      Given that John M. Jackson played JAG Officer Capt. West in "A Few Good Men" , I wish they had easter egged Demi Moore's character of Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway into an Episode of "JAG", either visually (the character's name on a file, a office directory, a parking space, in an email, etc.) or verbally (hearing chegwidden's end of a phone conversation). By not having Demi actually appear on screen, the Lt. Cdr. Galloway being referenced would be ambiguous enough not to be a direct link / crossover character between "AFGM" and "JAG" but would be specific enough for fans of both.

"you look familiar" as if he was doing one of his movie jokes.. as if he recognized AJ from FGM.

    Why would this be so tough on Admiral Chegwidden? His career includes being a Navy SEAL in Vietnam. Going out of a plane at high altitude, using a parachute and surviving in a wilderness should not present a problem for a SEAL. Sounds more like just a morning workout before breakfast.

    • @darylmorning
      @darylmorning 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      wilhard45 Statistics say...About one in three will get a spinal facture, due to the force when the seat is ejected - the gravitational force is 14 to 16 times normal gravity and it might be applied at 200G per second. Bruising and abrasions are typical from the shock of the chute opening or the air blast. People have hit their chins on their chest. The weight of a standard head, plus helmet, plus mask, is about seven kilograms. At 9G it is 63 kilograms of mass. If you have a 25G ejection, with a standard seat-back angle, the force driving your head forward and down is about eight times the force of gravity. There is also a risk of extremity fracture. Another thing to mention is the fact that, if ANYTHING contacts something in the cockpit on the way out, will be traumatically amputated due to the forever involved. HAHO and HALO Military Free Fall jumps are usually "stepping off" without the extreme separation g forces and lower speeds.

      First of all, the Admiral is no spring chicken. Even the most badass of people have to deal with the realities of age. That makes the fact that ejection seat firing is tough on the body of even young people even more dangerous. The guy hit his dead on the canopy and then got ejected out of an aircraft by rocket assistance. That's a lot to put on the body of even a 20-something that's healthy. An admiral who is getting up there in years and, despite being a badass and a hard-charger in his prime, working mostly at a desk now... He could easily be badly injured.

The pilot was performing a negative G maneuver and the ship captain grabbed his ejection seat handle. The canopy blew off and out he went. Thankfully the captain and the pilot landed safely.

    That was a partial rear seat ejection. The rear seat only moved a relatively small distance up the rails. That is an extremely dangerous situation. The probability of clearing the aft area of the aircraft is extremely low. The odds are you are going to hit hard on the aft upper fuselage, the exhaust nozzles, or one of the vertical fins. If not you are getting dumped into the hot high velocity engine exhausts. I really doubt the Admiral would be as ambulatory after landing as the television show depicted.

      Theri4444 That's not how the military works or how civil aviation command and control works.
      The Pilot in Command, once in flight is in sole command of that aircraft and is responsible for everything and everyone aboard it.
      He's also responsible for everything the aircraft does or fails to do as well as whatever the passengers or crew does or fails to do. Even if higher ranking officials are aboard.
      While the Admiral did pull he handles and pulled his stunt, it is still Harm's fault as he's the Pilot in Command and the responsibility is ultimately his.

      ***** The real question is which will be the easiest on Harm's ass since it will be thoroughly dilated brutally in any event.
      Option A: Chegwidden's boot, his....sidebar or both.
      Option B: The court-martial 's collective and/or its dick
      I think option A would be best. Harm would at least get the option of lube from Chegwidden lol

    The whole premise of the JAG series never made sense to me:
    * SEALs are one career path, JAG is a separate path; leaving one for the other pretty much rules out promotion to 2-star rank;
    * ditto for Naval Aviation and JAG; you won't get very high in rank by doing that.

