I grew up there, lived in Virginia for a bit, and moved back to care for my folks. Am heading to Va. for a section hike on the AT next week. Enjoy your trip!

As a British person it’s fun to see your observations about small things that are different over the pond. As for languages, you are trying and that is always appreciated I find. The British historically aren’t good at being multilingual either and is a bit of an embarrassment. Having English as a first language is the reason we don’t make more effort as most other people will learn English. It’s wrong and I’m trying to learn Spanish and French. The reason why Europeans tend to speak multiple languages is that the countries are much smaller and closer together than in the US and so knowing more languages is very helpful.
Hope Montana’s foot improves!! She’s definitely a trooper!!

Try to visit the fake cemetery called "Sad Hill Cemetery" near Burgos that was in the film, "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly." Lots of video opportunities there. The Spanish have built it up as a tourist attraction.

Couple of recommendations for you. In Astorga be sure to tour the Palacio episcopal by Gaudi. If you spend the night in Rabanal del Camino the English run Albergue Gaucelmo is fantastic and has tea and biscuits at 5:00pm. Ina Sarria don’t miss Albergue Don Alvaro. In Palas de Rei Albergue Castro and be sure to have their grilled octopus in their restaurant. In Santiago the Last stamp is a good place to stay. Make reservation several days in advance

And don't forget your credencial when you get to Finisterre, right? I stopped my first Camino in Santiago de Compostela but rented a car to Finisterre. I was totally bummed when I discovered that I could have gotten one more stamp.

I suffered the same problem during a hike, it was going through hell and back. I will recommend the next solution, to get a break in a big city couple of days no more, first thing will be for ur friend to pay a visit to a physiotherapist (because of the inflammation of the fascia) then to get a set of orthosis for her feet (that means going to see a podologist). That will ease the pain and will let her continue the trip without problems
