Well- as someone who was a Zen monk for almost 10 years, the guy asked and Seagal - to his great credit- showed him directly. In formal Zen training, immediate demonstrations are required, not clever, wordy pablum. He asked for the essence of Zen and he immediately got shown directly exactly what it is. I doubt he has any idea of what happened to him, but I have a deep respect for Steven Seagal’s depth of understanding, as his demonstration was perfect! And he definitely passed that koan!

Twenty years ago, if you had walked up to Steven Seagal and said, "Can you teach me some martial arts moves?" while getting too close for comfort, you would have been in for a big surprise. Imagine standing too close to a wild animal; just like that, Seagal would have reacted instantly. He would have grabbed your arm, twisted it, and pushed down on your elbow in one smooth motion. It would be like trying to stop a falling tree with your bare hands-impossible and painful. If you resisted even a little bit, both your wrist and elbow would have been messed up, sending you straight to the hospital.
Now, think about the embarrassment of all this happening on camera. It's like slipping on a banana peel in front of a huge crowd-everyone watching and laughing. And then, calling out for your dad as "Daddy"? That would have been the worst. Grown men don’t do that; it’s like a knight dropping his sword in a fight-completely shameful. To Seagal, it would have been an embarrassment, making you look like a little kid instead of a man.
So, getting too close and asking Seagal to show you martial arts would have been a painful and embarrassing lesson. He would have taught you more than just a move; he would have shown you the hard way why respect and keeping your distance matter.
