This powerful song changed my life! I was sitting about 5 ft to the left of the camera recording this at the 1991 Symposium. It was incredible just to be there!
I have listened to this track for so many years now, and it becomes more important as years pass . I cannot help but think of my late son whenever I hear it and it will be played when it's my time . Joe Henry's words and John's delivery of them is exquisite
How VERY loved, and how VERY missed John is still. I have been a committed and devoted fan since 1970--have every record he ever made. THIS song strikes a deep chord with me, and I have asked that it be played at my memorial service when I die.
Picture a small theatre in Northampton U.K. I had a front row seat literally a few feet from John as he sung this song. A lady who was a complete stranger was sobbing gently on my shoulder, such was the power of his music. So sadly missed, but I am totally blessed to have seen him play live five times.
This is his best song, and is so spiritually powerful. Especially when it was so prophetic. Like an operatic tragedy. I especially love the way this song gradually builds up to the end, and then crescendos with his final breakthrough into the cosmos.
If you ever have the chance to attend the John Denver memorial concerts in Aspen, do it. At one point, his guitar is on a stand on the stage with one spot light on it while they play "This Old Guitar". Not a dry eye in the house. There is also a granite garden with his songs etched into huge boulders. Quite a nice tribute. Miss him terribly. He was the light into my darkness.
There is something in his expression and his singing that is strained and forlorn. Other performances at this Windstar symposium are sorrowful- he says that I am never alone and Spirit is in everything. I hope the song helped him in his heartbreak as it comforts me. I care that he went through with these songs but I would have given him a hug afterward and my appreciation for singing when it was hard. "The fire and the wings that fly us home"-may he be flying high and at peace.
Please excuse my earlier comments last week. It was only when I read the full album brochure again for "Spirit" (the original album release) that both "Pegasus" and "The Wings That Fly Us Home" contained full lyrics composed by Joe Henry and music composed by John Denver...in spite of shared lyric contributions to the contrary. May I further state that "The Wings That Fly Us Home " is up there as one of my all-time favorite song performed by Denver! Sooo Beautiful and so spiritual!
Rest in peace John on the anniversary of your passing. This song says it all for everyone who lives with loss

That’s how to do it. On stage; on his own; no orchestration; just raw unadulterated talent. Nice one John.
I could feel his pain .
And his emotions.
He is free and sadly missed.

You're never alone! Believing in things that make us propel to the next stage of our evolution and greatness! Miss you John.
I never had the opportunity to see John Denver in concert. I love the the videos of just John and his guitar. A beautiful song. We lost him too soon.

Spirit fills the darkness!🌈🦋🌈🙏 Words of wisdom now a days.
What a treasure!!! John is so needed in these sorrowful days! I think that this is the most beautiful song he wrote with Joe Henry.
Amen

He appears upset, angry, hurt during this. I have my suspicions why. Poor man.
Isabel he is in the Best Place anyone can be🙏🙏
It is a prayer
