I think the relation that Microsoft and Sega have right now is perfectly fine. Sega is doing a fantastic job at cultivating a large fanbase on Xbox without being owned by them, and all from just independently supporting Xbox making sure almost all their releases comes to their system. The Persona ans Yakuza games have been a big welcome and have done a lot to get people taking japanese games and jrpgs more seriously on Xbox and now look at what Square is doing. Sega is doing it right the way theyre doing it right now.

@@markellhawthorne2921Exactly. Which is why Nintendo didn't want to buy Rare. Rare was heading for a downfall. Plus you know all those broken Sonic games? Nintendo kept hiring their developers just to keep Sega away from the console wars. People don't know what's going on behind the scenes but when they do say something about it companies will out right deny it and erase all evidence.
Kinda like Nintendo Breath of The Wild was heavily inspired by Skyrim because of how much it sold compared to Zelda Skyward Sword now I can't find those developers interviews where they stated that.
If Xbox owns Sega we're gonna get the Sega vs Nintendo console flamewar again. That'll be hilarious. I rather have Xbox own it compared to Sony live service games.

While I don't disagree with your overrall argument, while I do enjoy the acquisition speculation personally I will acknowledge some people take it way too far or even worse make it their sole/primary personality trait which is sad (and I say that as the person who made that banner lol), despite that I do find their to be some fundamental issue's, inconsistancies or miss understandings within your arguments which I want to adress...but before I do I just want to preference this by making it clear I don't at all care about SEGA and find them to be the most mid publisher in gaming, unironically if it wasn't for ATLUS I would find Ubisoft more intresting as a publisher, regardless these are issues I noticed:
1st of all you mentioned the size of SEGA which is completely countered by the activision acquisition, while yes they were in a controversal position nothing came from it outside of a small fine and their finatials in 2021 were still increasing year over year. The exact same logic can be applied to activision yet they sold since being successful doesn't prevent you from being acquired, it just means you can likely nagotiate a better premium for your shareholders...which activision clearly did.
This is likely you not knowing but we know microsoft was considering buying SEGA in late 2020 due to a leaked email from Phil Spencer in the court case were the concerns of exclusivity are made null and void as I quote:
"Game Transactions - We will continue to sell acquired games and franchises across all game platforms. Previously unavailable titles on Xbox will be brought over to the platform for additional monetization opportunities, and future titles will no longer observe a delay of launching on Xbox"
So in other words from Microsoft's own internal plans they would keep games like Sonic, Persona, Yakuza, SMT, Sakura Wars, Bayonetta, Puyo Puyo, Virtual Fighter and so on wouldn't only be kept on all platforms but would come to all platforms day & date...they do mention subscription service exclusivity though
I want to comment on the stuff you said on rare, mainly it is rares decision not to work on Banjo anymore which makes complete sense they don't want to, all the classic rare team is over at playtonic...but I don't get why you are blaming Microsoft for that when its clearly Nintendo fault as rare wanted Nintendo to buy them but they just didn't so rare put them up for sale and Microsoft was the biggest bidder...but their were other bidders too...like activision LMAO so if you would of prefered that reality go off I guess
You bring up the laws surrounding forign companies buying Japanese companies being hard which it technically is but this is a thing with any acquisition with an outside Country as they want to protect their public security, only core industries in Japan are actually protected and then it is just standard acquisition law outside of it being guarenteed to go to a phase 2, this is why Microsoft considered not only buying SEGA but also Square Enix as revealed by the court case, because people always over estemate how hard it really is when it isn't a drastically different from any other acquisition...and your point about it now being easy cos someone like tencent hasn't is beyond weak cos the same logic could of been applied to activision or bethesda since a major USA publisher hadn't been bought yet...also the PR attempt from the FTC was basically laughed out where they just had to prove they had a likely chance of winning so for all the people saying Microsoft is close to a monopoly...court would disagree
SEGA did make a comment when asked about the leaked document and they just answer how you would expect any company to answer...aka a non answer, they said "not now" which could literally translate to we are being bought tommorow but not today lol and SEGA is currently worth about $5B so with the premium probably about the same amount as Bethesda was (maybe a little less, maybe a little more)

