Heat Wave In Our Shipping Container Home...

  • When the summer heat hit, it became clear that there were a few more projects that were necessary for our off-grid shipping container home to function for our family. Number one on the list was installing air conditioning - after a lot of research, Lou decided on a mini split (which will actually be helpful in the winter, too. Once the fire dies in the night, the mini split can be put on a timer so it could kick on and he won't have to tend to the fire through the night). The other project was getting a shower installed between our two shipping containers. This allows me to shower when Max is napping quickly and easily! Both systems are running so well and have massively improved the quality of our life this summer. So grateful to have Lou by my side, willing to do everything we need to feel comfortable in our tiny house!
    Big hugs,
    Dana

You seem to be getting more comfortable and settled in your shipping container home with each new video. I’m so happy for you!! Here in the wilderness of of the PNW (🇨🇦) along with the heat we have wildfires. It’s really stressful and really smokey. We have been told to stock up on food, water, fuel, medications, and to keep our pets inside and ready to go. We are on standby to have our power, internet, and phone service cut should the fires advance any closer to the main road. Here at home we have plenty of food, and our garden and greenhouse are in full swing so we are in good shape there. People in town have been hoarding gas… it is now sold out in all the local gas stations. There really is no escape route out of here because the local Forest Service Roads have not been used in decades. Such is the disadvantage of living in the wilderness. I am so thankful for the firefighting crews from my own country and also for the hundreds of wildfire fighters who have flown in from other countries to assist. The world is full of so many amazing people… one really notices this in stressful times. People helping people makes my heart sing!! As per ushe, I am chasing down some Sunday morning chores and will rewatch your video later today when it’s chill time… is there such a thing as chill time in this summer heat and 🔥?? Thanks for the update, and enjoy your air conditioning!! Ⓜary🇨🇦🌲

Oh my goodness Mary ❤ That really does sound so stressful!! Very glad to hear you have plenty of food and that the garden and greenhouse are in full swing. Thank you so much for taking the time to describe what you are experiencing--it is so scary, but important to know the human impact of what is going on. How beautiful with your reminder of gratitude for all the brave firefighters coming together to battle this. Wishing you and all the folks in your area that this tides over OK. Stay safe, Mary ❤sending our love to you up north!

Hi Dana, Ooh I know those feelings so well. We live in a 7m x 2.4x tiny house and when our little one came along there were so many adjustments we needed to make to make it comfortable as parents. Most of these adjustments were on my partner Tom to change and I felt SO many feelings for voicing what we needed. Parenting is hard enough and asking for a more consistent temperature, some more space, a fridge that works properly etc just make SUCH a difference. It does get better and I think the papa bears just want us all to be comfortable.... much of the parenting is on the mama for at least the first couple of years, so learning to voice what we need to make it more manageable is such a must! Good job team!!!

I have a wonderful outdoor shower that can be used year round in my 4 season eastern Washington state climate. It is critical to use heat tape and insulate all exposed pipes (pool noodles work great) and to drain down all water in the shower line and remove the shower head after use in below freezing weather. I adore my outdoor shower!!! It's a very refreshing cool water rinse when working outside in hot weather also. I bought a special low water pressure shower head. That thing is powerful!
In the changing climate, heat domes are the new norm unfortunately. AC is critical in most of the USA now. Central AC is an expensive and wasteful luxury. Portable AC units or small units like you have installed are all that's necessary.

Cheering from CT that AC works and having the heat on a timer in the winter is a true game changer!!! This has been such a crazy summer; definitely, view AC is more critical now. What awesome progress you guys are making! Great idea with the mini split, people are even putting them in vans instead of 12v ACs due to how energy efficient they are. And anyone questioning why you need AC in the summer for a small child might not have experienced summer in much of the states. And you’ll definitely be able to run it off of solar sustainably eventually. Crate is looking a little small, Freya might need to size up to be more comfortable as you go. Thanks for the videos I love watching!

Also, don't be embarrassed about having modern luxuries, which are absolutely doable off grid! Remember your yachty days where all was possible! You have come sooo far...well done! 🎉

I always like to see how the shipping containers are evolving into a usefull living space. I saw the airco unit being installed and wanted to share an idea on using no energy, with the same endresult. The concept of cooling air trough the ground, where temperatures are more stable. They call these houses using free energy 'earthships'.

Trying to understand the goal here. Financially what is the cost of this build vs small house 1000 sq feet or so and a separate office building? Know shipping container homes are a big you tube thing right now, but if the goal is to live off grid I think for the money there is a more sustainable way. Will be interested to see what the finished product is and the final cost.

If one has rust in the water, a manual softener will remove the iron very well. and manual water softeners are very low requirement of salt. Like i used one bag of salt every month I think and that is really very cheap. I didnt need any other filters besides that, because the water itself was nice and soft, and as it works you could not use a automatic softener with a ratio of rust and soft water to require the results you need.

@@WildWeRoamthe shipping containers don’t lose value, so you are not wasting any time or money there. We sold 3 after using for more than we paid and didn’t do any improvements like you did. Also if you end up building your permanent house where the wall tent is currently (I think I remember you placed it there due to the ideal location on your property), you can use the shipping containers as guest quarters. And the wall tent could always be sold or used as an event space etc for parties on the property.
