If you like your horror films bleak and hopeless and dark, thats awesome! If you like your horror movies to be lighter, action oriented, whatever, thats also awesome! Horror should be accessible, with something for everyone in every flavor, and we should be excited when movies register with others, even if we prefer different versions or different types of horror. Horror is for everyone and the more people get into it, the more horror we can get.

Yes, but if you make a movie like this, starting from the concept of the original one and fucdup all the depth with the happy ending, than I M extremely disappointed. Your arguments is extremely valid and right, but not for this kind of movie. They literally joked with my expectation, everyone laughs and clapped inside the theater except me and few others, that watched the movie like me and hope to see people struggling with the raw reality from Tafdrup movie. I was thinking get the helllll out of there. Those rocks were unbelievable and cruel. I was thinking too they prey on families with one child so that they can "swap" kids after getting rid of the parents and "tongue" to prevent child from speaking. The stoning was Uber depressing and sinister yet also impressive due to special effects. I prefer endings where the victims survive and fight back so that ending was shocking. I disagree about the bunny rabbit. In the original (spoilers) the dad was praised and called a hero for going back for the bunny rabbit. It stroked his ego, and it’s implied that he doesn’t get to feel like that a lot. So him going back for the bunny wasn’t really for the daughter, it was for himself. Where’s in the remake, he doesn’t even find the bunny in the beginning. AND he wants his daughter to get rid of the bunny anyways so why would he care if they left it?
HOWEVER the remake did do something interesting. When Agnes is crying for her bunny she says they’re going to hurt him like they hurt Ant. And then at the end when they’re trying to leave for the second time, he sees them hurt Ant and he immediately jumps out of the car and goes back. Kinda cool, idk

The movie surpasses the original due to execution. I almost skipped it due to its trailer that gave too much away and was overplayed. While there weren’t surprises, the acting was outstanding and tension kept me engaged. It’s definitely worth a watch!

Yeah foreign horror films are known for pushing boundaries, showing violence, shocking, disturbing, and bleak depressing endings. I assumed they'd have to do the third act differently in the remake. You can appreciate the experience of both films for different reasons. I think original had cultural messaging of how political correctedness, people pleasing, ignoring instincts, and being overly polite.

I have seen the original but the way you described the film and its meaning actually reminded me of a very weird experience I had on vacation a couple years ago. Long story short we were in a 3rd world country doing a small group tour and the tour stopped taking us to the pre designated locations. There were many excuses for this but it got weirder and weirder. My husband and I were immediately suspicious but no one else on the tour was. Those people were all solo travelers and we were shocked they were so naive to not be bothered by being driven into the middle of nowhere at night in a dangerous country. We eventually demanded the guide let us out of the car. I feel like the other tourists were tricked because the guide seemed to be nice and friendly and positive. It might have ended fine but we weren't about to find out the opposite direction

    • @anitaknight3915

I was just thinking I wonder if this happens more than we'd like to think because people are more at risk being easily trusting in foreign countries with their defenses down while on vacation. It'd be easier to take ppl and make them go missing in a foreign country. That's insane to stay with strangers you just met on vacation like in the original.

RE the Orig. movie, I feel much like you did, as tho it was very well done & acted, the Danish/Good husband was So passive it was Maddening, & most of the movie was so Disturbing, I found it entertaining but didn't "enjoy" it, & I was truly Upset by its last 20 mins & tragic, sad ending.😥 The only movie I've seen in a Theater in last few yrs was Barbie w/a good friend, but she doesn't like Horror, so I may have to force myself to go see the new Speak No Evil alone.🤞

Great Review Cody and good comparison. I haven't seen the original but I did look it up and I was still happy with the film because it was written and Directed by James Watkins who directed films like my little eye which is sort of like a exploitation Big Brother style horror film and he did the Daniel Radcliffe starring woman in black film and a little British horror film called Eden Lake All of these films have one thing in common which is that they have very upsetting and very screwed up endings and I suppose after thinking about it for a long time he probably just thought I don't want to make another film with a depressing ending, but nevertheless I felt like with his previous work, the ending to this version still had some teeth. If you're not sold on the approach to the way this film was handled, go to see the film for James M'acovys performance, lets just say I was getting some Eden Lake levels of discomfort watching some of the scenes in this film. I also like the fact when I was watching it there wasn't as much music in this version as their would be in a standard Blumhouse production, it probably felt more timeless then most of the films they have done recently.
If you want to see more films like this film but without the cleaned-up ending check out some of the other films from this director he's someone who deserves to keep making movies for how uncompromising he can be

I liked The original better. Original had better Pacing, structure, development of the characters. In the original they took their time with explaining plotpoints, but without losing the entire pacing. For mainstream moviegoers This ending might have been thrilling, but to me it was a little generic. Nothing that i haven’t seen before. McAvoy great as a psycho, that is no surprise cause we have seen that already in Split and Glass.

The remake's ending sparked mixed reactions, as it was a complete contrast to the original film's ending. The original film's director and writer, Christian Tafdrup, criticized the change, claiming that "I don’t know what it is about Americans, but they are brought up for a heroic tale, where the good must win over the bad, and this version of the film cultivates that.".....Enough said.
