Japan. The island archipelago off the coast of the orient. The Land of the Rising Sun. We know a lot about this little nation thanks to the tales of Europeans authors who wrote about the mysterious closed country. Tales of Samurai, Ninja and the Shogun. But what was once an isolated and regressed society would be transformed into the megalith of the Japanese Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Japanese continued to rescue Polish orphans in Siberia. The smallest orphan that Japan saved was a two-year-old child.The orphan was crying near her dead mother. The Japanese immediately rescued the orphan. Polish orphans were sent to Japan for treatment. Japan fed the Polish orphans a hot meal every day. All Polish orphans have recovered. Japan continued to love Polish orphans very much. All Japanese donated money to save Polish orphans. Polish orphans were always smiling. Japan has successfully returned 765 Polish orphans to Poland.

This was a victory parade, and the defeated German soldiers were ordered to be there to show respect. The reason they turned their backs to the British, when _their_ contingent of the parade passed by, was because the British soldiers in the parade hadn't done any of the fighting. They had used colonial troops, but it wasn't the colonial troops who were parading.

As quite often, the British tend to over glorify themselves after winning a war thanks to their overnumbered colonies, by using the people from these colonies to do the dirty work for them...although you might be tempted to say, "like everyone else" (mostly the French), that doesn't prevent anything because in that case, being the greatest of all colonial empires inevitably means they were the ones who abused it the most, technically, whatever "cool" they might be looking while doing it, or "nice" with their colonies (ahem, well, except with the Irish, you know, ahem...nobody's perfect, 'right ? Ahem, ahem, anway...), that doesn't change anything to the result or the endings : they were exploiting people from other countries, and they happened to be nothing less than literally the world's champions about this stuff, no kidding...! And I believe they weren't blamed enough for this compared to other countries that used to do it as well, considering they were the biggest in this business, so blaming more the others than them about this is just unfair, that's all I'm saying...
Actually, both the 1,000 British soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, The South Wales Borderers; and 500 soldiers of the 36th Sikhs did very little fighting. As they were outnumbered by their 23,000 Japanese allies, they were under Japanese command. The Japanese commander deliberately tried to sideline the british & colonial troops, so this would be a Japanese victory, with the glory (and the spoils, possession of the port) going to them. The British weren't even told about the final assault.
That because they saw the Japanese as superior to the other Asians countries how hitler saw the Germans as the superior race

9:40 small correction, Tanegashima is an island. The Portugese matchlock arquebus used by the samurai were called Tanegashima-teppo, named after the island. It's more convenient to refer to them as arquebuses.

Fun micro-factoid about Japan's meteoric rise from isolationist backwater to Victorian world power: When the Americans opened international applications for space at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, Japan was the first in line for exhibit space and ended up being they third largest spender at the fair behind France and Germany. The Japanese exhibits were also widely regarded as the best of the international visitors, regularly being praised for their consistency in excellence and for the admirable dedication and politeness of the Japanese workers, the only Eastern nation at the time that the Western powers respected as a (near) equal. After the fair, much of the Japanese exhibits' contents were sold or donated to American collectors and museums, and the Japanese structures in the International Section, known as the Ho-O-Den Buildings, became one of only three structures left standing as the rest of the fair structures, all intended to be temporary, were either torn down or destroyed by fire. Tragically, the Ho-O-Den Buildings were also burned during World War II by anti-Japanese rioters.

Inuyasha is in Sengoku period, evidenced with muskets and that a member of the Takeda clan appears, which was around previously but only prominent in the Sengoku Period.
Princess Mononoke is in the Ashikaga period. The MC is an emishi, one of the remnants of the indigenous people of northern Honshu (Main japan, below Hokkaido). By Sengoku, emishi have been assimilated, destroyed and/or scattered.
To add to Meiji period: Gintama, but instead of US its aliens.
To add to Taisho: Demon Slayer. There are signs of modernization from electricity to cars and steam trains, but only in the urban areas. The rural population are still very much traditional with wooden structures and walk/horse and mostly wear traditional clothing.
Hetalia is sort of all over the place, but WW2 stuff is in the Showa period (1926-1989).
To be fair, pre and post WW2 Showa settings are much different, with early Showa showing a mix of traditional Japanese things (Kimono and Yukata were still worn around amongst suits and dresses). The Wind Rises is set here.
Later Showa (after Japan had sort of recovered from the war) shows much more modernization, T-shirts and Bullet trains. Incidentally, early manga and anime such as Osomatsu-kun and Doraremon are set in the late Showa period (contemporary for the time). The elderly in Japan would mostly have been born in Showa period, and will find the setting nostalgic.

