      It's actually not true. The hook shot works by converting the worst shot in basketball, that being the mid-range jumper, into a viable, high % shot. The math doesn't lie. Very few players in history besides Kareem could knock down mid-range jumpers at a 50% higher rate than an average-to-decent 3-pt shooter can hit 3's.

      2 footed hooks r already so hard to master let alone 1 foot skyhook
      and even if you can be consistent in practice it will be a lot tougher with opponents trying to body you out of your balance
      and if you can make it consistently at game, the opposing team will double you up and cut your steps to gather for the skyhook (sure this will open your teamates for 3s but r you sure you can have 4 out spacing in school levels?)

    • @smashschool6747
      @smashschool6747 4 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      I disagree. I learned it recently because no one guards against it. It's no harder than a jump shot in essence, because it is a wrist shot too. Once the shoulder is lined up and the body created the dynamism, you just flick the wrist at the top of the jump, you can create a soft touch to make it stop on the rim, and you get used to shooting them where you intend. Now as a guard you can get it off, as no one is prepared to block it, and it is extremely demoralising to the opposition.

      @@smashschool6747 I can shoot a hook shot as well and use it All the time to score efficiently but when talking specifically about the "sky hook" its in the name; that hook shot is extremely difficult. The release point is very high and if you add even 6 inches of distance away from the basket, its also alot harder. If you yourself are 6'3 6'4 or above no one in a pick up game you meet on a typical day at any gym is going to block it but when moving up the ranks and eventually if one is good enough to go pro, there will be guys athletic or long enough to block it. Your not wrong, but how can someone become good at the post of they get two shots in it all game? Magic? It's called teamwork.
      What your pointing out is that i also couldn't shoot 3's because I was 'too tall'. Literally that was it. So I had to score inside, making it more predictable.

  • @emerdog6688
    @emerdog6688 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2668

    The reason no one shoots the skyhook much anymore is because it's the most difficult shot to master due to the triangulation involved. Jump shots are released fairly close to the shooter's eye, so it's easier to aim because the hoop-eye-ball triangle is very flat. He shot the hook with the ball 3 feet above his head, so the triangle is much larger. It's the equivalent of shooting a pistol at a target with your arm held out straight out to the side . . . which makes it much harder to aim. Kareem is the only player who took the extra time to master this shot.

      Breaking down any athletic movement can make it seem complex. Have you ever watched Sports Science?
      If you grow up practicing hook shots, you will become familiar with the feel of it. I have to agree with Kareem on this. When I was a kid, I used to shoot on my back yard hoop nonstop. One summer, I developed a upward push shot.
      I would literally drive to the hoop as hard as I could and then literally just push the ball upward like 16 feet high with my right hand and it would land in the basket most times(i'm talking like over 50%) lol this came from 3 months of nonstop effing around on a hoop. And as soon as I stopped, I lost it. It's muscle memory.

      @@kilgoretrout321 again it's context I think, I do agree that a hook shot should be an easier make, but the sky hook is different imo and that's why I think no one has perfected it since, everyone and they're mama can shoot a 3 nowadays. And just to kind of explain where I'm coming from, everyone in the league shoots a regular jumper differently, different release, speed, arc, different base, some people pivot they're lower half forward during the shot to get better arc, some take a lower dip with the ball some with a higher one.. the skyhook is so specific to Kareem and those mechanics which is why I think it's a more difficult shot. The 8-12' range Kareem made so m any shots from is statistically the MOST DIFFICULT range to shoot from, while the weighted value of the 3-pointer makes it a far better option than 8-12' shots. The hook shot is the natural way to make 8-12' shots at a higher completion rate. Not Kareem nor his peers comprehend any of this, which explains why they shot low-percentage 2-pointers for DECADES instead of easy 3's FTW.

    • @xxxYYZxxx
      @xxxYYZxxx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rocketfighter8 The stats are easy to Google. Basically, NBA players shoot around 40% from ~9-10', but 35% from 3-pt range. Even at 30%, 3-pt shots outpace 9-10' shots @ 40%. The 8-12' range is the toughest shot, meaning "getting closer to the basket" doesn't translate into more scoring, it was the knuckle dragging way to play before smart guys (analytics) changed the game. BTW, the solution is to extend the arc of the 3-pt line out of bounds instead of running it parallel to side of the court, thereby eliminating open shooters who stand in the corner. The 3pt would still be viable, but defenses could better compete w/o being forced to cover that one dude standing in the corner.

