Oh Man, I just finished watching your entire triple crown series and I'm crying! Commenting here in hopes that you'll see this comment. Unfortunately I haven't been blessed with good health, so I watch travel and adventure channels to see things I can't see myself. Thank you so much for documenting your travels! You're an amazing person, so strong and determined. I'd like to think I'd be right out there with you, it's what I hope I'd be doing. What a great life you have. And although I've never done anything like any of your through hikes, I can imagine that post-trail depression is completely common. After you finished the CDT, I thought, oh boy, it's over..wahhh! I'm now watching some of your other videos which may seem silly for someone like me, but I like to learn! Thanks again for your channel

You’re such an inspiration! Your words about not dwelling on the negative, I needed to hear that today. I’ve had a rough couple of weeks and was starting to feel defeated. I’m active duty military and far from my beloved woods, so I watch your videos when I need my nature fix, and today you spoke to my soul:) thanks Dixie!!

Jessica you nailed it with your thoughts on the burned area. Nothing goes to waste in nature. The nutrients released back into the soil and opening of the canopy allow other species such as the beargrass and lupines as well as animal life to flourish in the long run. Hope your mom and pup enjoyed their time together in town. Happy Trails and God bless!👍

Gosh, it is so good to watch your videos again, with the new content and all. Sorry Mom and Fancy were not with you, but it is great to listen to your ruminations on what you observe. It feels like meeting up with an old friend.
And yes, seeing a landscape seemingly destroyed by fire, reminds us that Nature works on a totally different timeline than we do. Where we see destruction, Nature sees an opportunity for different plant species to have their turn in the sunlight. And I saw some young pine trees there getting ready to begin the cycle all over again. Thank you so much for these incredible videos. They are wonderful! 🏔👍❤️

I’m an avid trail runner and hiker all year around in every kind of weather from summer, fall, winter and spring. I got hooked a year ago on Altra’s ! My go to running shoe is Timp 1.5 my through hikers are Lone Peak 4 mid mesh. Super light, support and no sore feet or blisters! My day hikers are the Timp’s 1.5 . They aren’t the prettiest but my feet are my Friends on the trails! I’m always out Solo everywhere I go so comfort I will not compromise on my feet. I’ve learned a lot from watching Homemade Wanderlust so Thank You

Hey Dixie, this is my stomping grounds!
I cut my teeth in that forest starting as soon as I hit double digits and although I’ve been all over the country and world, IMO there’s nothing quite like it. And when we say “there’s no snow” in that pass we mean you’re not walking on 6 feet of snow and need snowshoes or cramp ons. 😜
I have a family of my own now and seeing a family like that traveling the outdoors together is inspiring. We’ll be doing our first family backpack this coming season (our youngest is 4 and is finally old enough to sack up) so I’m pretty stoked.
Cheers girl and keep up the great work!

Really enjoying your videos. I remember when you first started with these videos. You motivated me to do something I wanted to do for a while, hike the AT. I wish I could do a thru-hike of it, but with work and other responsibilities I just don't have the time. I live in Virginia near the AT (about 1 1/2 hours drive from me) so I do portions. I did a part for a week that I could get off work back in May. I returned nearby to a place in Virginia in July and did a place called Goshen pass in Goshen VA and it was quite the challenge (especially when your'e 50). My son went with me (he's 15) and he is working on his hiking merit badge for boy scouts. Thanks for the inspiration, motivation, and information!! I will tell you this, during the week I'm sore, tired, but mesmerized by the beauty of the AT and surrounding area, it is truly God's country out there. But, when I return to the pavement jungle of Washington DC the following week for work, I always feel refreshed and more alive then I've ever felt before. Some of my co-workers think I'm nuts, but they don't understand, you have to do it, see it, breathe it in, smell it, walk it, and then you'll see.

True enough on the fires. Those forests evolved with fire, and there is so many critters from certain insects to birds that thrive in post fire period. One of my favorite maps was one of Yellowstone that marked the 1988 fire. In the 90’s until just now, those burns where you were going spot wildlife in the backcountry. Great blog, thank you.

Being in Arkansas, I really get excited as soon as I hear that "hey y'all" in the beginning of the videos. That is exactly how I would start one when I get out on the trail. Waiting until my boss retires until I do a thru-hike, and these videos help me to learn and ease some of the longing to be out there. Thank you for making so many videos on so many topics. Love from Arkansas!