Qing dynasty of China is “大清”, not ’‘大慶“. And Joseon (i.e. Korea) is just “朝鮮”, different from "北朝鮮“ which refers to North Korea today.

I love this thank you! I’m an 1/8 Japanese and know little to know thing about the history bc it’s so much, but this was a nice overview and jumping off point for more knowledge. Would love to have the year or approx. year range running in the top corner the whole time! Would make following a bit easier and would help meld the pieces together a bit more, thanks!

This was a very nice history lesson. You should make these things as long as you feel they need to be, a long video, or a two part video are both good formats.

To be fair, America probably would have joined ww2 sooner or later and they would have attacked Japan then. The idea behind pearl harbor was more of an preemptive strice combined with the conquering of valuable regions protected by the US.
The only real alternative to going to war against the USA would have been to stop conquering and going back to their island. And that's something that nationals just don't do.
@@melonlord1414 I don't know if and when the US would have declared war on Japan, actually. Keep in mind that the US population was very isolationist prior to the outbreak of the war. And while privately FDR wanted conflict, it was more against the Germans than in Japan. It's one thing to say that it probably happened, but I don't see how really.

11:01 : "they decimated their army in the process" - that wasn't a bug, it was a feature. There is a theory that Hideyoshi attacked Korea for this specific reason: after most of the country was finally united and the century-old civil war stopped, there were lots and lots of warriors who knew nothing but how to fight, suddenly out of a job. They could have destabilized the country again, so one of the possible reasons for the Korean campaign was to get rid of them.

21:38 it should be noted that the Soviet also invaded Manchuria in about the same timeframe as the Nukes.
And that made them to finally surrender to the allies because in exchange for the Soviet contribution they wanted the Kuril islands and Hokaido and after they took the industrial centers from Manchuria (were moved there out of the Allied bombers) they were ready for a landing in Japan from Korea and the Kuril Islands. Because of the nukes the USA didn't need to give Japanese territories to the USSR.

The soviet invasion of Manchuria was a huge part as the Japanese thought that a surrender to the ussr would depose the emperor but if they surrendered to the us they could have a better outcome and keep the emperor

Very educational and illuminating video that serves as a good overview summary of the country's history. May I recommend that when there is so much convoluted and complicated material to cover, you consider breaking the history into segments that have some kind of unifying feature so that the mind can structurally digest it all a little more easily? Very well done and very entertaining. Especially the part of the Mongol invasions is hilarious. Your animations are just beautiful and - err - quite kawaii.
However, there are some major and minor mistakes, of which I want to correct the four ones that imo are the most worthy to be pointed out.
1. Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Korea after he had unified the country, and his failure wasn't the cause of closing the country by the Tokugawa. The two most important aims of the closure were: kicking out every Catholic missionary and persecuting Christianity as thoroughly as possible, and secondly to monopolize foreign trade to the shogun.
2. The battle of Sekigahara wasn't against Hideyoshi's son Hideyori, but Ishida Mitsunari. The battle against Toyotomi Hideyori was the Siege of Osaka Castle in 1615, after he had reached adulthood and started to become a real threat to the Tokugawa.
3. The correct character for the Qing Dynasty is 清, not 慶
4. Japan gained Taiwan after the First Sino-Japanese War, and Korea - as well as southern Sakhalin and the South Manchurian Railway - after the Russo-Japanese War. The outcome of the First Sino-Japanese War broke China's supremacy over Korea, though.

This is very good just a couple grievances, one being that its written and pronounced, "Sekigahara" no H before the first E. And Secondly I know this is a short video as there is a lot of stuff to cover but with the sengoku period being the most famous I wish you explained about the betrayal of Mitsuhide Akechi with Nobunaga and also wished you could cover Yukimura Sanada as he is by some considered the best Samurai to hold up their ideals of honor and loyalty. I would recommend anyony to either play Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada or the Samurai Warrior games in general or even look up about Yukimura.
Great coverage and in-depths on the history. I especially like how you added your own *voice* and interpretation of evidence throughout the video, while still maintaining an overall objective (and informative) presentation. 14:03 and 19:12 are some of the few examples of this.

fun fact the battle at Sekigahara was Ieyasu vs Mitsnuari, who was an advisor to Hideyoshi, the guy who preceeded Ieyasu and was the follow up to Nobunaga. It was a battle between the man who wanted the former ruler's son to be leader (Mitsunari) , and the man who wanted it for himself (Ieyasu)
Tokugawa Ieyasu was pretty much playing the waiting game, if only Hideyori did the same
