      I don’t know you but thank you, Sylvia 😊. It takes a certain kind of person to be a nurse: someone with nerves of steel but a heart of pure gold. 💕. I spent over a year in hospital after my life turned to hell and if it wasn’t for all of the nurses helping me and getting me through the hard times (especially when my parents weren’t able to be there) and gently pushing me to push myself a bit further, I would have lost it completely.
      The beyond hard and endless work you as nurses do is just astounding AND outstanding and I really truly hope you know how much 99.9% of us truly appreciate everything you do to help and comfort us.. even when you’ve left your private issues at home, you always put patients first and I just admire how amazing you all are.

      @@Softnsweetbb the answer to the first part or the second? For an MRI they (the MRI people) will call me and ask if the patient is going to need anxiety meds before going, ask if they're on oxygen, tell me what time the patient will go, etc. Then somebody from transport comes up to get the patient when it's time for the MRI. It's a lot simpler than I originally thought haha. The most annoying part is if a patient does require anxiety meds (like if they're claustrophobic) and they have none ordered and so I have to call the doctors in the middle of the night to get an order. The nightshift hospitalists are nice but the orthopedic and neurospine surgeons who are on call are usually jerks and I hate having to call them!! Some patients are patients of the hospitalist and it's super easy to page them, I just send a text page. Others are patients of ortho or neurospine and it's a much more annoying process. I have to call the call center, ask the operator who's on call, have them tell the provider to call me, wait for the provider to call me, then finally answer the phone when they do call and endure their annoyed attitude that I woke them up in the middle of the night for a non-medical emergency. Good times!

    On my first job I was putting in a Foley with my preceptor and the patient asked, "are you a starter?" (Wut?) I thought she was asking "are you starting?" So I said "Yes.☺" When she proceeded to freak out, I realized by "starter" she meant "new" or "beginner." The problem is when people are feeling sick and vulnerable the last thing they want to hear is that you haven't already been doing this for a million years. Being a new nurse is hard.

  • @perfectlyimperfect2368
    @perfectlyimperfect2368 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    This is why whenever I'm a patient I always try and be super patient with my nurse because I know they have so much going on. Literally the only time I hit my call button is if I need meds or my i.v is beeping. And even then if they turn my nurse alarm off but never show I be sure to give it about 30 minutes before I try again. I'm always really patient too when I have a student nurse who is struggling. I always tell them it's ok take your time. Can't imagine how overwhelming that first shift is!

    New nurse here : for anyone nervous about starting here’s a few things that I did that I hope you can laugh about and use as reassurance ..
    1. Called to order a meal for a patient. Told the food service people my last name instead of the patients last name .. my preceptor laughed so hard
    2. Accidentally told the resident I loved him over the ascom instead of ‘thank you bye’ like a normal human being.. I went for the love you bye line 🤦🏽‍♀️..forever want to die lol
    3. Told PT they could get my patient to the chair when he was actually pretty obtunded and couldn’t move at all 🤦🏽‍♀️
    4. On my first day I kept accidentally telling my patients I was their nursing student instead of their nurse 🤦🏽‍♀️... needless to say my patients were pretty confused
    5. Accidentally told my patient that I just needed to hear his pulse .. while I went to palpate the dorsalis PeDis

      Don't worry, my first day at clinical I was so nervous about seeing my first patient that my instructor had to introduce us for me. Now I've been an RN for almost fifteen years. Some tips that's helped me over the years. Address the patient as Mr. or Ms. Smith, don't just automatically call them by their first name. I find especially the baby boomers, older generation see it as a sign of respect. When a patient asks what time you will be back in their room don't say ten minutes because after nine minutes they will say where are you. Say, "I'll be back later." Remember that you are only one person with two hands so you can only do one thing at a time. You don't need to know everything at the top of your head, say, "I need to look that up". The first time I introduce myself to my patient I say with a smile, "Hi, my name is -----, I'm going to be your nurse today." And I might wave at them a little to make sure they see me. Usually if you start off in a friendly, happy way like that you get a nicer response and build report with the patient. When I give their am meds I'll will ask how they feel or if they were able to get some sleep last night. Again showing you care and getting a feel for the patient. Even if I get in report from the previous nurse that the patient is nasty I pretend I'm going in with a clean slate and introduce myself with a smile and little wave. I find it helps more often than not. Just do the best you can. Don't take any negativity you encounter personally and be patient with yourself! Trust your instincts and ask questions. I've been an RN almost fifteen years and am still learning! You can do it! Good luck! ; )

    You are awesome! I’m a CNA at a hospital, and when first started I was the exact same! I always needed confirmation to make sure what I was doing was correct. Side note: I start nursing school in the fall and feel nervous. Is there any advice you can give?

      LAUREN trust your gut and don't be afraid to figure things out on your own if it's not a life or death situation. Also take advantage of down time In clinicals by getting use to the wows if it's a different program, research drugs, talk to your primary nurse if they give you the time of day (don't be upset if some are assholes & blow u off) jump on the chance to do a bunch of drug administrations no matter how overwhelming it might feel. Don't fall into the trap of bs-ing clinicals by chatting w. Peers. Always spend your time learning as much as you can.

      Congratulations Lauren! I'm a PCA at a hospital too and I start my prerequisites this fall for nursing. A lot of the nurses tell me that I have a huge advantage because i work in a hospital setting, but I'm not sure about that because I know everyone is not doing things the way they teach you in school, so....

      @@crystaledwards6610 you have an advantage because the name carries. The fact that you are currently working in a hospital setting before classes does give you a leg up. Even though the ppl @ the hospital you work @ isn't necessarily adhering to the correct standards.

    Been RN BSN CCRN for 30 years...the stories I could tell. I loved preventing new nurses. I didn't just relegate them to bedpans and bathing. I hated when my preceptor used me as a second CNA,luckily, I had a few darn good nurses who taught me the ropes. Like ADVOCATE FOR THE PATIENT!! I have had my ass chewed out by so many doctors in my career that I should be ass less!!!😂 .new nurses, you MUST call those physcians,you must even call them out. We know the oatients, they read a second of the last doctors progress note. And READ THE PROGRESS NOTES!! Share them with the families!! Families,if you recruit them, can be a huge help. Listen to families. They know if dad or mom are exhibiting something new or unusual. I have saved more than one patient by calling the physician Nd telling them what a family member has told me.They are scared of the doctors, some are, its too bad. Fams van be a pain, most are not.
