    Strange I never took you for an idiot , but doing this drive was not an urgent thing to do and could have been postponed , so you can thank your lucky stars that you both got back safely ! If you were to do that in the UK , and the cops stopped you , they would have had you in court PDQ , for dangerous driving and failure to observe the safety regulations governing all motor vehicles . Plus if you had have crashed this car causing the loss off life of other road users , you would have been charged with involuntary manslaughter , plus your insurance company would have not paid you out on your policy ! You are suppossed to set a good example here , by behaving responsibly which you most certainly did not . Shame on you !

    My wife and I have matching 2015, S P85 Ds. Both have lifetime Super Charging. So we plan on breakfast of lunch when we road trip and park the Tesla at a super charger and go have breakfast or lunch. We say: "We are letting Elon pay for our meal" while we charge up. It works perfect for us and it is a simple adjustment. Sometimes we pick a place that is 1/2 mile from the chargers and we get a nice walk in as well. You adjust your life style.

  • @greengrass89
    @greengrass89 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Someone else probably said this already, but older Model S charges relatively slowly, and the first couple charging sessions were at version 2 superchargers. They force split power when you’re charging on the same power cabinet, with someone in the stall next to you. (1a, 1b) Version 3 would do much better, but you’re still limited by the older car. Great video and good information!

  • @epcalderhead
    @epcalderhead ปีที่แล้ว +4

    We all need a friend like Mike. I can remember the days we'd take our Prius to my in-laws and back on one day. That was 6 hours of driving. It may not sound like a lot but that's six hours in a Prius. Efficient as it was brutal. Having taken out Tesla Model 3 on a half dozen long road trips I don't care it it take a little longer compared to a gas car. The auto pilot and comfort make up for that. The car is now driving itself 95% of the time on our trips. That's huge in fighting fatigue.
    I was impressed how realistic and fair you were to an 11-year-old car with nearly 300k miles and Teslas in general. Now I want to take road trips *because* the 3 is so much more fun. You are spot on how much better the newer cars are for road tripping. Our average charging time is around 15 minutes but I favor short hops to keep fresh when doing long drives. You are spot on with costs with home vs. Supercharging costs. For our last two major road trips the first in 2022 was equal to the cost of a 35mph gas car. This year's trip was about $100 cheaper than gas. It's not enough either way to make cost a factor.
    Looking forward to more of your content and future trips with Mike.

    • @mr3745
      @mr3745 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This right here. Autopilot is a huge factor on long trips. Even though you have to be vigilant, just eliminating the constant muscle motions involved with holding the lane leaves you a lot more refreshed. Combined with more frequent but short stops, it's a different kind of road-tripping but I find it actually far preferable than in my old gas car. Total time might be a little longer, although it's hard to compare apples to apples because pumping gas is not something you can walk away from, whereas the car can charge while you do something else. Five minutes to fuel and 10 minutes to go to the bathroom and get a snack vs 15 minutes to charge is the same thing. Add perhaps one more stop in the EV...if it takes me 15 minutes longer to get to my destination but I am totally refreshed and it cost me less, that's a win.

    • @BadBackOz
      @BadBackOz 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are plenty of efficient gas cars that are cheaper and as comfortable or more comfortable than a Model 3. Gas is better for long trips. EV is better for short.

      Then you drive old cars whch don't have the thick A/B/C pillars which make outward visibility challenging. Newer cars are just shaped like a door wedge, so all you see behind you is the sky. I enjoyed this video, but I wanted to mention something I have not seen from other comments yet. It's the fact that your Tesla route guidance guided you to St. Louis to charge your car. And from what I heard, St. Louis isn't all too safe. If you were refueling a gas car, you would be hanging around for around 2-5 minutes, while you were recharging your car for almost 20 minutes.
    Two points:
    1. Not every ev owner is going to be familiar with the area they are going to when charging (probably not good when it's a place like St. Louis).
    2. When going to sketchy places to refuel, it's better to be out in a couple of minutes than almost 20 minutes.
    Stuff to think about if intending on doing ev road trips.

