    Imperial Japan seems to be awfully impressed with Germany... foreshadowing anyone?
    Also, English and Korean subtitles coming within the week.
    P.S. Happy 1 year anniversary to my channel.

      I think they just took from the most successful/dominants, and Germany coincidentally formed at the same era as the meiji restauration. It instanly became the dominant continental power in Europe, instead of France, so it probably inspired Japan (that being said, the educational system in Japan was based on American and France models (a combinaison of the two)).
      I think that the Japanese have a particular capacity to learn from "the most successful", as they did from China in ancient times and from Europe in the 19th century.

    Excellent video! Great work👍
    Like many other historians, you begin with the arrival of Perry. I wonder if you should look a little further back to the Opium Wars in China. I’d be interested in hearing about the Japanese reaction to that conflict. I often get the feeling that Japanese attitudes to China are often coloured by Western attitudes to China. Certainly, the same is true now.

    I wonder in the Meji constitution, what kind of political party system did they use? Did they use the two party style like the USA or the multi-party style like the UK?
    Also when did political party become a thing in Japan’s government?

    Thank you Sean for your video. It is amazing how Japan was able to change so quickly. I am amazed that the Japanese could fight the Boshin War, and get the European Powers and the United States not to intervene. Usually the European Powers and the United States always intervene based on their own interest. In addition, it is amazing that Japan was able to adopt some liberalizing aspects of western republicanism and ideas of individual property rights while dismantling the feudal system of noble privilege. Are you sure this happened? I also notice you mention adopting western scientific ideas. I know many non-European states teach western scientific ideas in their schools. These non-European states enjoy using modern conveniences but few if any of them can actually make their own. Today it seems South Korea is the only non-European country to join Japan as a truly industrialized country.

    From the isolated islands in the east to the biggest power in asia and the world, Japan has had and accepted dramatic changes with both good and bad in late 19th century.
    And they are facing the turning-point in 21C like 19C. I'm wondering how they will react and get advanced or declined in the future.

    No, chinese under disastrous barbarian (manchu) dynasty, were conquered by colonial powers (westerners + Russian Empire & Japanese Empire) cos barbarians had bring disaster upon chinese people & had represented a weak dynasty. Colonialists also had bring disaster upon chinese & were strong. Also strong was (independent) Japan, where westerners couldn't invade as in China. That's about xenophobic chinese (or sinophobic westerners).

    Japan was less xenophobic?? No, Japan had no power to defend itself from Dutch & Portuguese unlike Qing, Japan was more fascinated by European culture and they've copied Western systems even changed language while Korea kept closed door despite several attempt by Western powers to open up Korea.

    • @TheDragonHistorian
      @TheDragonHistorian  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wtf are you trying to say? "Japan was more fascinated by European culture..." that means they were less xenophobic.

    • @KoreanSentry
      @KoreanSentry 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** being fascinated isn't less xenophobic. Japan did not have open immigration, they've imported European technologies and goods not people.

    • @TheDragonHistorian
      @TheDragonHistorian  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      KoreanSentry Wowwwww, maybe I should've added a disclaimer about how Japan wasn't completely open to the West and persecuted Christians, and later wanted to kick out "barbarians."
      Oh wait.

    I don't think it's about xenophobia. It's most likely that China understood that their culture & trafiunweds to be protected from western influence but unlike Japan they decided to keep even the good things of the West out. Japan clearly & wisely in my opinion decided to keep western culture & their religion out while learning all the good things from the West like modernisation which the West had taken a lead into.
    Also women not getting vote doesn't seem like a big deal when they also didn't had to compulsorily serve in the military as men did.
