Had he been camped in the kings capital all the dukes would have been highlighted as well as the counts directly under the king. You can see at 1:00 that Tunis is under that kingdom and again at 18:41 even though the map is grayed that the border still shows.
I think realistically/personally I'd aim for a mid-sized feudal realm and after converting the ruler and a lot of the provinces, I'd maybe stick around as a religious figure/wiseman or change my type of adventuring band to either roleplay as zealous mercenaries/holy order to defend the righteous realm (like England against the inevitable crusade) and eventually aim to get landed as a small noble or maybe take over the kingdom if the ruler abandons the faith.

Try doing a game where you try to survive the hardest settings, Doomsday plagues, Basically immortal conquers, Infinite black deaths and allow random starts for the black plague, so it can arrive in 867. and random death events turned on.
Once I got the DLC I was actually thinking of doing a Landless Hellenic run with the goal of restoring the old roman empire, so this will work as a good guideline for the religious side.
Haven't looked in the files to confirm, but I think the Ascension decision also requires the province to already be of the correct faith despite it not saying that anywhere in the decision. That's how it worked on my playthrough anyway
As long as you get a 'majority' or more specifically the most powerful vassals in a kingdom to convert the ruler can't REALLY do anything. I've literally watched a civil war break out in france over some stupid religion I just made up and the Catholics which was so bloody for both sides that it took decades for the kingdoms to recover. It gets even worse if you stick around and start converting NPCs who've only come to the war from far away because it's a holy war or an ally via civil war. Had some mongol dude come to france, converted him, and 30 years later most of his small kingdom was my religion. Only saw the dude twice.
To be honest, I feel like he should have just focused on one place. For example, if he had gone to France or Iberia and focused all his efforts on converting provinces, he could have had a much more real impact. With a direct approach and playing optimally, he could have converted 2 or 3 large kingdoms and with that, fun things could have happened.
@@segiraldovi You have to stay in a specific area. Not converting kings allows the king to FORCE their vassal to reconvert back, or face war. Making sure to stay in a local area. France/Germany for example, allows you to maximize your effectiveness.

One of the holy sites was in the Maghreb and after converting the whole Maghreb I was able to stage a coup d'état in the kingdom where the holy site was and became head of the faith. I'm sure Laith could do something more elaborate.
My guess would be that Tunis was supposed be Hellenic before you could take the decision. Like you were supposed to convert the top liege and then he uses his Court Chaplin to Convert County, and THEN you could take the decision. Admittedly this is just speculation on my part though.
You really should be settling those Boundary Disputes. Worst case scenario, you can eat some stress to just succeed by default. But typically, there's a way to solve them that doesn't require Stewardship.

top liege means the person who is not a vassal at the top. Tunis was a vassal so they were not a top liege.