Example, in my USA state it costs me .05 cents per mile in fuel costs.. A gas car, you ask? $01.85+ per mile. Repairs in the last 01yr? ZERO. In this case, the EV fuel costs are higher, due to many factors, that much is correct. Much like a gas car buying petrol at $04.50 per gallon at "X" place and $03.35 at place "Y". Oh, cost to buy my USED, low milage EV? round numbers-$33K

And we can fill-up anywhere in a few minutes, don't have to navigate to specific fueling places or worry about the fueling place not having working equipment or being crowded and have to wait 30 minutes or an hour just to use a charger. EV's are fine for local driving where you can recharge the vehicle at home overnight. MWMike is correct, EV only good for short trips, having to plan each recharging stop on a longer trip is ridiculous experience.

    An 11 year old EV with 300K miles on it, using old technology and charging speeds from when they first came out over a decade ago (which were significantly slower than today's) went on this road trip with no issues in this dangerously cold, 2,800 mile long road trip. And by the way, don't follow Tesla's navigation's charging directions too much. It tends to be overly conservative and wants you to charge far too often -- especially in cold weather.
    Yeah, it's old with an original short range (compared to today's EVs) which gets even less in this type of cold and WITHOUT the efficiency of a heat pump, which causes you to charge more often and pay more. None of which are an issue on modern EVs.
    And all you paid was $7,800 dollars for it?

    Hey Randy, new subscriber here. I remember you from the Uber Man days and recognized you right away. I just wanted to give the viewers a quick cold weather charging tip. Look at the screen and verify whether its a V2 or V3 supercharger because if it is 150kw it will split your charge rate in half if you park next to someone to charge whereas if you go to a 250kw charger, you will get that full charge rate. All things considered for that old of a car thats pretty impressive for the cold charge rate

    Three weeks ago I bought my wife a brand new 2023 Hyundai sonata hybrid. It had 14 miles on it with a full tank of gas. We have 542 miles on it write now and have spent $47.00 on 87 octa.octane gas so far. This is my first hybrid car and so far I'm loving it. Have not taken it on a trip yet. But it's supposed to get 50 miles to the gallon. And trust me Randy. It will shit and get for a little 4 cylinder.

      I have a 2020 Hyundai ionic hybrid SE and I can get 65-70mpg at 55mph cruising in the right lane on the freeway. If I need to get somewhere quick and need to drive 75-80mph I usually get 50-55mpg. Best car I have owned so far. The only electric car I would want is the company Aptara that are making the most efficient electric car that makes its own range. In California Aptara will be impossible to beat cost wise.

    We have an I3, and we road trip it from Houston to Texhoma. We have a 17rex with the 33kwh battery. We go though West Houston, College Station, Waco, FT Worth, to Wichita Falls. We stop 4 times, twice for free. It takes up 9 hours to get there. We do use the REX sometimes because we don’t feel like stopping. It’s not bad, sometimes it takes that long with the ICE. It typically saves us $300 in gas round trip because we have a SUV.

    I’ll be real careful running that heater without the blower running you might burn out the resistive element. It will overheat and burn itself out if it doesn’t have the blower keeping the temperature at spec.

    • @joebass5163
      @joebass5163 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) heater. The hotter it gets the more resistance it creates so it is self regulating. It won't overheat.

    Considering that I am looking for a used EV or Hybrid car for my wife soon, I do appreciate you and Mike taking the time to test out both types of cars and and being honest with them. It helps me to expect what I will be dealing with regarding their pros and cons (and determining which type of vehicle will be best for us). Glad you both got through that nasty weather safely!

    I saw a Mach E fishtailing in the snow yesterday. Electric torque rear motor in the snow is a bit iffy. The person did a good job not crashing. My first thought was at least it still drives like a Mustang.