Why do people think large corporations buying up other companies is a good idea? It usually just results in people getting screwed and especially when it comes to games, because games becoming console exclusives that weren't previously may end up losing a lot of sales and the series may end up dying off because it is no longer as profitable as it once was.
Console exclusivity deals also also better for developers when the company that owns the console doesn't own the developer, because then the company that owns the console will give the developer a huge sum of money for a console exclusivity deal. If that company owns the developer, then the developer creates a game for a single console and gets nothing extra in return. So if the game doesn't sell as well, then the developer hurts financially and the company that owns the developer will then blame that failure on the developer, which will likely result in the cancellation of a game series that didn't meet sales expectations and possibly the dissolving of the developer if multiple games don't sell as well as the huge corporation expects, which will probably be unreasonably high.
My guess would be that Microsoft would axe at least half of the development teams listed at the bottom of that image within 5-6 years. If Microsoft were to drop them, then they couldn't continue because the company would still be owned by Microsoft and even if former employees formed a new company together, they couldn't continue to make games in a series they once created because Microsoft would now own those IPs and probably wouldn't sell them even if they never planned to do anything with them again. Atlus would probably be one of the first developers Microsoft would drop, which would be a huge shame because they are one of the very few AAA developers I still find interesting these days.

    • @ophidianmind333
      @ophidianmind333 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@felipesantos-er4kk No, the source is video game history and what I am describing has happened before. If you are leaving a comment like that, then it is clear that you aren't aware of this situation so I will give you a short history lesson. Here are some developers, some of them very influential and highly regarded in their time, who were purchased by a large corporation (EA in these cases) and then shut down by that same corporation, some just within a few years or after just having one game underperform in sales.
Some examples are Pandemic Studios (who made Star War: Battlefront I & II as well as the Destroy All Humans! games), Bullfrog Productions (who created the Populous series and also worked on the Dungeon Keeper series), Origin Systems (who created the Ultima series, which is one of the most influential Western RPG series of all time that also had a considerable influence on early JRPGs), Westwood Studios (who created the Command & Conquer series), DreamWorks Interactive (who created the Medal of Honor series), and Mythic Entertainment (who created Dark Age of Camelot).
EA also retained ownership over the IPs these developers created and they even had other developers create games in these series for less pay after axing the original developers of a series. So much for appreciate or gratitude, but these are actually common ways that large corporations think. If a name will sell itself, then they no longer need the people who created the name because they'll make a larger profit if they pay someone else less to do the work on the project. So when large corporation buy a developer, they may be more interested in owning the intellectual property of that developer's work than they are the developers themselves.
Large corporations in any industry also typically engage in layoffs when they buy another company for the sake of making their new investment as profitable as possible for them as soon as possible. If you don't understand this, then you should research historical corporate acquisitions and see what actually happens when a large corporation buys a smaller company as well as looking into how corporate executives think so you can understand why they do this. Reading interviews with them where they explain their decisions can be a good starting point on that topic. Some of them are even willing to say the quiet part out loud, so you can get some brutal honesty about corporate decision-making in interviews like that.

They don’t need to sell that much. Microsoft just really needs the variety. The only first party game from Microsoft I played all the way through this gen has been Pentiment (which was phenomenal btw).

    1. Throwing money to buy publishers.

the biggest problem with MS is that they just haven't been doing enough management at all. For the most part they have just let everyone do what they want. Microsoft didn't force Redfall out etc. Zenimax did. If MS bought SEGA, it would probably mean SEGA games only come to Xbox and PC, and release on Gamepass, but it would not likely mean anything else.

Dude, the opening line to this video is way too true. I'm an entrepreneur & ethical capitalist with a a bit of experience producing indy games, and the results of these kinds of moves are always anti-consumer. Budget will go up (so prices will keep climbing), and dev timelines will extend (in large part due to studio bloat & bureaucracy), but quality will go down. "Let's spend an extra $100mil having 500 people take that formula that worked that one time, change the skin in 2 minor ways, add a mechanic, and sell it for $70-- wait, no, actually $75 this time..." fuuuuuuun....

Xbox would rebrand their console in Japan as a Sega product. That would improve their standing in Japan along with Sega’s and Atlus’ games as first party software. I disagree with you OJ, Microsoft owning Sega would help Microsoft immensely in Japan. Good for the industry? Probably not, but it wouldn’t be the end of video games as we know them either.