Homemade Wanderlust - You're right - it does seem like a waste sometimes to see those burned areas. Then again, fire is a natural and vital part of the alpine forest ecosystem; it's just that we humans tend not to take the long view of such things. I wish "they" would allow more salvage logging in burned timber stands - it makes a lot more sense to use the wood to produce something than to leave dead snags to fall on campers, hikers, animals, across trails, etc. Happy Trails.

I love my Mariposa pack. Living in the SE, it’s often wet when I backpack. I love the tall pocket for my tent. Keeps it out of the main pack when it might be damp or muddy, and lets me get it out to set up without having to open my main pack in a downpour. I can fit two 1L bottles in the shorter side pocket, and keep my toileting supplies and water filter in the upper pocket.

I finally found out what it’s like hiking in worn out shoes. On the PCT I wore one pair of lone peak 3.5s for the first 400 and they had another 60 or so before I started. Still had plenty of life but my feet grew so I got a pair of 4.0. I wore those for another 400 miles before I got off trail. Got home and did another 150 miles or so of weekend trips in them. Then hiked on a super sharp rocky trail and my feet were absolutely killing me the whole time. I wore them a couple of other hikes after that and the body and tread don’t look too bad but now 600+ miles on them, no thank you. There isn’t any support left and they kill me feet. Just bought another pair of 4.0s and it’s night and day. You don’t notice it slowly wearing out but when you get a new pair it’s amazing

I got my base weight down to 11lbs (15-20lbs fully loaded) and was still getting bruised at the start of hikes, so its reassuring to hear it from someone else as others kept telling me I was carrying too much weight. Either way, glad to see you doing well and hope WanderMama and Fancy feel better after some rest!

Have to admit I was a little surprised after actually seeing your pack in person. Friend of mine has one, I don’t care for the pocket configuration after seeing and holding one. Balancing my pack is something I am pretty careful about, not balancing one leads to a day of tugging and pulling on the shoulder straps and waist belt. And something that I noticed on her pack and now yours is the the rear mesh pocket gets stretched out. Maybe I’m just spoiled by dyneema and not having to worry about my stuff getting wet, after seeing her pack I don’t think that it’s going to stay dry inside after a day of getting hit with hard rain

I loved it! That was a great note to end on too. And I agree, how can burnt trees not make you sad? Helps to remind yourself that our short existence on this planet is incomprehensible to the life cycles of the many environments we hike through. Fires have been raging from the beginning, but new trees will return. Not in our lifetime, but someone's. Mother earth just got a little hair cut in the northwest, it'll grow back. And she's beautiful regardless!!

4:27 Basin Lake! The Norse Peak wilderness is a favorite of mine. Starting from Chinook Pass it makes a great weekend trip, but you can start from the Norse Peak trailhead or Crystal mountain for a day hike.
Sad about the fires; when that fire went off there was so much smoke it blotted out the sun. You would see a faint red orb, and some days we’d wake up with ash on things. This was in Tacoma and Puyallup, like 40 miles away :/

Dixie, have you been able to figure out what that back of the knee issue is? I get the same on some of my hikes and long walks every now and then. Seems totally random tho and I haven’t been able to figure out what causes it. Love your videos! Especially now that your pup is hiking with you. Mind joins me on all my adventures as well. Best hiking buds in the world. 💕🐶

I was day hiking in NH in the Whites. I found this gorgeous area with particular brilliant fall colors--found out that was a burn area!

What an inspiring ending, Dixie. Death and loss ultimately brings regeneration and life of a different kind.

I like the on-the-trail videos. Gear reviews in real time! What was it that you laced your shoes with? Was it some kind of elastic cord?

I had to rewind a few seconds...did she just say "Snow is hot lava"???!! Lolol That was hilarious! 😂 The bear grass is stunning! And all the scenery. The ending kinda reminded me of your endings with "thoughtful thoughts" on the AT. Great video!

Snow is lava is a game. Last person to get off the snow gets burnt. Could equally be the ground is lava and have to climb a tree or rock etc.

John Clements I've heard of the "hot lava" game, just not with snow. That's why I thought it was so funny. 😄

Great video Dixie! You keep mentioning the extra weight you're carrying so curious to know what your actual trail weight for these stretches is? Thanks!

I see a lot of people hiking with umbrellas instead of ponchos. Is it a weight issue or is an umbrella more efficient?
