I hate to say it but I agree 100%. I was a 360 fan boy. I remember playing Skate and halo every morning before school with a select group of freinds. 360 nailed the comradery and first party uniqueness. Sadley since that faithful day (the launch of Xbox 1) they have only gone down hill. I have to be honest though as much as I prefer Play station and loved my PS4 experience I was coerced into Xbox series x this generation. If not entirley because the appeal of game pass and bethesda being one of my favorite gaming companies creating my favorite franchises, than because of availability of consoles and pricing. I wholey hope that Xbox figgures itself out and rises to the greatness we know they can achieve based off the 360 era. But I won't hold my breath. Great video brother! Keep up the awesome content.

I honestly don't know why AAA developers won't consider making their own pokemon like game. 😔 I wish Obsidian Entertainment would make their own anime-themed open-world creature-taming game with the graphics of Kena: Bridge Of spirits.

I watched your whole video and at first I was with you. Then in the second half of the video, you became full of shit. You clearly failed to do your research while doing your comparison, so I'll educate you so you can get your shit right.
First of all, this bull shit about sony taking time to cultivate its talent is complete garbage. Of the studios winning all those awards. The vast majority were acquired. Do some research. Naughty dog, insomniac, sucker punch, guerrila, bend, media molecule, housemarque, firesprite, nixxes, blue point, Valkyrie, haven, bungie. Each of these studios was bought and over time became a corner stone of Playstations gaming empire. The people who roast you for your video are going to roast you for being ok with Sony doing something, that you're giving MS shit for. Why is it they can invest ina shit ton of studios and reap the down the road success, but MS is brain dead corporate giant for doing the same goddamn thing. I try to give you clowns a chance when I watch your moronic videos, but you all make the same god damn mistake, using your bias instead of your fucking brain.
Then you go on about MS management structure. Completing neglecting the fact that the corporation consistently ranks as one of the best places in the country to work every year. You make a stupid ass comment about MS hiring friends instead of people who know what they are doing. Their new studios are literally headed by game directors who worked on very successful projects and are then staffed by devs who worked on games like The Last of Us and God of War. You'd know they are placing people like that in leadership positions, if you surprise surprise, did your fucking research instead of talking out of your ass. You talk about mismanagement, but fail to mention the commentary from devs acquired by MS who released great games the past couple of years. Who talk about MS giving them money and getting out of the way so they can make the best game possible. A structure that coincidentally lead to them being the 2021 gaming publisher of the year. Something else you didnt mention.
You leave all that out (I didnt even mention how game devs, including indie studios love game pass and how it benefits them) then go on to say xbox will only be around because of MS' money, after completely ignoring everything they are doing to try to improve. Then have the nerve to say give you a chance before telling you to fuck off.
If you are going to post a one sided slam video. They are right to tell you to fuck off.

I argue that the fall of Xbox began in 2010 with a little big thing called Kinect. Microsoft effectively stopped catering to the market which had made them tons of money to try and cash in on the Wii audience. This is when the meme of “xbox only makes Gears and Halo sequels” begins and also when Sony gained its lost marketshare. 2013 was just when the rot became noticeable on the surface.

The Series systems seem to be a step up IMO. They've sold over 20 million units in two years and XBOX is on the right path again, with a lot games scheduled for 2023. When it comes to Gamepass, Sony is doing the same thing with Plus+, aside from day in date. Funny how Gamepass went from "Unsustainable" to "We must copy it". 🤣

  • @jesseblack6088
    @jesseblack6088 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I kinda have an issue with Microsoft AND Sony at this point. Now Sony is the anti consumer one imo. Xbox has never really made good games aside from Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza. Microsofts hardware and architecture is what makes them great. It’s not really Microsoft’s fault that Sony had the rights to all of these iconic franchises and an established fan base already. I believe Microsoft is at least making an effort to share some of their titles with Sony, but Sony would never do the same in return. They were forced to give Xbox MLB because the MLB realized the games would make more money in both platforms. The console wars are just tiring tbh, they should just make a deal and share all of their titles between platforms, maybe one day lol. I believe competition is good, but at the point each console is about equal in power and there’s far too much emphasis on exclusives these days. 3rd party studios used to make banger after banger and I feel like what console you had mattered less.

