      I agree, it sounds better on this piano than it does a baby grand piano. Due to the style, rhythm, also time that it was written. That's most likely a 1912 piano. They have that saloon sound even after they are tuned.

    So I am 81 years old and have Scott Joplin on piano rolls. Gone to the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, been to New Orleans, knew the founder of the Preservation Hall (that's the new one - there was an old one) and heard quite a few ragtime piano players. This girl is among the best! We should all thank her parents for bringing forth this amazing talent. And I have heard her do other things so this is not some fly-by-night review. She is blessed. Maybe a little young for the world, but she will be. She will be.

    Honestly, I like the speed as played in the video. To all those people saying "it's too fast", I think it's kind of boring when played much slower than this. When Joplin said 'not fast' on the sheet music, it was pointed towards the people that would play it at ridiculously fast speeds just to show off.

    • @thm9918
      @thm9918 7 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      i think he actually meant not fast.. not just to direct it towards pretentious people..

    • @nicorhodes5310
      @nicorhodes5310 7 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      In retrospect the style at the time was to play pieces like this at absurdly fast tempos. Joplin's indication of not fast was matched with the occasional m.m. which varied between 84 - 100 at the quarter. That works about to about how fast it's being played here. Perhaps a bit slower. And each rag suggests a slightly different tempo. You just have to pay attention to the amount of inner voicing, etc. It's all there. This is bright, but not too fast.

    • @mantictac
      @mantictac 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The tempo that this interpretation is nearly exactly the same as the original tempo marking.

    • @JoEbY-X
      @JoEbY-X 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Pineapple Rag is marked 100 beats per minute for the quarter note, in 2/4 time, "Slow March tempo". To see that this is correct, try marching, stomping your feet up high, pumping your arms, one step per beat, at 100 BPM, and you'll see you're doing a slow march. And yes, Joplin's direction not to play his music too fast wasn't about pretentious people, it was because other styles of jazz at the time were played with much faster tempos and he thought of his ragtime as more sophisticated.

    • @sunnysideupp1797

    Ragtime should sound sassy. It's not meant to be played like a dirge. I think the tempo of this play er is just right.

    • @rhalleballe
      @rhalleballe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      >It's not meant to be played like a dirge.
      Really? Even not, when its title is "Solace"? Rather weird.

    • @elektra9474
      @elektra9474 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rhalleballe Solace can be of a lively type. Some take solace in booze, drugs, sex, dancing etc. It doesn't have to be slow and reflective. Maybe this is what the composer was thinking of. After all, ragtime music was played in places where people congregated to have fun.

    • @rhalleballe
      @rhalleballe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elektra9474 Obviously, you dont know "Solace". Its the sadest and slowest Rag i have ever seen and heard and playing it "sassy" is the worst misunderstanding you can make. Rather than guessing around in what wrong way to interpret ragtimes, you might want to go to the trouble of listening to the many beautiful slow interpretations of ragtimes.
      As an example here is the Brown Derby Rag No. 2 by Joseph F. Lamb. You should also listen to the foreword of the pianist very carefully. th-cam.com/video/7tfOtvmielo/w-d-xo.html
      Finally, here a wonderful version of "Solace" (even if he does not repeat the parts, what he should): th-cam.com/video/OKNHp-daefk/w-d-xo.html
      Maybe these pieces can open your mind a little.

    • @elektra9474
      @elektra9474 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rhalleballe I had already listened to Philip Dyson's version before I made my original comment. So I don't need my mind opening. You clearly lack experience and understanding if you think that just because a piece is called 'Solace', it must be played at a slow pace. There are plenty of examples in music of sad emotions being expressed in ways that you are obviously not aware of. Examples are Sippi Wallace singing 'Women be Wise' which is sung with a degree of wry humour even though the underlying message is sad. And Mahler's music had a habit of expressing deeply sad emotions with violence and fury. A good example is his Lieder eine fahrenden Gesellen, in particular the 3rd song in the cycle ' Ich hab' ein gluehend Messer.'

      @@elektra9474 > "You clearly lack experience and understanding if you think that just because a piece is called 'Solace', it must be played at a slow pace. "
      No, you dont understand it. It must be played at a slow pace NOT because of its title (thats only a "hint"), it has to played slowly, as playing it "sassy" is simply WRONG. You believe, that every Ragtime has to be played "sassy", because its a Ragtime. Thats extremely poor understanding of Ragtime. Thats what i mean. "Solace" is only one example of many.
      To remember: "Ragtime should sound sassy. It's not meant to be played like a dirge."
      Thats simply stupid. Sorry about that, but it is stupid. You dont know Ragtime.