    • @SpiritHawk7
      @SpiritHawk7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the 2-star is a command billet position. Like how Harm was only promoted to Captain because he was filling a Captain's billet in London. I do agree about how advance in rank doesn't transfer over very well. I'm more familiar in that area with enlisted MOS than unrestricted line commissioned officers. JAG however is definitely a restricted line, so there's not much lateral transfer out of that field. Harm didn't seem to "lose" too much only being a Lieutenant at time of transfer. He got really lucky to stay in the Navy, as in real life, he'd have been "let go" if they couldn't place him anywhere else in the aviation community or another such as JAG accepting him and agreeing to put him through schooling. Did Harm ever disclose what he majored in at USNA? That might have helped.

    This is exactly the same thing that happened in France a little while back. Except it was a civilian.. But his straps were loose, he floated during negative g and grabbed the eject handle to pull himself back down into the seat and went for a ride. The only reason the pilot didn't go too is. Ecshe the sequencer was messed up... Why didn't harm go too? If the RIO ejects during normal circumstances would you expect both seats to fire? I'm not particularly familiar with the F-14 so if there's anyone out there who is, I'd really love to know how the eject sequence worked on that aircraft?

      There is an ejection selector in the F-14. In Pilot mode, a rear ejection would only eject the RIO. Apparently, this was the common mode for all family and friends flights. I have to give credit to Ward Carroll for the information.

    • @rs232killer

      The reply about anywhere in an emergency is, of course, correct. I don't know what it was called 20 years ago when this show was on, but today, there is an airport outside Martinsburg, WV called "Eastern WV Regional Airport." That airport, in addition to being a public general aviation field, is (or was?) home to a West Va. Air National Guard airlift wing which operated C-5 Galaxy aircraft from that field. So, I believe that an F-14 would be able to safely land there.

    • @chrismc410
      @chrismc410 ปีที่แล้ว

      The WV Air National Guard has a base there. They fly and land C5 Galaxies out of there all the time. Planes in the US Military don't get any bigger than the C5 Galaxy. Any sort of fighter can land at Martinsburg with ease. In the event Martinsburg isn't feasible. Hagerstown Airport is 30 min by car and Dulles Airport about 45 minutes by car.
      I used literally live down the street from there, 5-10 min away straight up Rt 11 or I-81.

      Haven't watched the show in decades and only partially, and I am not copping out to Wiki now: But I thought he lost his wings due to some night vision or whatever medical problem, then went to law school. Being a commercial pilot and a lawyer myself, please let me assure you, both are not difficult. Compared to science degrees etc. He could have earned his wings in the early twenties, lost them in the late twenties, study 3 years grad degree, then practise - that is about the only realistic thing in tv show storytelling ;-). (even if this episode is based on a real life story; if he is not current in the a/c, he won't get to fly it, but that's the artistic liberty obviously).

    • @matchesburn
      @matchesburn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He lost his flight status because he, IIRC, crashed his aircraft due to an undiscovered medical condition (night blindness). The Navy can't utilize a pilot that can't operate at night. So he lost his flight status and decided to go into law school and go with JAG. The reason he can still fly is because he's friendly with people like Admirals and it's only during training or otherwise write off flights during the day (and I don't think they allow him to operate on carrier flight decks even then). I know one episode ended with him being real happy when Mac suggested what he did was enough to possibly earn a few hours in a Tomcat as a "reward."

    • @mpcp27

    • @matchesburn
      @matchesburn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it depends on the aircraft in question. Most do have toggles that allow for simultaneous or selected ejection. Part of the reason why this is done is exactly for situations like this where you don't want to lose an aircraft because someone accidentally punched out.
      By the way? This incident, like many in JAG, is based on a real incident.

    I so dislike it when they show a pilot and WSO without their masks on during flight in a television show or movie. It is done just so they get a pretty guy or girl closeup shot. In real life our pilots were mask on from chock to chock. The air traffic controllers so dislike listening to the ambient cockpit noises due to a machoman pilot and WSO having dangling masks. It is a safety violation as if you eject above a certain altitude your oxygen supply is now venting into the atmosphere and doing you no good. You also probably have some nice head bruises due to getting hit with a flapping in the wind mask.
