    I can't describe how glad I am that this is the way how recording sessions go for other fellow youtube pianists as well. At times I seriously tend to punch myself right in the face for mistakes that happen over and over again ;) Or even worse - beat up the piano keys for being rude just like you do ;) Now my keys have become somewhat clanky and the call for the piano service technician is just a stone's throw away...

    • @Roodneyfb

      Oh, it's so very good to know I'm not alone on this. I'm not a youtuber, but I do play piano, so I know what you mean, haha.

      Happens to me too. Probably why I don't record my playing very often! I can nail it when I do a dry run before recording. Turn the camera on and suddenly I can't play (or remember) the music!

    It's the worst feeling ever when you play a song perfectly but then fuck up on the very last chord.

    • @orngng
      @orngng 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jacob for the people who don't know what a chord is, a chord is 2 or more notes played at the same time
      e.g , a chord can be C, E and G

      Ok fair enough but if people are watching videos of a genre that was specifically made for piano, then I would like to assume that they know what a chord is. But maybe some don't, my apologies.

    As a viewer, it's eye-opening to see that it doesn't just always flow perfectly off of your fingers and onto the recording every time. Because that's how it seems when all I see is the finished, perfect recording. Though I wonder what happens in live performance venues. I've never been to a concert where the conductor suddenly shouted, "Arrrgh! We forgot a section!"

    This is what I love to see. It was Scott Joplins eccentric genius played by a truly talented pianist that brought me here, but these real world outtakes that make it ..... human. That and the 'ow' at the end of Maple Leaf Rag - yet the key playing mid performance usually looks so precise.

    I don't know you and this is the first time I've responded to your video. I can relate to SO MANY of the frustrations you went throught as I also dealt with practicing through my music lessons. During the times I would practice, I went through the "grrr" moments, suddenly standing up and walking around the room, digging my fingers into my hair and wanting to scratch into my scalp, or just lifting up the piano and violently kicking it as hard as I can. However, I restrained. I sought perfection and it was just the way it was. Thanks for sharing.

    Kristen, many years ago scientists were trying to isolate a compound. They were tired and tried. They decided to put this experiment away for the night and come back tomorrow. They succeeded the next day.
    I used to be able to play the Entertainer, Solace and the Pineapple Rag. (No more piano) Some days it's just a good idea to let it go until tomorrow.
    In my younger days, I was trying to learn Rage Over A Lost Penny. I just couldn't get it. One morning, it fell into place.
    Keep up the good work.

    I can relate, Kristen. Only two times have I recorded myself playing piano (audio tape only). The first time was back in the 1980s as part of a writing workshop class. Instead of writing about a song we heard, I wrote about a song as I was playing it (Gladiolus Rag, my favorite). Even playing it simplified at the time, it was a challenge to get through the whole thing without error. Took several tries.The next time was in the 1990s when I recorded a medley of my favorite parts of rags for my grandfather including some homemade transition measures to go between the pieces. Took lots of tries to get that one down.And I had some battles with my roommate's cat back in the 1980s when I would practice. He sometimes got tangled up with my feet which messed up the foot pedal work. Or he got his claws stuck in something and began howling, forcing me to stop to rescue him. Fun times.

    I know the feeling that Kristen gets. I dabble a bit in music myself and I do sometimes record my playing. There is always more pressure to get a song perfect when you record it. You can play it many times without recording and get it right, but the moment you want to record, then you mess it up. But through repetition you eventually get a good recording, but it always takes time.

    Tape the music to the wall. Use the kind of tape that 3M makes, like post-it note sticky, so that it doesn’t hurt the music OR the wall. Put it just out of the camera frame. Then when you’re not sure where you’re going, look up at the music. The people will think you are accessing your spiritual self, but you’ll actually be accessing the notes. Rubinstein recorded with the music; his boy, John, turned pages for him. That also led to some interesting recording faux-pas, but he got it done. Imagine those performers who could walk into a studio and nail it, first take. Arthur was actually one of those, but not always.
    Another option is to get recording and video software that enables you to splice. Yeah, that feels dishonest, but you can see why people do it. Saves a lot of time and gives the same result. Glenn Gould was notorious in the studio. He’d do one movement in a single day in the studio, maybe dozens of takes. That was back when every edit required actually cutting the tape! He’d sometimes have dozens of edits in a single movement. His poor engineers worked for their money! You can find a lot of videos of Glen Gould doing this, because he had the prescience to realize that films of his progress and life would be valuable someday. And he was very, very right. Look for them on TH-cam! Then there’s Max Morath, who I heard perform “Living a Ragtime Life” (his off-broadway show) at least half a dozen times, and he never missed a note. NEVER! Max was the Chopin of ragtime. His pedaling in “Solace” made it as beautiful as any Mazurka or Nocturne that Chopin ever wrote. The thing is, Kristen, you DO it. You finish and the results are great. That’s the mark of an artist. Stay with it. You only get better, and you’re already really, really good!

    • @shooshieroberts3913
      @shooshieroberts3913 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more thing: if you use video software, cuts are done by changing camera angles. That makes it look like you purposely transitioned to another view. The extreme of that sometimes showed the artist on a different day. The light is different, and once I saw a video in which the PIANO was different in one cut. Try not to do that! But truly, the way that makes you feel the best is to nail it straight through. I just want you to know that it’s pretty common to splice. I always did two takes and took the best phrases from each take. Usually I didn’t have to cut at all. But the other take is still there for safety. Nothing like getting home and finding that you blew a note you weren’t aware of. Without a safety take, that’s when the “other piano” splice happens. (Don’t do that!)

She is a terrific mechanic though; and I must add that I can really relate to THIS video! The frustration! The maddening shriek when she blows it in the final measure! I DO RELATE to that 100%! Camera on. Camera off! On again. Off again! Yeah, it's enough to make you stab the piano with a machete'! But it's worth it eventually when you just flat nail it! And she DOES -- sometimes.

    Enjoyed the out-takes and all of your studio distractions. Amazing how many things just seem to happen when you are trying to make it perfect. +Roland Schlösser Hahaha.. I'm glad I could entertain! I do this every time I record.. I'm always talking to myself, and I usually just watch it and laugh at myself. I figured I could share it with my subscribers.. Since I don't have much on my channel other than actual recordings. :P

      If we didn't see the bloopers, we might think you were perfect or something...which you are BTW!

    I'm legit learning the Pineapple Rag (that's what you were trying to record, right?) at the moment and the "I skipped a section" part is soo relatable. You rock Kristen lol

    You play very well, and it's refreshing to see a video of 'mistakes', and to see how hard you work to get it perfect. Keep on playing, and enjoy your human-ness of imperfections :-)