But Valve itself has made in house countless good games from the ground up. They quit making games, but it isn't fair to compare them to Microsoft. Microsoft has never worked with a team to build up classic games like Valve did. Halo was successful because of Bungie. Gears of War was successful because of Epic. That is why both franchises have gone under without them. The teams that Microsoft got for them are abysmal and Microsoft doesn't really work with them at all. Actually they do the opposite. Numerous devs at 343 that have left said that Microsoft's contractor agreements were an absolute mess. I left Microsoft after 11 years recently and went back to Playstation as my main. It's just sad to see that they're dishing out a bunch of money to studios and aren't sitting down and focusing on what they have and building up on it. Gamepass is great and all and I use/used it very sporadically but when I do I legit just play one game for a month and dip back to my PC or PS5 (switch is just buried somewhere also but I see more worth in that at the moment). They're just in a constant state of limbo. Me and my buddy played Gears which was a first for me and I absolutely LOVED every second of it. The most recent iteration just seems like a hollow shell of it's past self. Which could explain the current state of MS at the moment. About the Activision merge, I hope it goes through just so that games like CoD could also potentially return to it's vision from way back when. But honestly, if they do buy them, I just hope it's not the same dance we've seen with their most recent mergers...

Do you know what "build up their studios" even means? It's a phrase that's thrown around alot. To build a studio that works well together, means to almost build a family in a sense. They need to be efficient and familiar with their resources and their employees.
When xbox isn't " building up their studios" that means they'd either have such a dysfunctional work environment that commu nication with employees and management was impossible, or like how 343 and the AAAA studio have been hiring contract workers.
They shouldn't do this of course. That's why they hired crystal dynamics to work on perfect dark for them. The real issues lie with miss management of company resources. But another part of the issue, is that whoever calls the shots, doesn't seem to want to change things. It took almost 10 years for Bobby Ross to finally give the steering wheel. We don't know the context behind her leaving. Whether it be the general state of the halo property, or her recognizing that she shouldn't be the head of 343. Part of me want sto bet that she stepped down just based on the fact that no one above her, had her removed before.
My entire point is that yes, you're right. But some of these issues should be elaborated on. There's issues with every company. Sony had a similar stumbling block with the ps3, being overpriced and not really having any promising games initially. But they picked it up and marketed the shit out of the ps3 and in the end had a success. Now with the activities deal, I understand the your point. They aren't "organically" making studios. But in the end, that really doesn't matter as long as the games are good. We really do have yet to see what a current gen xbox exclusive looks like. Halo is a weird case, because they are so transparent about how badly managed their studio had been, whether intentional or not. While rare hasn't been making banjo, they did make a massivly popular game in sea of thrives. While ots not really my type of game, it's massively enjoyed by a niche audience. Niche is the key word.
We've come to point where all people see are the massively marketable games. I mean, yeah that's kinda the point. But niche titles, personally are hugely more important. Games like sea of theives, grounded, pertinent, whatever Everwild ends up being. These games aren't being designed like God of War or horizon. They definilty aren't getting the budget of those games, but they don't need to. The diversity in games is what makes xbox games more impressive. No matter what your interested in. You will find a game or games that you will like. Sony has 3rd person action adventure games. And a multitude of dead franchises that just aren't as marketable, because they just haven't out the time and money Into them. Nintendo really is the perfect example of balance between marketability and original content. They have rts, platformers, racing games, puzzle games, party games, (1 fps in metroud prime), horror, adventure, rpg, competitive. This is the kind of library that xbox wants to have.
But, we can't see it yet. Just another year I guess.

I find it interesting that Sony and Microsoft have essentially switched places. Sony has become less innovative and more anti consumer while Xbox has gone all in pro consumer announcements with some exceptions of course. It really shows that competition is always good. Xbox struggled throughout the entirety of the 8th gen and it showed Microsoft that no matter how big you are, if you go against what your consumer base wants, they will punish you.
Edit: I don't care about trying to prove which console is better because that's subjective. All I wanted to do was point out the flip that the companies have gone through since the 7th gen of consoles. Sony is currently top dog decent game lineup and solid exclusives. Xbox has no games atm but they do offer value in other ways such as gamepass and allowing games to be played across devices with their (still in development) Xclpud technology. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. My comment was never meant to be another "Well my megacorp console has this!"

