Nursing school policy is that the scrubs can’t be too fitting (can’t be flattering or hug our curves) but yet the hospital policy says they can’t be too baggy or loose. I lost 50 lbs and couldn’t really figure out my size yet and I got yelled at for baggy scrubs at work.
Ours made us look like Target employees (red scrub top and khaki scrub bottoms with white shoes). When we were trying to round everyone up on the floor in order to go to lunch, or we couldn't find someone, we would call a "code khaki" lmfao!
I read somewhere that in Russia, a lot of hospital and nursing school are funded by orthodox church so the nurse kept the original scrubs to play tribute to it. It could be that because it really looks like Russian scrubs
The last one has to be an infection control nightmare, seriously. How could you properly hand wash? Bare below the elbows? And what sort of just plain old dirt do skirts that long track from room to room?
I went to school at the University of Miami in the early 1970s. We were so excited because we were some of the first student nurses to be able to wear pants. It was also the time of knit polyester (anyone remember men’s leisure suits?). So our school had bright highlighter yellow knit polyester dresses or the choice of pant suits with a tall nurses’ cap with the UM script emblem and orange and green stripes (our school colors). Sorry I don’t have a picture but by today’s standards this would be as bad as it gets. 🤣🤣🤣 I’m retired now - nurse Pam

50 yrs ago, my nursing school uniform was a white blouse with a blue pinstriped pinafore. The buttons were removable so that the items could be washed and starched....and ironed on a mangle. The hospital laundered them for us. The buttons clipped on with tiny cotterpins. When we bent over sometimes a button would separate from the pin and would be lanched across the room ! We always carried extra buttons and pins in our pockets.
5:10 So that is my school uniform and I just wanted to share that about a month after this video came out they retroactively changed our uniforms to a much nicer gray and maroon (Cherokee infinity style) so my cohort is the last group to suffer through all white and bibs! THANK YOU NURSE BLAKE !
fyi for those unaware- that last lady in the “nun” looking outfit? her nursing uniform is actually likely heavily inspired or based off of the actual nurse uniforms worn by VAD nurses during WWI. i personally really like VAD nurse uniforms, and i quite like (though less so) the lady’s student uniform.
I think it's cool but imagine you're in the ER and you see her doing CPR on your loved one or something. It looks like a costume, not to mention it looks impossible to stay clean in it
I find the last nursing uniform kind of fascinating. It actually kind of looks like what the VAD nurse in WW1 would wear. It is kind of cool that they are wearing it, but as far as functionality goes, those sleeves wouldn't allow for proper hand-washing and the skirt needs to be hemmed up for mobility. I do love the history behind it though!
My sister in law and my friend are both in nursing school. They just wear scrubs in a specific color for each year that’s different than the local hospitals color. Why in the world do they still do nursing school uniforms?
My nursing school uniform was horrific! Red/ white striped shirt, that had a Peter pan collar, a white vest or jacket, or the shirt with a jumper that made everybody who wore it look like they were 6 feet wide.
When I went to nursing school I just had Navy blue scrubs that said UC Irvine health on them. The staff nurse uniforms were light blue for one week. Then they switched to Navy. I was confused for a staff rn constantly. Was horrible for patient safety but it was probably good for me.
Mine looked like the last one in style, only the skirt was mid-calf, sleeves to the elbow. The cap had to be starched by hand, and the buttons were clipped on. The buttons had to be removed for every wash. It was extremely uncomfortable for me as I have a short waistline, and the band went across my rib cage. Ugh! I went to nursing school in the early 80’s.
Interesting that nursing uniforms historically have been copies of maids, waitresses, cooks, nuns,candy store attendants ...kind of shows you how much they have been valued.

I actually love the caps on nurses (now I actually have never seen one on in person) but now days it is so hard to tell between the diffrent hospital facility. Evan the difference between dentist, veterinarians, doctors, and even in home health care aides.

Of course we had to wear white stockings and white uniform shoes I don't think anyone had their pictures taken . I did like my hat which had a red over a blue velvet ribbon attached with a silver seagull on each side.
I can't help it, I still really like the traditional nurses cap (looks-wise). They're totally impractical, cumbersome, and a pain but I still like them 🤷😄

I had to wear a cap in nursing school and as a nurse back in the 70’s. Trust me, they are uncomfortable at best and really painful at worst. It was a stiff hard cap and would get caught in the curtains between beds and was real easy for combative or confused patients to grab and try to pull off. You kept it on by making a large pin curl on the top of your head and secure it with 2 bobby-pins. You would use another bobby-pin to attach the cap. So if it got caught or grabbed, it was literally pulling out your hair. I get shivers just remembering it!

You had to sew student nurse, school patch on left sleeve. No caps, we were modern. Unfortunately my first job demanded a cap, had to go to a Nursing store and just buy one that stayed on my head since none affiliated with my school.
Lol my first year of nursing school first day of clinical. We all had scrub jackets. I was the only one who was smart enough to have there name imbroeded into the jacket. At the end of the day we were looking for our jackets put on a cart the teacher had. I separated mine in didn't pile it up loose everyone else.I grabbed mine right away but everyone else had their jackets mixed up. 3 days later 3 students came down with a weird rash it seemed to come from the jackets cuz someone had a contagious rash and it spread. I didn't get it cuz my jacket I separated it from everyone else. Plus it had my name on it so it made it easy to fine.
Getting my nursing uniform soon and honestly don’t think it’s that bad. Blue scrub bottoms with white tops embroidered with the nursing school emblem. And the lovely scrubs jacket embroidered as well. The white shoes are honestly the worst part and I don’t think it’s too awful lol

In my hospital everyone no matter if nursing student or chief of medicine wears the same: plain white basic scrubs that actually look kind of flattering but I always thought it’s boring and wanted to have a nursing school uniform. Now I think I’m happy with my boring scrubs 😂

In my hospital everyone no matter if nursing student or chief of medicine wears the same: plain white basic scrubs that actually look kind of flattering but I always thought it’s boring and wanted to have a nursing school uniform. Now I think I’m happy with my boring scrubs 😂
