Your best video yet in my opinion. Such a wonderful collection you've shared and a wealth of information for anyone interested in collecting Sovereigns. After just picking up my first last week (1918-I GV), I feel it's going to be a life-long pursuit. Thanks for sharing Numi! Brilliant work. - Jester
Numi got me into sovereigns and his advice to buy March book was the best way to start get educated book gives you guide to rarity I mostly have silver but numi gives you great guide to which sovs to buy which I followed thanks numi for the wisdom you share
Brilliant channel, excellent episode, I've recently bought two proof half sovereigns, looking forward to buying my first 100 year old gold sovereign very soon.
As a beginner try and get Sovereigns of the British Empire by captain F pridmore although old now, it tells you all about the Branch mints, and also gives you mintage figures. Marshes book is good, but you may find it a little advanced for you.
Great video. Thanks for sharing your beautiful coins. I don't yet own any soverigns, but, having watched so many of your videos I am going to collect them.
Many people have asked me why are so many sovereigns in mint condition are not worn. The reason is very simple many gold sovereigns never left bank vaults. Working people never had gold sovereigns in the old days, they heard about them, and may have seen one, but were never able to own one. Because of this, they never became worn, but many have edge nicks and abbrassions due to being in mint bags. Over the years collectors dealers slabbing companies and now bullion dealers have all gone through them with loops, and they all now sell at premiums from worn pieces. The best pieces in the mint bags being choice sell for a lot more money. The half sovereign is different. Although higher grades are always wanted, one does have to make an allowance, because working people did use them a lot, and so many became worn. All branch pieces are now rare to very rare Perth and Melbourne being the rarest.
The halves are rare because they were removed from circulation more and replaced by the mint more often. However fewer people have an interest in halves so that provided a counter balance
Halve sovereigns are not rare, only Australian pieces, but all halves in general are scarcer then full Sovereigns depending on what pieces they are.@@Numistacker
Numistacker I am not sure where you got your information concerning worn half sovereign were replaced, but that was not the case. My Royal mint files which I have concerning Full and half sovereigns does not say anything about any of this. However many early worn sovereign, held by the Bank of England in 1895 were taken in and melted down, to produce the 1892 half sovereign. This year was the only year, that produced the highest number of half sovereigns produced, just over 13million.However even thought this was highest number produced, they are far short from the huge numbers produced by the London mint from 1911 to 1915. There were four dies cut of the 1892 half sovereign that is why there is differences of the shield being higher and lower. This was also the case with the Australia jubilee halfs, because the dies were made at the Royal mint, and shipped out to the Branch mints Australia.
I have both the 1916 and 1917 London mint. You may be interested to know that their are two types of the 1917 Sovereigns. one has a wide milling, and the other is narrow. Both the 1916 and the 1917 were as you said, melted by the American mint because it was under their constitution to melt British gold Sovereigns, for payment. The 1925 London sovereign also had two types wide milling and narrow milling. They were struck in 1949 1950 1951 and 1952 but dated 1925, to make payments for military arms from America, Which we used in the Korean war. The Royal mint decided not to make a die of the then king George V1 as they were told by the MOD to cut costs, so a recut die of George V was used, Hope you find this of interest.
i reposted it as some of the end of the video was missing. There is still a cut out 4/5ths through when my phone battery went onto 20% and cut out the recording but this one is a little better.
Excellent video. I love sovereigns. I mostly bought bullion sovereigns until recently. I'm now focusing on proofs. When I've finished collecting proofs, I'll move into key dates.
The art work on the coins is what started me collecting coins. your gold keeps me looking here in the states for sovereigns. every once in a while I'll stumble upon them. I really like them too, shawn thx for the info, your very knowledgeable
Numistacker I didn't realize how in expensive the sovereigns were compared to eagles & buffalo. I think that I'll be buying more of them each month over eagles, shawn
Great video and one I'm sure could easily be a 10hr series. When watching the ultimate guide to Pandas, I thought, I wonder if Numi will do a guide to sovereigns....
had to watch this one again,..the tiniest mintmark can make all the difference. i think the japanese vej mintmark soverign 2020 will be one to try and get. the india soverigns grade well
How much does grading cost please? I bought a 1877 half sovereign and it’s in remarkable condition (in my unqualified opinion) and have pondered having it graded but not sure if it’s worth it or not. Your advice would be appreciated (I take full responsibility for my own actions and won’t hold you accountable for any advice given 😂). Thanks
I just checked my little collection and found one 1911 full sovereign in there. Is it the year what collectors looking for? Did I get your video right? Thanks a lot.
+Carl Duckett I would love to gradually move backward in time and add a couple of guineas and some older proofs but then you are in the $5000 to $25000 market that's a lot more serious.

I worked in a bank in the 60s and collected coins, especially leading up to decimalisation, and got some lovely rarish coins, e.g. EF 1905 2/6 unfortunately no gold! I was then always short of cash....and sold them....for only a few pounds!
Very informative video. I request you improve your audio. Your videos are very frustrating when good topics, coins but I can not hear what you are saying, great work though!
Nonsense! Well, or I may have that disease as too : ) Curious, as almost all yours are slabbed NGC, are you considering sending that GV Proof slabbed PCGS off to NGC to be reslabbed?
It might happen. PCGS have better coin photography than NGC but I always have the Trueview pics of it anytway. It doesnt fit my NGC box so it may be up for cross grading but no rush.
Yes the one I have is a shield, thanks to info you mentioned in this video I found the Bentley collection catalog on line that said R5 is this correct?