Great video just a few points I would like to challenge
    Xbox not growing their studios
    - Coalition is doing great, even helping make UE5
    - Rare's Sea of thieves is their biggest game ever
    - Grounded and Pentiment are 2 good games we would never see under PS(they would rather remaster LoU1 for $70)
    - We have to see what the rest are cooking
xbox needs to fix the problem during the Xbox One era(no exclusives but Forza/Halo/Gears)
    - they had 4 studios(their own fault), PS is always buying studios every few years for decades, basically EVERY studio is one they bought, while they worked with them before, they buy them because they made good games
    - xbox woke up the last 5 years and to compete they actually need studios to make the games first, they buying studios they have worked with before, some of them became publishers
Xbox is hellbent on their studios using in-house Engines
    - Doesnt xbox have the most UE5 games in development? They have the Coalition as tech support
    Xbox doesnt have an identity
    - They do its games for everyone, Racing simcade and open world, FPS, 3rd person shooters, RPGs 3rd person, first person, ARPG's, strategy games, platformers, survival games, MP focused titles, singleplayer ones
Xbox has lots of quantity over quality
    - Xbox in 2021 won publisher of the year with the highest ever rating across the board, they just dont have the Naughty Dog/Santa Monica tier game which dominates the industry at the awards
Edit: Every single point you have made, Xbox has been fixing them, slowly but when PS owns the biggest platform thats double Xbox size and gets the best 3rd party deals, its almost to compete but throw money at the problem. If Xbox was run by anyone but MS they would've been closed down because of practices PS did and now its being reversed but with MS paying the bills

Gonna disagree with Xbox still being a failure, you had a strong point for a while with the first half of the Xbox One generation. Where by almost every metric available they dropped every ball imaginable. No one is going to disagree with that. But when getting into the last few years, Game Pass, the acquisitions, the lack of 'real exclusives' being available on PC/cloud etc the points became far less solid and more
"Sure, Xbox as a brand may be profitable, and it's not going anywhere, and sure Game Pass is a great value, and being able to have more choices is convenient, but I don't like how they are doing business or how they are handling the brand so failure it is."
Which to be very clear, is perfectly fine for an opinion, and this is an opinion piece video. But when you dub something a "failure" you imply some level of objectivity. All of the points you made would have fit much better under a title like "I dislike the modern direction of the Xbox brand" which in the title says clearly this is an opinion video. Where "How Xbox became Microsoft's greatest failure" implies a far more concrete statement, when much of the points of the latter half of the video are extremely subjective. As to the quality of the games, the value of game pass, the choices afforded by Xbox play anywhere and PC support etc. For some people those aspects make Xbox "not" a failure. While for you they do the opposite. But I did hear you out and was a decent trip down memory lane.
EDIT: I love the Xbox 360 as much as you do it seems, that said I personally think that Xbox is in it's best position today since those times. With some issues of course with internal studio management. But I just can't describe Xbox as a brand as a 'failure' past like 2017 or 2018 and certainly not since the start of this generation. 2013-2018 or so was the dark days imo and they have been gone for a while.

Usually agree with much of your content, but I can't even pretend to agree that Xbox was ever on top of the market. The only place where their sales were ever decent was in the United States, globally the Playstation has stomped the sales in every generation (this is easy to look up as the sales are public and a quick google search shows this by year). Yes the Xbox has had some decent games, but in every generation the same could absolutely be said about the Playstation and their first party games. Xbox tended to have a few big games, but only a few, and of those it almost always came down to Halo for their big fans, and Gears as a side note after. The rest of the sales were the same yearly CoD and Battlefield as Playstation also had because it was mostly the same audience who bought the Xbox because of Halo. If you want to get into technical specs then the only time the Xbox beat the Playstation was the "Series x" recently and only because the of highest end 4k (something most people can't use), they even backed the wrong storage media with HD DVD over Bluray. I fully agree the Xbox was Microsoft just throwing money at a random project where they didn't actually care about the console and were only trying to get into yet another business.

