It's a shame Venus's dedication to her grandmother didn't make it into the movie. It's relatable and admirable, and sadly missing from the story until now.

Venus's parts are sad for so many reasons. She mentions her transition and how it affects her everyday life and her hopes to pursue a modelling carreer. Moreover she implies her family is far more accepting than the audience may think.
The latter is especially heartbreaking, considering her nephew said the same thing years later; her family called her Venus and her trans identity was the open secret nobody would talk about. Them letting her move away from their small homophobic community was most likely their way of indirect support in those hard times.

Her boyfriend, Rico, was murdered 8 months before she was, by a drug dealer who shot him in the chest. He sensed something wrong and told her to wait in the car waiting for him. He confronted the dealer (a woman), that he thought the coke was baking soda.... but didn’t expect her to pull out a gun. She ran off, while Venus cried on his chest. The dealer was never found. May Rico Rest In Peace. Lil Papi from Pose looks uncannily like Rico.

Many people don't know that Jenny Livingston had been recording footage for Paris is Burning for many years. I believe she started recording footage from the Balls in 1984 or maybe 85. The very first Ball I went to was spring of 85 which was a House of Omni Ball and Jenny was not recording at that ball. Maybe she past on that one but the Second Ball I went to in the fall of 85 Jenny was there recording with her crew. That was a Paris House of Dupree Ball and a lot of that Ball footage was in Paris is Burning Documentary.
Jenny Livingston probably had close to 7 years of footage and remember a ball was thrown a few times each year back in those days. Not familiar how often balls are thrown today. Possibly more often because balls have become so popular worldwide. It must have been a difficult job deciding what footage was going to make it and what footage wasn't but I believe Jenny had enough footage to make a serious. I say that because most movies are filmed in a few months and Jenny had been recording footage from the ball scene for 7 years approximately. That is a lot of footage. Dvd's can be sold with just extra footage on them now or put on an app. Nobody really buys Dvd's anymore, probably gave away my age there. LMFAO 🤣.
I say all this because I see many people have enjoyed these extra footage videos here on TH-cam. I know I have. It was fun seeing myself at 15 years old playing Lawyer with my Extravaganza family. I know the house spells it with an X now but that just goes to show you how long I've been a member. From the days when it was spelled with an E. LMFAO 🤣. I miss my old friends who have passed on and it was beautiful to be able to see them again on this footage. When we were all young and beautiful and just having a great time. New York City in the 1980's was incredible. The city might not have looked so good back then like it does today because of all this gentrification that has happened but it sure was an exciting time. Those years were some of the best years for night life and clubbing. There were many to pick from. Today there is barely a club scene in NYC. That I know of.

    • @venommiss6770
      @venommiss6770 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Tell it!! NYC back then was such a vibe. It came alive at night in a way that can’t be imagined even if we described it. The west side highway was far from what it looks like now. I hung out in the piers a few times, and lord how much fun we had! We didn’t need much and somehow the night was never long enough.

Jenny Livingston has about 8 years of ball footage and footage of us hanging out and many others. Many times she wouldn't ask if she can record. She would just walk up on us with her camera crew and many times we (the Extravaganzas) would not want to be recorded. Example, we had to tell her no before we started playing lawyer and we walked away. When we came back we let her record us playing lawyer and joking around. I'm glad we did that because we would have had some personal business on film and that wouldn't have been cool.

Oh the fun that was had at those piers! NYC in the late 80s and 90s was the best. It was rough but it made so many of us the wiser, the better! It truly was survival of the fittest. But you always found a way to have fun! No matter how dangerous it was. I’m a straight female and i would sneak off to the piers at the age of 14 with my gay best friend. I was the only one who knew he was gay (back then) and the piers provided him with a sense of freedom to be Himself. Oh the things we saw, 🤭, the fun we had! Long live these legendary children that paved the way! I wish I would have met them back then, but i was just a kids. You will live on forever. NYC is not the same now, but it was because of these legends that the kids no longer have to hide and are able to be free and be themselves. It’s sad they didn’t get to live and see how much they changed the world!

The movie is about the ballroom scene though. It's wasn't about their lives outside the balls.
And the criticism about the movie was mainly about the money they felt they didn't get. They had it in their mind that Jenni Livingston got wealthy off this movie.
They should have been proud of PIB. The movie didn't paint ANY of them in a negative, exploitive light. Plus they got something even better then more money. They got immortality. Just about everybody in this movie has died. Imagine how gagged they would be over the fact that people around the world know their names well into the 21st century.
Because of this movie none of them will EVER be forgotten.

To the people complaining that there were too many clips cut out of Paris Is Burning... you don’t really think they documented under two hours of footage and called it a day like they were following a script and storyboard? Of course they had to document a lot of footage and choose carefully what would help explain the ballroom scene to the general public and to the children who want to get in to the scene. You people acting like they took interviews in one week and Venus gets killed in the same exact week. It took them years of documenting these scenes.

this footage is amazing!!! thank you so much for sharing. there is so much beauty, vulnerability, realness in these outtakes. This definitely needs to be released officially as a compliment to Paris is Burning.

RIP Venus. She is lovely so innocent and full of hopes & dreams. We can only imagine what amazing things she could have achieved throughout her beautiful young life had it not been stolen by EVIL and cowardice. Venus is all of us trans women who are just little girls looking for love and acceptance.
Sadly where we look for that small bit of "love" or happiness from men who only use us as sex objects can kill us.
Her words are filled with so much hope & love, such a gentle soul. If only she knew how many people loved her and looked up to her and how many people she inspired. Venus we LOVE YOU FOREVER! RIP Angel XXX

@Cosmicacidtrip01 babes read the room 😬😬 yes, all women experience gender based violence, but trans women have to deal with both transphobia AND sexism and that’s a very different (and more often than not, worse and dangerous) experience than that of cis women. Which is what this documentary focusing on in the first place.
