    Look when you have people in charge of Magic who don't care about magic you're going to get bloat. All these people care about is how much money they can make and how big of bonus they can get. They don't care about the game they never played it. Yet they make decisions that affect production that stagnate the game. These people don't care if they kill magic, they will do what everyone else they do in management do, they blame the workers who actually love the game and move on to the next job to ruin that product. It's a revolving door that Ceo and top management does it's totally the American way. Destroy a product and still get paid. When you see and hear from the people at Wizard's who actually love the game, they help make the first thing that always comes to my mind is why are they not in charge, why are the people who spent time in the trenches in higher forms of management making decisions that players will like and feel happy about.
    You said that magic is safe for now, and your right; people love the game and even through all the crap people don't want to abandonee their love, but just like all bad relationships people will eventually say goodbye to Wizards crappy upper management ruining the game.
    I wish the employees would break off and make there own game.

    The thing is Magic is the only game that heavily rely on the card game. Other IP already have established brand, they have merchandise or movies to gain the popularity.

    Pokemon's strength is its ubiquitous IP. Magic's strength is a gameplay system that's extremely versatile and hard to deviate from. FaB did a good job of making a distinct game, but the gameplay arguably has a lot less variance than MTG.
    Not to knock on Yugioh, but I can see it losing its standing over time, especially as One Piece rises in the ranks (and if especially they can get their supply down). It doesn't have the IP strength of Pokemon and the fundamental game design lends itself to insane power creep and tier 0 decks.

  • @RussWRN
    @RussWRN 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I think you are very wrong. Lorcana and Star Wars Unlimited are going to peel off many casual players from Magic. The core competitive crowd may stay but many of those folks are heading towards FaB. Magic has been squeezing money from its players for too long so many players are ready to abandon ship.

    Just ran a star wars draft at my apartment where 16 people showed up! Half were magic players and the other half were completely new to the tcg world. I would play more MTG standard but nobody wants to play it in person. At every pre-release I go to I ask people if they would play in person buy they all say they've spent too much on Arena to start investing in paper magic.

    • @ChickenMcThiccken
      @ChickenMcThiccken 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      im glad i started playing arena as a free player back in 2020. the only time i EVER spend money on arena is for the mastery pass. but 4 years later; even still as a free player; ive accumulated a ton of cards on arena. however, because of arena; i got back into collecting magic cards; and this is from a 20 year hiatus previously; where i sold everything as a young adult; regretted it; and now have a much more robust physical collection than i ever had in my whole life; so with some bad there is also some good :)

  • @stephencook8398
    @stephencook8398 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Magic's biggest fail points:
    1. MTG Arena
    2. Printing too many sets per year
    3. Not promoting store play well
    4. Embracing too many formats (Should only be Standard, Modern, Vintage, and Commander, and 1 or 2 draft formats)
    Star Wars Unlimited is carefully crafting a player base by being thoughtful around these items.

    MtG is just too big. For it to be in any danger it would need to be harmed so badly that the 30th debacle would be microscopic in comparison. I don't even think getting rid of the Reserved List would be damaging enough to make it fall.

    MTG is huge and will continue to maintain its position. However FAB continues to grow and develop and its new release in May will be printed in Japanese for the first time. FAB at the moment is definitely for players but collectors will now start to get increasingly involved buying original older booster boxes now the game is 5 years old and maturing.

  • @grasshopper1153
    @grasshopper1153 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Maybe the Universes Beyond stuff does well because it is tied to Commander predominantly. Maybe if WotC actually cared about the competitive community and did not create 100 competitive formats to make things confusing and convalluted, they could sell more boxes of in-universe product. Instead, competitive players jump ship to other companies who treat them better (in terms of prize support, market research, fewer competing formats in the game, etc) and/or have better lore and characters and/or have better game mechanics. Personally, I'm probably sticking to MTG because one thing MTG has got going for it is it won't die, and it will always be there for me, like that favorite, worn out and torn t-shirt you refuse to throw out and you wear for days on end without washing it.