I was a major weeb as a kid, so i was mostly on PlayStation and Nintendo. But it was Xbox 360 that got me hooked on western games like CoD Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 2. It opened my eyes to a whole new genre and style of games.
But I felt the steam for Xbox left when they announced Xbox One (which we all thought would be called Xbox 720 back then lol). Its focus on tv and media, not games turned me off. So i stayed with Playstation.
Never bothered looking at Xbox again till recently with the Xbox Series S, which was ironically the only next gen console i could manage to get during launch 2020.
I think Xbox has a long way to go to ever get back to its glory days. You are right about the DBZ comparison, Xbox will never really be able to surpass PlayStation so I needs to just do its own thing, kind of like Nintendo. I think Game Pass is that thing. I love it. I've saved so much money. But you are right their 1st party titles are weak.
Halo Infinite was mediocre. But the their party titles in Game Pass day one do kept me busy.

As a gamer who owns an Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4 and building a gaming PC, there are some facts that are not entirely true after watching your video. Xbox did not become the leader in the gaming industry just because of it's successful generation with 360. Yes they dominated over the PlayStation 3 but that's it. With Xbox one that's where the failure started and Sony took full advantage and dominated last gen however they did not kill off Xbox because Phil Spencer unvealed Gamepass which eventually changed the landscape with one phrase, "Play your games anywhere". This also allowed gamers on the PC side accessing PC Gamepass to also enjoy Xbox games on their system of choice as well as the ability to play on mobile even on your tablet or on your smartphone. Even though it took a while for Sony they eventually decided to adapt to the Gamepass model to create PlayStation Plus and started to port thier exclusive games to PC. Second fact which you unfortunately failed to mention in your video was that Sony was also throwing money to third-party companies to keep those games or game content away from the Xbox consoles since last gen. So, both sides were throwing money instead of only Microsoft.
So let's look at the current generation between the Xbox series s and the PlayStation 5. Microsoft went into this generation with a 3-prong attack with their high end console Series X, the entry level Series S and cloud gaming which forced Sony to counter with their Diskless PlayStation 5. In the Japanese market which are both dominated by Sony and Nintendo Microsoft had the hardest time in the past to establish themselves overseas however with this generation they were more successful in that market with both Series X and their Series S. Also Phil Spencer made countless trips to Japan to talk to various developers and make deals to get some of their more popular jrpg games such as PERSONA to be available on Xbox consoles. Gamepass also helped other game developers with their games that wouldn't sell well by themselves however while being on game pass actually boosted sales of games like OUTRIDERS. The game pass model is basically the reason why Microsoft and XBOX is still revelant today but that doesn't completely explain thier lack of constant first party titles.because of Sony's marketing strategy to pay money to keep games off of Xbox Consoles which inadvertently lead to the Activision Bethesda deal which is currently ongoing.
I do agree that Microsoft does have a serious issue in marketing thier games. High on Life which is currently on Gamepass is actually a really good game minus Rick and Morty humor that may deter certain players but overall it's still good. Microsoft did not advertise that game or exposure more than it received. Also with the recent Microsoft employee layoffs that's currently happening isn't a good look too. What Microsoft needs to do especially in 2023 is to bring out more information about their upcoming games, do much better in their marketing for certain games and be more transparent more than ever. I believe that Microsoft will eventually ride out the murky Waters that is in right now and release more first-party games than it has in the past to be more competitive in which Sony doesn't want to happen. So to say that Xbox has become Microsoft's greatest failure isn't entirely true. They just have to get better with their delivery of games constantly like Sony does.

This video completely overlooked Xbox's shift in business model vs Sony. You are absolutely correct that Sony has surpassed Xbox in exclusives and games itself but, that has been the same for the past 10-15 years. Microsoft decided that they can't compete with that and focused more on accessibility in games instead of exclusivity and you know what, that's not a bad thing. One thing that was left out is how bad Sony pushed back on cross play. That allows accessibility to all players which Sony is ademitly against.
Xbox for all intensive purposes, doesn't need to build a console with the advent of Game Pass but, they do to provide a way of gaming to those who can't afford to pc game and that's a huge win to consumers.
The fact of the matter is I haven't used a Microsoft console since 360 but I still use my Microsoft account to this day when I set it up well over 15 years ago. I think it's just awsome that I can game with my friends on Xbox and even use discord when I can just as easy use the Xbox app inside of windows. Microsoft has always been more accepting to 3rd party integration and hosting, rather than creating something new. Sure, I do wish that halo, gears, and other Microsoft exclusives were better however, I can play exclusives pretty fast on my pc where I would have to wait years for the better exclusive on the Sony side to be avaliable on PC and that's okay.
Buying a Playstation is still relevant because Sony still uses its business model in creating a fantastic console gaming experience and gaming needs that. However, the comparison to Sony and Microsoft isn't as cut and dry as it was 15 years ago. Microsoft has moved on from console games and focuses more on being a game host and making games avaliable to more people. That includes bad games as well.
So yeah, this video shines a light on how bad Microsoft is as a console exclusive lens However, it's not very fair to keep Microsoft in that lens when they tried focusing this shift with the release of Xbox one in 2014. They realized that in order to be relevant in gaming, they have to provide more than just a console and they have achieved that.

