    Drama has become one of my top 5 favorite Yes albums. It's SO relistenable, over and over. Every listen seems to yield some new subtlety. We didn't know how good we had it then. My favorite from the album is "Does it Really Happen?" but every song is excellent.

    WOW!!! Magical performance by GEOFF DOWNES and STEVE HOWE. In a DREAM THEATER concert in London in 1995, HOWE was invited to come on stage to play a medley of some YES songs (including, among others, an extract from "Machine Messiah") with the American band... and you guess it, to the great delight of the audience present. Thanks.

    YESSSS!! I knew you’d love this song my friend 😊. Brings back memories when I listen to this. Although I had listened to Yes for a number of years, this tour was my first live show of theirs in 1980. They performed in the round, and I had third row!! I could even see the set list on Alan’s drum kit as he rotated past me!! To think that this album wasn’t that well received! I think it’s a banger, so many great songs. Rick: It all worked very well up until about 1979... Jon and I had formed a partnership of playing and writing and a way of working. We just felt we weren't getting any input at all from any other areas. Everything became a struggle. We ended up recording an album which we never finished... Jon and I met one day in Paris in a little café and just said, "We've both had enough." I mean the band's just run out of...we were digging into a gold mine that just had a few nuggets left.
    Geoff Downes: The Yes thing had been enormous for quite some time and when I joined it had really gone full circle... [Drama] showed that Yes were prepared to access and push new boundaries. It was put together with a lot of rehearsing and care ... I think ["Machine Messiah"] was probably the most integrated composition on the Drama album from myself and Trevor's side and the old Yes side, if you like. That seemed to encapsulate the mixture of what the Buggles were about and what Yes were about as well... [Drama] was sort of a cross-breed, which is quite difficult to do in a group situation, but particularly a group so ethnic-sounding as Yes. There has always been the technological edge on it as well.

    Poor misunderstood "Drama!" I remember when this came out, there was immense disappointment that Jon and Rick were gone, so our ears didn't hear the album. 20 years later we were all saying, "This album is brilliant! Why did we fans kick it to the curb?"

      I wasn't really fan of the old Yes when I came to this, but knew the Buggles so I found the gathering captivating, using the great craft musicianship of several great Yes members added to brand new ideas from Trevor Horn (who became a power producer even for Yes on the next move ) it was really an exciting period. And Geoffrey Downes, a keyboard you can't ignore when it came to the Asia story as well. It sound fresh for me, a lot of musical surprises. I remember I was very curious to this Drama album, this song must be one of the highlights. Listening to this again with you were doing me good, like some old wine getting richer. Double epic platinum, I agree, "Yes"! 🙏 Well, finally Jon Anderson took some time to experiment other music approaches with Vangelis then, that became another ear goodness, Rick Wakeman back to his solo works that he never really stopped, everyone were busy and happy it seems... 😎

      I listened to it many times but never really got into it. Bough thr LP but never bothered to get the CD later as I did with my other albums. I would have preferred they renamed the band to "Drama" or something during this period, but of course that would not do well for marketing. It's not Yes to me. Never will be. Jon is to inportant a piece of Yes to leave out, period.

    There's a song on it called 'Into The Lens' which also appeared in a more synth-poppy version on The Buggles' second (and last) album in '82, after Horn and Downes had left Yes again and the band broke up temporarily; Might be interesting for you to check out _both_ versions too, Brandon! 😀 I like them equally 😊 The Buggles' version is called 'I Am A Camera' 🙂

    Yes are simply sublime and this is a fresh album to ring in the 80's! I know it's not entirely on topic, but since you're dealing with legendary prog bands that came to prowess in the early 70's, I'm going to segue to that. You've yet to discover the legendary Caravan! Give them a listen. It'll be one of the most pleasant prog discoveries that you'll ever have! Their backstory also is a truly interesting one on how they narrowly missed being famous world wide. Have a terrific day, and keep up the great selections!

      @@retroreactions.... Oh certainly. Their album "In The Land Of Grey And Pink" is a great place to start. The song 'Winter Wine' is a terrific place to start, moving on to Memory Lain/Headloss (a 'banger/concert opener', with flute solo and all!) and 'Nine Feet Underground', which is widely regarded as one of the greatest prog 'epics' ever written. These guys are quality through and through. Them and the group The Soft Machine were widely known as the two bands that spearheaded the Canterbury Scene sub-genre of prog. This birthed groups like Camel, Gong, National Health, Hatfield & The North amd many other legendary british bands.

  • @JamesCormier
    @JamesCormier 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Lyrically, a totally different approach. Missing is Jon's angelic lyrics, and replaced by more mundane storytelling. Chris and Steve were trying something new with the master of the new wave - Trevor Horn. Trevor would go on to produce many great 80s albums. Yes, would further develop their new 80s sound with Jon over the next decade. It's not bad, but it's not the level of music Yes had achieved. Yes must have seen Rush in concert and said something like, "we need to be more like that!" It was a time of change for sure.
