  • How to remove 2nd row seats in 2004 Toyota Highlander or similar mid SUV.
    We fully removed 2nd and 3rd row bench seats and rails in our 2004 Toyota Highlander to gut the interior to make room for a bed and storage as we convert it into our camper car.
    It's simple once you know where to look.
    To remove the 2nd row seats:
    - Pull off plastic covers (2 covering the ends of the rails in the front, and 2 in the back for each of the solo right side seat and the dual left side seats)
    - Unscrewing 14mm bolts
    - Removing the seats and rails from the car
    *Check out our part 2 video removing the 3rd row seats too.

    Thank you for this video! I wouldn\t have been able to get the seats out of my 2006 Highlander without your directions!

    I watched this video because of the stupid look on your face for the thumbnail. I don't think you were trying to do it but you got me. Great video.

    thanks for the video! fyi, turns out it’s a 14mm bolt, apparently japanese cars use metric system. noting bc i busted a 9/16 adapter trying to get out a particularly stuck bolt, but a 14mm adapter with additional leverage got it out okay 👌

    I really want to see what the back looks like and how much space there is after the seats are removed, in case, for longer trips, you can use if for say two bikes, with front wheel on or off. Do you have other vidoes that show this, thanks,

    Is this different than 2005 model? Having trouble seeing the same view for 2nd angle of back bolts

    How did you angle the seats upwards to access the bolts in the back? My middle seats are still flat and i can't quite get to the back side bolts on the middle seats

    • @wayoutwandering
      @wayoutwandering  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, good question... It was surprisingly tricky! I had the seats flat and thought for a while that I was missing something because I couldn't quite get it. However, with my socket wrench's extender and several attempts at getting it wedged in at the right angle, I was able to fit it over the bolt and get it out. The extender was crucial, but even still it barely fit, was a really tight squeeze fitting it and my hand close enough, and I could only do about a 1/8th turn at a time. It took forever, but ultimately got it.

    did your back seats not have a cable attached underneath? Mine do for sliding the seat forward and back, but they run clear under the carpet by the rear mounting brackets

    • @wayoutwandering
      @wayoutwandering  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting - ours didn't have a cable, nor did they slide (the middle and back rows). Maybe we had a different model edition of the 2004 Highlander.

    Great video, you won't have an acting career, but you can teach. I watched, went outside and did it, EZ Peazy...
    Note;The passenger side, middle seat does not lay flat when folded, so if you are only removing one (so my wife can put her ski boots on in this crazy covid world) be sure to select which seat will meet your needs. Wide and no table, or narrow with a flat folding (table) next to you.

    do you just replace the bolts to keep water from coming up. Or, do the bolt holes not go through to the bottom?

    • @wayoutwandering
      @wayoutwandering  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're still working on other features, but for now replaced some of the original bolts back into their bolt holes, and covered some with supports for the bed, etc. Looking into them, it doesn't seem like water would be an issue, but I'm not totally sure if it would be.

    You sure its 9/16 sae bolt? Not 14mm? How much weight do you think you pulled out with seats removed?

    • @wayoutwandering
      @wayoutwandering  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, good catch - every bolt I met in the highlander was either 10, 12, or 14mm. I must not have caught myself mentioning 9/16 standard in here. Thanks for flagging that

    • @wayoutwandering
      @wayoutwandering  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I'm not sure of the weight. From a handling perspective, they weren't too heavy (maybe 50lbs?) - more bulky and awkward.