      Wilt Chamberlain no it isn't, it may be the most efficient with the Warriors but even then it's not full proof and that's with them having the 3 best shooters in the world. Look at the Rockets for example, they aren't the Warriors but they were breaking records last season in 3pt shots attempted/made as a team and were scoring a lot of points. But come playoff time they tried that against the Spurs and even though they blew the Spurs out in that 1st game, coach Pop adjusted his gameplan and the Spurs ended up winning that series.

    • @Sunking210
      @Sunking210 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wilt Chamberlain wanna elaborate more? I dont see how a 3pt shot is the "most efficient" shot when not only is it made at a lower percantage than 2pt baskets but also not made nearly as many times as 2pt baskets

    • @Sunking210
      @Sunking210 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Wilt Chamberlain I still don't really get what your saying man, just go to any boxscore from literally any game. Now compare the percantages, attempts, and made field goals of 3pt shots and compare them with 2pt shots. I'll give you a perfect example, last night the Warriors (undoubtedly the best 3pt shooting team) beat the Magic. The warriors scored 133 pts. 36 of those pts were from 3pt field goals. They shot 50% from 3 which is really great. But where did those other 97 pts come from? 11 of the 97 pts were free throws so 86 of the 133 pts were from 2 pt field goals. Now that's from the Warriors, one of if not the greatest 3pt shooting team in history, now how the hell do you think the other 29 teams would be more efficient shooting three? Also you dont have to shoot 60% from inside the arc, 40% from 3 is really good but compared to the 2pt shot it isn't a big enough sample size to compare that specific percantage, teams shoot roughly around 20 threes a game, and attempt around 60+ 2pt shots. Now imagine attempting that many 3's the percantage would drop tremendously

    • @Sunking210
      @Sunking210 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Wilt Chamberlain like I said you can't compare shooting 40% from 3pt land to 60% from 2. The number of attempts are just not close enough. 20-25 3's a game does not even come close to the more efficient 60+ 2pt field goal attempts teams are averaging. Besides, you say it like any team can just shoot 40% from 3 on any given night. Nope, theres an obvious reason why EVERY team takes more 2's than 3's and you need to look no further than the quote posted on the very comment you and I are replying to

    • @Sunking210
      @Sunking210 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Wilt Chamberlain maybe your misusing the word "efficient". The vast majority of 3's are attempted because of the defense scrambling trying to defend a 2pt shot. Stats don't lie, shots inside the arc will always be more efficient than shots taken from the outside. It's just common sense, if you've ever stepped on a basketball court you should know that the closer you are to the basket, the easier it is to make a shot

But he’s right, the young men men are being taught to handle the ball more and shoot outside shots because these are the skills the college and pro scouts value. However, the fundamentals of the game hasn’t really changed. Probability says take the highest percentage shots and that’s still near the basket. The league needs more quality big men. Thing is though, guys in the earlier eras didn't know about the 3-point line because it didn't even exist until 1979. By then, all the NBA legends of the 80s and even early 90s had refined their games growing up for the 2-point shot. There was no 3-pointer when they grew up. It simply wasn't a thing. People who adopted it into their game while already being pros or near-pros were guys like Larry Bird or even Michael Jordan, but they were doing it during the infancy of it.
      Put Bird or Jordan into today's world where they grew up with the 3-pointer and were taught to take them as much as Steph Curry was growing up, and I am damn near positive that both of them could easily match Curry. They'd at the very least be the best 3-point shooters of their respected positions.

It’s just a different era now and it’s really hard to say how anyone in modern era would play in the old era or vice versa. I love how they made zone defense legal. Made the game much more technical on both sides. And balanced teams. The old rules allowed a crappy team with a star (early Jordan Bulls) to excel on offense as Jordan would just do iso and everyone else would flood the weak side. Could you imagine Shaq under the old rules that Kareem had? He'd have been even more unstoppable. I can only think of a few other players as double teamed as Shaq. And the old rules made it nearly impossible, especially in the paint where scoring would happen quickly (defenders could only double if the person they wanted to double had the ball. They couldn't anticipate the pass).
      I'd rather watch Pick and Rolls than watch iso play dominated by freak athletes like Shaq, Durant, Westbrook, LeBron.