    • @Aztracity
      @Aztracity 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Multiple comp formats is one of magics strengths, what isn't is how little effort wotc does to keep prices down. Hell even pauper decks are getting expensive now. i like the differences of playing pioneer to modern or standard to pauper. It also allows for cards that wouldn't have a home in one format to be defining in another.

    I wouldn’t say I’m the huge magic player. I just started going to in person events this year but I was very excited to continue doing so even though the sets were meh. Star Wars has me doing a complete 180 on that. I do not care about anything magic anymore. I’m looking at two sealed booster boxes I still have from magic and debating if I just want to open them up and sell them to buy more Star Wars cards…

    The excess is killing Magic. Pokemon sets are like, 300 cards total INCLUDING foils. Magic has a new set basically every month and it's always like 500 cards (excluding traditional foils) with like 4 subsets and a bunch of reprints. They're fostering apathy in their fanbase

    I immediately understood how to play Lorcana and Star Wars because I know Magic, Pokémon, and Yugioh. Even going back to Versus. The IP isn’t enough if you’re just going to replicate the blueprint. I feel Pokemon has stood the test of time because they created rules that are the furthest from Magic while having a strong IP.

    I think One Pieace and Starwars are more of a closed target to make them important but not going for king place, while Lorcana, I think that one is going to look for much more if they evolve it in the right way quick, it has a lot of potential to go to battle big 3 in short term (give it 3 to 4 years) but at the end it will depend on how MTG and Pokemon keep their strategies.

    I've moved on to Lorcana. I'll probably check out Star Wars if I find product near me and people playing, otherwise I won't bother.
    I still love Magic, but Hasbro has destroyed it. I will continue to buy singles from time to time, especially if I can find some actual Modern or Pioneer tournaments near me. But I hate Commander and the focus on that format has pushed me away even more than I already was. It also makes finding the aforementioned tourneys much harder to find. So I've moved on to games that are focusing on the 1v1 that I actually want from my card games.

    I started my TCG hobby with Magic. Recently Magic is too much of a 'feel bad' to keep playing, like every aspect of this game sucks. The prices are too high. The powercreep is outrageous. Power imbalance when playing pickup games with strangers / the rule 0 issue. Badly designed recent limited sets. Butt-ugly artwork, including 'premium desirable cards' that look horrible (think MKM dossier showcase, or LOTR Poster cards). Playing and engaging with MTG is a feels-bad. I've splashed out to other TCGs. If I had to name one in particular, I am recently really hype about PokemonTCG, I build a deck since rotation just happened and I want to start playing PokemonTCG at my LGS instead of Magic.

    Locana and Star Wars lack real art which is sad, but wotc is too greedy and they are alienating their core players by raising the prices too much. My local game store is being overrun by new players not playing magic but something else.

    The games I play or played
    Magic is clear. I don't like how some people bring easy wincons to casuals but ehhhh
    Yu-Gi-Oh is god awful to play, too quick, I think the players are like football fans ( *toxic* )
    Pokémon finally upped the pull rates and now the scalpers are annoyed ahahahahah
    One piece is struggling to get all their players at events and need to up their printing. Bin off Digimon or dragonball and focus on your ridiculously well selling card game that is the only game that has a chance to invade the big 3
    Cardfight vanguard their company don't care about the players. Dumb pull rates, horrible stock, stupid and toxic game mechanics. The prize support is "getting better".
    And their V format has had I think 0 support for over a year? Beside promo's
    Haven't played flesh and blood because I have never seen a community
    Weiss should be far more popular. It's really easy to buy playsets if it isn't 5+ years old but it's a relatively balanced game

    Magic is on the downslope until hasbro sells it to a company that can make it fun and affordable again. It could turn around very very quickly if handled correctly.
    Lorcana is a bad game and unavailability and will die.
    Star Wars unlimited is the most fun ccg out there right now. Has the best play of a ccg I have ever seen. If they can keep it available and affordable, it will claim the throne if Magic abdicates it.
    Pokémon I have never been into, so I am assuming that it will pretty much stay what it is since it’s been so consistent for a few decades.
    Flesh and blood is a great pro game and will stick around but it will stay niche.
    If I’m an investor, I’d look at flesh and blood. And if I am a player I’d buy into Star Wars unlimited.