Yes Sony pays for the FF rights, but as a Japanese company, Sony is more receptive to trying to make Japanese games more worldwide, so of course Sony would make such a deal. Meanwhile, Microsoft hasn’t really tried to reach out to Japanese game developers (in recent years. Trying to buy Nintendo in the early days is not a currently relevant event) They expect the Western market to carry them through, while Sony gathers talent from both the east and the west (such as Insomniac games and Sucker Punch… clearly being studios that were formed in the west, and then there was the deal with Square Enix to keep FF7 Remake off of Xbox… a Japanese developer). It’s almost like Microsoft knows it doesn’t sell consoles as quickly in Japan and makes little effort to turn the tide, and as a result, doesn’t really cultivate an audience that would warrant deals with JRPG developers. It’s not to say Xbox lacks JRPGs altogether (they DID get Kingdom Hearts 3 after all) but Microsoft doesn’t really play ball with the Japanese market very often.

@@jkarma3356 exclusives aren’t as important as people make it out to be. However the Series X doesn’t do anything to feel new. The UI is SOOOOO dated and all the games I have are already on Sony.
Xbox over all just isn’t doing enough. At the very least fix the UI lol.

Except it took Sony what, like 2-3 years before they had any exclusive titles for the PS5, if anyone could get ahold of a console to begin with.
Not defending XBox or Micro$haft, the last Xbox console I bought was the 360 and I only have the digital version of the Series S because a friend bought it for me and it's just taking up shelf space for the most part, but Sony barely scraped by this console generation.

Low quality first party launches is a huge drag.
Gears and Halo is what started it all and if you look at recent launches they constantly lose a large player base within weeks because of low quality.

Xbox brand is not a failure, it does make money and they make millions, they just don't sell as much as the competition, I have all the consoles and a gaming PC and I prefer to play on the xbox, they have always pushed new features and then Sony follows, what they need is games, exclusive games like Sony has, once they have that then everything will balance.

That’s never gunna happen when most studios want to develop for Sony. They want their titles on the PlayStation system as they know that more people will play it as PlayStation dominates the casual gamer market.

The only reason the Xbox 360 did so much business was because Sony executives decided to be complete and utter idiots. Made the PS3 hardware so difficult to work on that nobody wanted to develop for it.

i've been saying for years that Microsoft clearly wants out of the console market, shifting "Xbox" entirely into what Gamepass is currently, but they can't do that until Sony allows it on Playstation platforms; as much as Xbox tries to puff out their chest and act like they're competition to anybody, they are completely at the mercy of Playstation at this point, and i have a feeling that Playstation is going to make it absolutely unbearable for them (rightfully so)
i remember watching that 2014 E3 live and man, the overwhelming relief and joy that came from Playstation's rejection of DRM....that's hard to describe. big time agree that that was the turning point of the console industry. truth be told, if Nintendo invested more in tech and kept up with Playstation in terms of 'horsepower', Xbox would be dead and buried in a few years' time

      @Balnazzardi ปีที่แล้ว +2

Same, its the sole reason I got Series X at launch. Sure they had excellent backwards compatibility already with Xbox One X, but there was no reason to go for it when Series X/S became available, and since I never owned any Xbox One console it was high time for me to upgrade from 360. Playing any backwards Compatible game on it has been great even just for quick resume and non existing loading times alone, but its even better if there is FPS boost and/or 4K and HDR support