    All sports change. They sort of evolve. Babe Ruth changed baseball into a home run hitters' game. It got another dose of that during the steroid era with the likes of Canseco, Bonds, and McGuire. Football became a passer's game. When the 3 point arc was put into the ABA 50 years ago, a new era was born. It took a while for it to really takeoff, but now it has. I play with some friends in a gym a couple of times a week. No referrees, call your own fouls. There is a 3 point arc that we use. All things being equal, if there is a 3-point arc, the winning strategy no matter whether the game is on a New York playground or in an air-conditioned gym in France is to give the ball to the 3 point shooters. The shot is taken with a 3 point reward. On the other hand, drive to the basket and get fouled, and the offensive player is pentalized by the fact that there are no foul shots, just ball possession. Too much risk with insufficient reward. And the defensive player has no incentive to not foul. End result: the young player learns to shoot 3s.

    • @AttRandyReynolds

      Tim Jansen I play in a university gym a couple times a week. Basically they are pick-up games. We use the same scoring systme you use. I agree with you completely. Just shoot 3s; you can almost always get a shot off without losing the ball from a turn-over, and the shot is worth more.

    • @Unreelme
      @Unreelme 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not only this but if you play 1s and 2s for scoring the 2 point shot is even better. If you also do no foul shooting alongside the busted scoring, then there is no reason to not jack up a ton of threes.

    • @timjansen7694
      @timjansen7694 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      S L Not very many guys who play pick-up basketball, and use the traditonal rules, put much effort into analyzing the flaws in the game. I guess that is okay, just as long as winning and losing doesn't matter. I've played in games were a traditional 2 pointer counts as 1, and a 3 counts as 2. The game is played to 9, or 11, or maybe 15. If a team has some decent 3 point shooters, there is no good reason to enter the 3 point circle unless the defense is wildly over-playing the 3s and allowing unopposed shots from underneath. One thing that would help: fouls have to be pentalized in some manner. I have suggested that the 2nd foul in a possession counts as a made basket and the other team gets the ball. No one has taken that suggestion.

      @@timjansen7694 some players/groups will call fouls so seldomly (I mean, the saying "no blood no foul" is a thing with a lot of people) that your suggestion would rarely ever apply. That's kind of the state you tend to slide into when you call your own fouls in an honor system. And in groups where the offensive team calls the fouls I can see the opposite problem arising of people flopping or calling ticky tack fouls. Unless you have a neutral third party like a ref it would be the cause of a lot of conflict.

The 'street ballers' hate it as well Anybody that would pass the ball in a timely manner and set a few picks, my team would usually win; when my shots were getting to the other team and they would go after me, the really great players would shine and finish the other team off. skyhook is a horrible shot in todays NBA cuz its not a 1/2 court game anymore, you dont have 3 people on offense to grab the boards

      @@gregoryeverson741 I remember Yao Ming used it to a high degree of success. It does take the right kind of player (namely taller ones) and a lot of work to develop that shot. But boy, once it is developed, that player will have an unstoppable tool to become an offensive threat. I mean, you just can't stop a hookshot inside 15 feet of the basket consistently.

    Kareem's probably the only legend who humbly talks about the current and future generation. Almost every other legend usually has criticism towards the game.

    It was inevitable that the 3 would eventually be mastered. It’s a point of delineation. The more interesting question is - what’s next?

      personally i think the middle-close area game is much more interesting than the game focused on 3 pointers. so if this remains or gets even worse my guess is nba and the co will change rules to add intensity and promote more physical and varied play. but how? maybe push 3 pointer line couple of feet further. as it is i assume its tough to in-game find better strategy than walk to attack and throw accurately as soon as you can before going past a single opponent, or doing a short pass burst and then throw a 3.

    As much as people dont want to admit. This is true for most sports as the game ages barriers get broken every generation but without greats like kareem and many other legends of their sport we would have no barriers to break or standards to strive for.

    Kareem was a fast towering man that was built for the nba, but what was really scary about him was how fucking smart and quick on his feat he was. He has insane basketball iq, read the defence then proceeded to use a high percentage method of scoring.

    Wilt Chamberlain, over 70% shooting one season (1972 I think, might be off a year) when he was with the Lakers - still the record but quite a few other big men have come VERY close to that level of accuracy.

    To be fair to all those who have attempted to master the skyhook, Kareem started to learn the shot at a young age and devoted enormous time and effort in perfecting it with both hands!!! It takes tremendous dedication to master the shot and the intricacies of low post play!!! If one doesn’t start early enough, I don’t know if Kareem’s level can be achieved!!! ☮️🖖🏽

    Unironically this is the first time I've seen a retired player say a reason for the difference in play is because a current player are better at a specific skill rather than saying something like "back in my day they'd never get away with it". Takes a v humble soul to do it tbh, especially for a sports star as talented in his day as Kareem