I’ve been recently collecting Sovereigns with great enthusiasm and your videos have added to the enjoyment of this collecting!
This is definitely the best video I’ve seen on collecting sovereigns and highly recommended for amateur and professional sovereign collectors.

Stunning-!
Inspiring video, makes want to purchase more Sovereigns.....today! :)
There is so much history and interest with Sovereigns and also they can be pure bullion if needed.

Sorry I was explaining the huge number of Sovereigns produced from 1911 to 1915 not half sovereigns as being much lower.

Great history. Are there any photographic sources that show the wide and narrow milling?
Really enjoyed this video Russell, found it very insightful.

Excellent video. I love sovereigns. I mostly bought bullion sovereigns until recently. I'm now focusing on proofs. When I've finished collecting proofs, I'll move into key dates.
I'm aiming at getting one of each sovereign from 1880 to 2021 by buying random year sales online.
Got so many swaps!
Excellent video Numi. I will definitely be referring back to this one whan I add sovereigns to my stack. 👍
Thanks very much SBC )) i am still hoping to add a few more Sovereigns to my collection over the next few years
The art work on the coins is what started me collecting coins. your gold keeps me looking here in the states for sovereigns. every once in a while I'll stumble upon them. I really like them too, shawn
thx for the info, your very knowledgeable
Sovereigns can be a good buy in the USA as everyone is looking for those golden eagles...
Numistacker I didn't realize how in expensive the sovereigns were compared to eagles & buffalo. I think that I'll be buying more of them each month over eagles, shawn
Great video numi your on top form sir, I bought a 200th Anniversary proof sovereign this weekend :)
I hope you enjoy your proof as much as I enjoy mine.
I have a few bullion sovereigns. I really like the design and the history of these coins. My concern is liquidating them in the US.
I really like buying random sovereign options off of Jm bullion.
I never know what to expect
Thanks numisfor the guide which I follow
Thanks for sharing, great collection
Great video and one I'm sure could easily be a 10hr series. When watching the ultimate guide to Pandas, I thought, I wonder if Numi will do a guide to sovereigns....
Im thinking Britannias and French Gold might be good for a video but I dont have enough French gold to do it justice yet ))
you have way too many nice coins if there is such a thing! great video thanks for posting.
I have a sovereign from 1909. I’m finding mixed info on the possible value.
But I am interested in finding the right buyer for it
Beautiful, superb & wonderful.
some very nice sovereign you got there
Video quality wasn't great but the information provided was very helpful 👍
Are there are key dates or mints mints you should look for even if collecting bullion type sovereigns?
learnt many things, thank you.
Great video thanks Numi :) I think the sov bug has bitten me as well now :p
I like to get these few ones.
had to watch this one again,..the tiniest mintmark can make all the difference. i think the japanese vej mintmark soverign 2020 will be one to try and get. the india soverigns grade well

Really enjoying the videos! Where would you say is the best place to buy close to spot in the UK?
Hatton Garden Metals
I just checked my little collection and found one 1911 full sovereign in there. Is it the year what collectors looking for? Did I get your video right? Thanks a lot.
You have a great collection there, have you thought about collecting older coins , such as medieval hammered sovereigns or guineas ?
+Carl Duckett I would love to gradually move backward in time and add a couple of guineas and some older proofs but then you are in the $5000 to $25000 market that's a lot more serious.
Great vid numi
Thanks PS thanks for the comment
How do you get coins graded , is their a service or guide that you can use ? And if so can you tell me where ? I am in London uk. Many thanks
Is a spade guinea different from a shield back?
I've always wanted to collect more sovereigns but my finances don't really let me. I do have an 1899 1/2 sovereign though, and I love it!
I have been thinking for a while that sovereigns can be a better bet than modern silver with all its spotting issues.
Numistacker I've had that same thought. Makes my buy with more confidence when I do buy gold every now and again.
I like the old one.s got some proofs ! I collect across the board !
Great video! What do you consider a serious colector/stacker of gold sovereigns? #100? around 23,5oz au. (including 1/2 sov, 2 and 5)
That is a pretty serious affliction 23.5 Oz ))
Your answer is in a negative way, right? So forget oz.
100 sov is common or really out there? Good goal for a stacker/collector?
I buy for my retirement only.
I have the 11Elizabeth 1958 in gold I’m looking for buyer
2% over spot for bullion sovs tell me where please ?
Often at Hatton Garden Metals Buy they have put prices up recently
Best place to buy these?
What does graded it mean?
Better now that is complete!
Tudor Black Bay for the win :-)

Yes if they invest when they are 18 and keep for 20/30 years they can build real assets

Maybe I have grading disease
you do provide rationale (low mintage, etc).
Nonsense! Well, or I may have that disease as too : ) Curious, as almost all yours are slabbed NGC, are you considering sending that GV Proof slabbed PCGS off to NGC to be reslabbed?

Are you just not interested in George 4th shields?
I love George IV shields

I never liked the 2005, it looks flat and lacks detail.
